[VIDEO] North Harbour Rays vs Brisbane City: 2014 NRC highlights, scores, blog

By Phil Bird / Roar Guru

The North Harbour Rays take on Brisbane City in Round 8 of the National Rugby Championship. Join The Roar from 7.35pm (AEDT) for live scores and coverage.

This competition has a habit of delivering exciting footy. Some blistering attack, combined with occasionally ordinary defence, has resulted in some pretty large scores.

The scores would be larger if the coaches put more emphasis on kicking.

To date the excessively generous three points on offer for a successful conversion have generally been shunned in preference for slices, hooks and stabs.

Indeed the shots for goal have been ordinary; although it must be said the fans aren’t baying for kickers these days.

Many will flock to Brookvale Oval tonight to see Quade Cooper. And why not?

Having Quade back in the mix is pure tonic. He stayed largely in second gear against the Greater Sydney Rams last week and will be looking to shift up a couple tonight.

Watch out for Nick Frisby and Chris Kuridrani also.

Both teams are within reach of the top of the NRC table; City is 5th and the Rays 7th on the ladder.

A win to the latter and they could make it to third place. It’s a tight run.

If recent history is anything to go by, we can expect something between a netball and an AFL score.

Join us at 7.35pm tonight on The Roar, the place to be for live scores and where you can have your say on the go.

The same thought occurred to me, as I was writing that part. Then formed an different opinion, due to other facets of NRC gameplay

"Its becoming the anti-thesis of Jakeball. Ball always in play, always in hand." That's the anti-thesis of rugby.

Smallest crowd at Brookvale this season, I reckon approximately 1,700. Which means the average is about 2,200 for Brookvale

Rays took one to score a draw two weeks ago, Mogg missed one to defeat the Rays last week but missed

This game is intriguing to analyse, though it follows the NRC pattern. Its becoming the anti-thesis of Jakeball. Ball always in play, always in hand. Set piece when it happens, is pretty good though. Game runs @ 100mph w/cadiovascular overload - structured defence becomes a casualty. Everyone is tired especially around 50'. A single quick turnover and counter attack leads to eight points. Which is, how City pulled away in the 2nd half. Rays: - Lineout good. Scrum not as - Took on the City pace and power, but unable to keep up - Defenses were opened up by both backs and pack - Hooker Holmes and Captain lock Peterson good performances again - Various linebreakers in 2nd half did good. Just needed to maintain possession. City: - Redeemed themselves, playing tough and fast. - Those big burly replacement front rowers are v handy with ball in hand as well as scrum - Scrambling defence and rucking saved their game and scored points in the 2nd half - in a single stroke - As the Rays opened up. Cooper did the job. Kerevi as usual deadly, defences opened or not - Gunn, McDuling, Ready also stand outs
