Di Patston quits the ARU, who will be next?

By The Roar / Editor

Wallabies team business manager Di Patston has quit her role at the Australian Rugby Union today.

Patston has been at the centre of the controversy surrounding a mid-air altercation with Wallaby Kurtley Beale, as well as a subsequent revelation of obscene text messages being distributed by Beale.

There has been increasing speculation regarding the nature of the relationship between Wallabies coach, Ewen McKenzie and Patston.

On Friday, McKenzie denied a relationship, stating:

“I’ve got a professional relationship with her. And I refute [suggestions of an intimate relationship]. There are people out there and that there’s some sort of campaign to impugn that’s [not] the situation”.

“I don’t employ off LinkedIn. She has a very strong background. She is HR trained. She is a resource.

“I don’t believe her appointment has caused angst.

“I don’t make any apologies for trying to assemble people around me to get the job done.

“I don’t think I have a divided camp.”

Ms Patston was on indefinite stress leave before her resignation due to the incidents in Wallabies camp in the past weeks.

Georgina Robinson of the Sydney Morning Herald has reported a growing discontent among Wallabies players around Ms Patston’s role in the team.

McKenzie strongly denied any sense she was unqualified for the position.

Georgina Robinson has also reported Ewen McKenzie may have known about the alleged texts concerning Di Patston ‘months ago.’

Isaac Moses, Beale’s manager, told Robinson that McKenzie had a conversation about the text messages ‘addressing them,’ in June. This is at the time of the incidents.

When told what Moses has alleged, McKenzie, through an ARU spokesman, said he stood by his statement on Friday.

Whether this is the first of several to depart Australian Rugby Union will be played out in the coming days, with Beale’s code of conduct tribunal expected to sit early next week.

Kelvin Height's Golf course. Interestingly the Pro at Paradise Palms just North of Cairns was the Pro at Kelvin Heights some years ago. The backdrop of The Remarkables makes this one of the most scenic courses anywhere in the world. I was allowed to take my golf clubs on my honeymoon and this was one of the courses that I played and my new bride caddied.. I hope the fish are biting.

I've seen & and experienced worse behaviour in the corporate world. There are many ways to deal with this matter. Maybe KB needs counselling and workplace training. Bad corporate culture arises naturally from human nature, lack of management savvy, and bad or clueless management behaviour. I don't condone the text messages, but I equally don't condone the behaviour of Di and Ewe. Putting themselves before the team is not acceptable. No party should be talking to the press especially as this matter is before a tribunal. A persons career hangs in the balance. Today's news articles paint a very troubling picture of life at Camp Wallabie - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2789957/i-t-stop-crying-humiliated-emotional-text-exchange-female-wallabies-staffer-kurtley-beale-accidentally-sent-crude-message.html

Eales will compromise his position if he offers opinions in a public manner. I would expect clichés understandably.

Moore is the actual captain anyway, Hooper is just filling in. Hodgson is a bizarre option as a captain given that he hasn't started for the Wallabies and may lose his spot in the squad as soon as Pocock is fit. His age suggests he won't be captain for long so the leadership questions will resurface.

Phil Thomson is a former Australian Federal Police cop and has been on the Brumbies and Wallabies staff as manager is in charge of the integrity unit. You would think he will be thorough in this if the likelihood that jobs are on the line.

Mate if you sent the kind of message and picture Beale did to a co-worker in any male blue collar workplace in the real world, you'd be told to stop bloody mucking about and get on with the friggin' job.

You'd be pretty happy if someone sent that kind of stuff to your wife, girlfriend or sister mate? Sure they'd be stoked to receive it.

Mate if you sent the kind of message and picture Beale did to a co-worker in "corporate organisation" you'd be out on your ear so fast you wouldn't have a chance to clear your desk.

The text messages are puerile. I don't think KB is all bad. Everyone makes mistakes and deserves a second or sometimes a third chance. Did Beale send the texts which were strangely resurrected post the argument on the plane because he is increasingly frustrated at how he has been treated by management? I don't condone the messages but whether people like it or not there are always two sides to the story. Those in the Wallaby camp know exactly what has transpired. KB wants to play rugby and he probably needs some off the field guidance. The Waratah's coach was able to manage KB so what is going on at Camp Wallaby? The rumour mill is rife with all manner of theories. One is that Di Patston controlled everything and everyone. If a player wanted to speak with Ewen they had to do it via Di. Why? Whilst everyone is blaming and shaming KB please think about his emotional wellbeing. Di Patston is not innocent here either. Don't make this a gender issues because it is not. If she is qualified as she claimed to be as a cognitive behavioural therapist then surely she would have been able to contain the disagreement on the plane. She did after all tell KB his career is over. I think she might be equally responsible for bullying & harassment. If that is the argument being proffered by many on this site. The ARU would be foolish to use this situation to make a statement to players. In a Corporate organisation a person would be given three formal warnings before being dismissed. I think we all need to remember KB might be an awesome rugby player but he might not have a strong foundation behind him which is something the ARU should be looking at resolving.

IMO the situation has two different issues to be delt with. First, the sexual harassment or discrimination by sex. Second, the conduct of a player attempting to mine the authority of a member of the organization by exposing him/her to the his peers. The first issue can be dealt with some type of therapy and education and involves not only the team but society as a whole. The second one affects directly to ARU and it will determine the way the authorities will deal with this type of issues in the future. Some type of message must be sent to players that will grant staff members the respect they need to perform their duties, otherwise anarchy will rule and for sure the Wallabies do not need that going foward.

So a journalist has reported that Moses told her that Belae spoke to Link about " the text messages..." and the issue was addressed. Was the alleged offensive text directly mentioned? I find it hard to believe that ANY organisation would find the alleged text acceptable, and cannot believe that Link would ignore it once he knew of its content. If the alleged text message does exist, then it IS a sackable offence and Beale has had previous 'strikes'. For the captain to suggest otherwise defies common sense. How is the treatment of women to be viewed in rugby circles if the alleged text exists, and the ARU does nothing about it? Personal lives should be just that...personal. Only if that affects ones professional performance should it matter.

Yep, it's a toxic mess and appears to have been for some time. Get rid of the potential stars who do nothing but cause trouble. There have been too many over the past few years. The Wallabies need a no dickheads policy.

Well said. The thing I hate about the internet is it gives everyone a chance to publish ill-judged, premature and prejudicial remarks about matters in which none of us are privy to the full details.
