Beale: I feared for my future

By News / Wire

Kurtley Beale has opened up about the “terrible lows” he endured amid fears he would never play for the Wallabies again.

Beale has been cleared to return from suspension after being fined $45,000 for sending an offensive photograph to then-ARU employee Di Patston in June.

It’s believed the ARU was set to terminate Beale’s contract but he escaped a harsher punishment after a second and more offensive text was discovered to have been sent by somebody else.

He was found not guilty of a more serious charge of misconduct and, despite new coach Michael Cheika opting not to send for the playmaker and have him on the European tour, Beale is mightily relieved that the whole ordeal is behind him.

“I have had some terrible lows in recent weeks, and been really down, but I feel I’m coming out of it now,” Beale told News Corp.

“It was a devastating time for me and I wondered if I would ever wear the Wallabies jersey again.

“But I just kept saying to myself the truth will win out in the end.”

While disappointed with the fine, Beale feels “vindicated because I never told anything but the truth”.

“That’s why I fought so hard to clear my name. I would have taken this as far as I had to prove to everyone that I have been honest throughout the entire process.

“I did the wrong thing with the only text message I sent. It was stupid and offensive but I was the first to look her in the eye and say I was genuinely really, really sorry.

“I always said I did not send the second one and the tribunal agreed it was not from my phone.

“I apologised to Di back in June, we hugged and cried over it and that’s why I was so surprised when it became a big issue again. She and I agreed the case was closed and Ewen McKenzie was made aware of it.”

A massive supporter of Beale, Cheika said it was important that his NSW Waratahs charge returns to the physical and mental state required to play Test rugby before rushing him back to the Wallabies fold.

“Now I want to concentrate on getting my fitness back and being part of the Wallabies campaign leading up to the World Cup,” Beale said.

“I miss playing with my best mates and can’t wait to play under Michael Cheika with the Australian team.”

I am really pleased that the Brums are going to try to keep him involved in their setup. Just to put the cat amongst the pigeons, why is it that so many Brumbies players seem to have more than one feather to their cap? Rathbone Palmer McCabe Who are the cognoscenti of the other teams (there must be some)? There, some positive rugby discussion.

Gary, setting aside the human and individual costs of this whole mess; this is not something the code should simply drop. As long as people look up to athletes (I wish we had the same level of fervor for say science or the arts) and use them as role models, their is a strong argument that each code needs to embody a sense of striving to be the best on and off the field. I'm not seeing that kind of strong leadership from the ARU and it is causing damage to everyone involved. Media is self serving and looking to stem the loss of readers and I can't really fault them for that, after all they want to make money also and the easy way is to create attention grabbing headlines. It has not been good for either Mr Beale or Ms Patston. Mr Pulver should have drawn a media curtain around the whole thing and advised that when the available evidence had been considered, then a full statement of the outcome would be made. People would be hounding him, but it is his job to prtoect the people involved on both sides as well as the code as a whole. Sport is not life, but as long as so many people give it so much attention, the off field matters are arguably always going to overshadow the on field stuff. As to those who keep saying that it has been proven that Di Patston this that and the other not qualified source of all evil and psychologist fake purple monkey dishwasher. That last sentence makes as much sense as your unfounded and unverified assertions. Di Patston's qualifications and interactions with the team are not the issue here. Anyone who had issues with her should have complained formally and with enough courage to set out their reasons. I do not hear anywhere that Kurtley or others made a constructive complaint anywhere and regardless of any pressure or dissatisfaction a person feels, trying to undermine another person by bad mouthing them behind their back is not going to achieve anything. The circumstances leading up to the event in question have no bearing on the yes/no proposition of was the text sent. I do feel sorry for Kurtley and the fear he must have experienced. But it is a rod he made for his own back.

People are quoting journalists who have access to information provided by different sources. Is the Courier Mail your bible Do you reject Wayne Smith? Are you against Rebecca Wilson? These people are commenting on a shameful episaode in Australian rugby and I'm not talking about Beale's text.

"the other scenario is that beale did send the text but the ARU could not prove it with their evidence, ie they couldnt prove he did send the tex." This is the exact impression the ARU has sought to give. This is the reason Pulver will follow McKenzie and Patston and resign Pulver backed McKenzie who was backing Patston. He sacked Edgerton and Quinn and although it's unclear that she formally assumed their roles, she certainly appeared to have similar power via her influence with McKenzie We have enough information to know that Patston is a loose cannon who convinced McKenzie she was a psychologist who could help him get the best out of the players. Her efforts caused disquiet in the team and can be assumed to be the reason for teamates supporting Beale despite his 'daft' behaviour Patston is the creator of the second email. Beale was denied natural justice. He was forced to attend a bizarre tribunal where the accuser and the main witness did not have to attend for cross examination. The ARU then GAVE PATSTON, no longer employed by the ARU, a copy of the seventy page document his defence team provided to the tribunal, in private. Why? This alone will bring in the Australian sports Commission. The board has gone meekly along with Pulver's plan to scapegoat Beale, but they have helped him torpedo Australian Rugby.

