Franjic loss outweighs Berisha's departure

By Tony H / Roar Pro

Having watched Brisbane Roar’s opening game of the A-League, I can’t help but think that in the midst of fanfare surrounding Besart Berisha’s departure to Melbourne, a potentially more vital cog left quietly but may be significantly harder to replace.

Over the last few seasons, it has been a common sight to see Ivan Franjic bombing on down the right in a gut-busting overlap which gives Brisbane the extra numbers to create goal-scoring opportunities. Watching Sunday’s game, I think it’s safe to say that James Donachie doesn’t offer the same option.

WATCH THE LATEST A-LEAGUE HIGHLIGHTS

I know he was playing out of position, but aside from the obvious own goal, Donachie’s play was clearly lacking in not just polish, but endeavour and intent. During every attacking phase in the second half, Donachie was a good 30 to 40 metres away from the pointy end of the pitch. On several occasions his overlapping runs were a good seven to eight seconds late and aimless when they arrived.

His defending was also woeful, with several key crosses being delivered into the the box without any real difficulty by his opposition number. Have a look at the replay of Bruce Djite hitting the crossbar and judge the effort for yourself. The full-back must stop the cross getting in and this simply wasn’t happening.

The most important factor for me was his positioning in the shape of the team, and thus Adelaide’s freedom in midfield and ease of defending. The right-hand side of the park collapsed far too often as Donachie came in too far, stayed too deep and moved too late.

A key indicator of the Roar’s season will be the performance of their fullbacks. With Shane Stefanutto getting on, we must have him as the second option to overlap, not demand that he is the more damaging of the two fullbacks.

It will be interesting to see if Mike Mulvey keeps Donachie there next week or moves someone like Jack Hingert into the starting spot.

Hingert gives the ball away more. Franjic is very safe on the ball and his movement in that positional exchange with Miller and Petratos is much better (difficult to measure with stats).

I'm not blaming him either. If anything, Mulvey (for picking Donachie out of position) and McKay (for not controlling his temper) are to blame.

If you take a look at the the player stats for Franjic and Hingert - you will actually find (and I was just as surprised by this as you may be) that Hingert scores better in pretty much every facit of play as a right wing-back. I can only assume he was injured to have not started in this 1st game. I rate Donachie, but not over Hingert in that RB position.

Towser it wasn't supposed to be a Franjic comparison, it was a comparison of where we are hurt more by our big name departures. I think that Kurtishi shows real promise but won't flourish without supply. I personally feel that we've had so much impetus from our fullbacks over the last few years that with Franjic going and Stefanutto getting older, this could be a come down for us if we don't cover it. I'm sure Mike Mulvey knows this a lot better than I do.

@Cameron If you have a look at the Grand Final team sheet, Franjic is listed at right back. Yes he constantly overlapped past the three central midfielders acting as a wing-back, which is functionally the point of the article. I think that's what we are missing. @Magnificent11, I couldn't agree more than Donachie's conservatism is because he's playing out of position. I rate him highly as a centre-half, I just think he was caught out a few too many times not being an instinctive full-back. I'm certainly not blaming him for the result, it was a team effort that the Roar won't be proud of.

I thought Donachie was more ineffective than Kurtishi. Kurtishi's lack of input stemmed from Brisbane inability to transition the ball through midfield into attacking areas. I think Adelaide deserve credit for this. Brattan was man-marked by Djite when he came deep so he pushed on a bit to allow McKay and Miller to drop off to receive the ball. To Adelaide's credit they were very tight on these two and thus Brisbane struggled to play through midfield (until the second goal was scored and Adelaide didn't press as hard in midfield). I thought Donachie was too conservative. There we several times will Petratos came inside and and was looking to Miller or Donachie to get around him only to find the space vacant. In general, the right side, excluding Petratos, was very poor. Overall, I think Donachie's conservatism is down to the fact that he's not a natural right-back. I hope Hingert or Bowles get to start there for the next game. Miller will probably keep his place because of McKay's suspension (I don't think Mulvey will go with both Lustica and Sarota). As for who's a bigger loss. I think Kurtishi will eventually prove his worth. He won't score as many goals as Berisha but I think he'll be more involved in build up. There were times in the first half where he played some nice balls in behind the Adelaide defense (Berisha would have dribbled). I can't see anyone providing the thrust down the right the Franjic provided. So for me, Franjic is the bigger loss.

Agree,Miller for me is lazy, doesn't really sit well with what I expect as a Roar fan. Wouldn't 't be so bad if he made up for it with exquisite dribbling or passing talent. Even his namesake Charlie, although so laid back he was horizontal most of the match, had more creativity in his little toe.

Yes man of the match, the ref, none other than the usual suspect at Roar matches over the years However blaming one player or two, or lack of both is ludicrous ,particularly against Adelaide, with Roar's poor record against them at home. Its one of those records that's hard to put your finger on as to why,but the last part of the second half with the Roar trying to even up the score after the own goal was déjàvu for me. Doñachie is no Franjic agreed & maybe Hingert is a better option, although overlapping fullbacks like Franjic don't grow on trees. Have seen Donachie though have more solid performances than yesterday so let's lay off the Franjic comparison's until further into the season,it's only one match. Also was impressed with Kurtishi 's touches. The lad struggled at times with his options, but as indicated he's been here 5 minutes. He won't be Berisha, but if Mike can make the most of his different talents from Berisha, he could be valuable. Roar had their chances despite 10 men & although I understand Matt's frustration with Ben Williams, he's too experienced a player to be sent off for dissent.

Cameron -Tony's comment was aimed at the performance of one player in yesterday's overall team effort and in my opinion he is 100% correct in his observation. The tragedy is that due to injuries last season, there were many examples of the contribution Franjic made to that overall team effort being missed and the usual replacement,Hingert was to prove an adequate but limited "stand-in" and as I have said before Roar are now in a position where they should not be "trialling" players in vital positions. Kurtishi surprised me somewhat. He actually has better ball skills than Berisha and on more than a few occasions showed promising link - up with Broich but after one game I think a wait and see stance should be taken. There were other problem areas in yesterday's game and neither Tony nor you touched on them, but that doesn't make them go away. The fact that the right winger was left almost totally isolated is not only Donnachie's fault, and the lack of men getting into the box throws up another set of problems for the coaching team but it is early days and of course both teams won't run into a whistle happy official every week helping to break up move after move with over dependence on his whistle to control the game. jb

Agree, if anything, Miller should've been the player being picked out for not helping out in attack. Dimi needed some support from him which was not forthcoming.

I believe Berisha is the bigger loss after watching yesterday. Kurtishi seems to apprehensive to back himself and he can't seem to time a decent run for a good ball. Broich had to do everything yesterday. Dimi Petratos gave it a right royal go. Of course he's no Franjic but in terms of who's position was most missed yesterday, I fail to see how was anyone but Besart up front. I also find it bizarre you mention Donachie regularly when Franjic, although originally a right back, he became a right winger for the roar. Each to their own I guess.
