[VIDEO] United States Formula One highlights: Austin Grand Prix coverage, blog, result

RACE RESULT:

Hamilton becomes only the seventh driver to win five consecutive race wins. His championship lead over Rosberg extends to 24 points now.

Ricciardo’s third place unfortunately means that he is now mathematically out of the championship now, however it is more than likely that he will finish the season in third.

Mercedes AMG have equalled the record set by McLaren in 1988 of leading 12 races from start to finish.

Hamilton has also become the leading British driver now in terms of race wins as he equalled Nigel Mansell’s previous record at the last race.

He also has tied Alonso in fifth on the all time winner’s list.

RACE PREVIEW:

After a short hiatus, the 2014 Formula One season enters its final phase with the third running of the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Join us on The Roar for all the action from 7:00am (AEDT).

While recent news has been dominated by speculation over Fernando Alonso’s future and the apparent failure of the Caterham and Marussia teams, there is still a drivers’ world championship being contested.

Lewis Hamilton is coming off another four-race winning streak, repeating this very feat from earlier in the season. The Briton’s lead in the championship has increased to 17 points over his Mercedes AMG teammate and rival Nico Rosberg.

Mercedes AMG will undoubtedly be the team to beat still, and with the constructors’ championship now clinched their key objective will be to allow their drivers to race without any hinderance.

Williams should be second fastest to the Silver Arrows, with this being the venue where Valtteri Bottas scored his first points as a rookie twelve months ago. The recently revived McLaren squad should also be on to score more points and perhaps threaten a podium place to extend their lead over Force India in the constructors’ championship.

Red Bull may finally have to give in to a penalty or two for going beyond the required five elements that make up their power-unit. Sebastian Vettel may miss qualifying altogether and start from the pit-lane with a race-friendly setup. Daniel Ricciardo could also be on cusp of using a sixth element for his Renault engine.

While the absence of Caterham and Marussia may not please everyone, Sauber could benefit. Having not scored a single point this season, the Swiss outfit sits eleventh in the constructors’ standings behind Marussia. A problem-free race for Esteban Gutierrez and Adrian Sutil could pay dividends for Sauber.

2012 winner Hamilton will be the driver to beat this weekend, but could three weeks off have helped Rosberg find a way to trump his teammate? Join us from 7:00am to find out.

Thanks Mark, great to have your company too this morning. Brazil has always given us big twists in the championship so perhaps in a week time we could see another dramatic shift occur. Nevertheless, Abu Dhabi will still be a treat to watch. Vergne has stepped it up ever since he found out Verstappen is in next year, hopefully he is retained but at the same time we'd like to see him move up on the grid.

Thanks for the liveblog this morning Jawad. Great drive by Lewis, almost impossible to argue with him as Champion for 2014 - but thanks to double points, we may still see the tables turned. Ricciardo incredible, Jeremy Clarkson just described him as the best driver in F1. Other highlights is the increasingly insane driving of Vergne and a return to form of sort for Lotus. Have a great day mate!

So the top ten then after the 56 laps of the United States Grand Prix is as follows: Hamilton, Rosberg, Ricciardo, Massa, Bottas, Alonso, Vettel, Magnussen, Vergne and Maldonado. Maldonado's tenth place stands as the five second penalty has already been applied to that.

Lap 56/56: Vettel moves into P8. There is still 2 seconds between Hamilton and Rosberg as the German is stuck behind Button and Grosjean.

Lap 55/56: Hamilton now demands blue flags to be shown to Grosjean, as this pack continues to battle for a place in the top ten. Steering issues for Grosjean too down in P12.

Lap 54/56: Button loses two places to Maldonado and then Vettel in the space of two corners. Maldonado is now in P9, but remember he has that five second penalty waiting for him at the end of the race.

Lap 53/56: Kvyat pitted as the team removed a piece of lodged carbon fibre with was supposedly hampering his performance. Vergne passes Button for P8. The Frenchman is also under investigation now by the stewards for forcing Grosjean off the track.

Lap 51/56: Vergne makes a big lunge on Grosjean going into Turn 1 and pretty much slaps his compatriot wide, taking away ninth place in the process. Grosjean as expected is unhappy.