To turn to rugby for a change. Am I crazy or is KB a really poor defender, almost afraid to tackle(or take one)? I thought that the opposing teams should have run directly at him because a gap would just open up every time as other defenders are sucked in to cover for him. Am I too harsh? IOW is he really worth all the baggage he brings with him? Very high maintenance fellow.

You are being too kind here. Sending false texts is criminal especially if intent is to hurt.

He did take responsibility. He admitted he sent the text, apologised at the time.....then when it mysteriously was brought up again 4 months later he copped his punishment and apologised a second time. What else would you like?????

One of the biggest differences between Beale and Quade/JOC is that Beale has the backing of the players and coaches. Everyone that knows him talks about his good character, but one who makes stupid decisions. When JOC was about to be sacked....he didn't have a single person speak out saying he shouldn't be. When Quade said the toxic comments he also didn't have anyone in his corner and in fact had people like drew mitchell and sharpe firmly against him. Quade to his credit seems to have re-gained the respect of his peers, too early to tell with JOC (i doubt it). I chose to trust the judgment of people who know beale rather than the lynch mob looking for blood on the roar. When clearly classy people like RD vouch for his character it says a lot for me......but then again the same lynch mob did nothing but denigrate RD too.

Aussie as they come, and I am guessing your from the Beale apologist camp. No good Gazza burying your head in the sand and hoping it will all go away. Your lad Beale has stuffed up big time and I am not spruiking anything other than the most likely outcome from this sorry saga. DP will lawyer up as sure as the sun will rise in the beautiful state of QLD tomorrow morning. But, by all means enjoy the rugby but I think a number of the Wallatahs will have other things on their minds over the next few weeks.

the more I read about Kutley Beale the more I come to respect the short career of Pat McCabe's career, he may not have the fancy footwork of Beale, the acceleration, the speed and the ARU top up but damn he plays with guts, passion, pride and honor whenever he wears the Brumbies and the Wallabies colours.

Kurtley, grow up son!!!! You’re 25, you should now know what life’s about. Take responsibility for YOUR actions!! Forget the party.....just play football.....and even then others players might offer more than you?? Otherwise life’s going to continue kicking you in the “jatz crackers” and guess whose fault that will be??

ummm... the laptop incident was Quades first indiscretion and he was only around 20 years old at the time. Beale has had at least half a dozen misdemeanours on Wallaby/SR duty and is now 26 and stil hasn't learned his lesson. Are his suppirters as dim witted as he is? certainly seems that way...

It's not ok either way, you presume to read stuff into my comments that isn't there you are falling into the trap set for you by the media, who are driving this for their own motives. people on this site are quoting the Telegraph as source for this tripe, the telegraph ! who put Rugby at the far end of the sports pages, if you can find any ! I just said focus on the Rugby, if we all did this then they would get the message and drop the matter. How about strange stuff like - why can't we produce TH props or ball carrying locks. Why our backline passing is so poor, why they can't draw a man like the old days ? Why don't we set a 5 year time scale to be the dominant scrum in rugby ? The NRC had so many nay Sayers on this site yet it has unearthed loads of talent that will bring Wallaby teams up in the next 5-8 years . Too much melodrama and personal innuendo , what about the Rugby. That is all I was trying to say. Btw , name a major sport without a behavioural cloud hanging over it ?

Iwillnotstandby - if you could google search the (eventual) outcome of this matter, say with date range parameters around mid next year, you would find the following: 1. News articles lamenting the dismissive way the cruel and bullying text was treated by many in the media in mitigation of Beale. 2. A report of the eventual payout to DP, somewhere in the vicinity of 5 times her annual salary. 3. Articles about how Beale is going in Europe and debating whether he should be on standby for the world cup. 4. McKenzie's profile and bio up on pumarugby.com.ar The main articles I hope we don't read are ones about Di Patston taking her own life. It has been established, on the record, that she is being medicated, she has been contemplating suicide, yet still people choose to paint Beale as the victim and Patston as the perpetrator. I genuinely hope, to my core, that she can move past this issue and doesn't do anything drastic.

Given her history with the spider bite it seems very likely Patston will sue the ARU - I guess at that point anything remaining under wraps will be brought out in a court of law. Is ridiculous to me that the ARU aren't doing everything they can to quickly and openly deal with this. What a schemozzle. Bill is earning his Palaver nickname.
