Hooper says Wallabies "excited" to have Beale back on board

By Liam FitzGibbon / Roar Guru

Controversial utility Kurtley Beale will join the Wallabies’ spring tour of Europe next week after being recalled to the squad by Michael Cheika.

The coach informed his squad on the eve of the Test against France in Paris that Beale will join the tour on Sunday for the final two games of the tour against Ireland and England.

Reds backrower Jake Schatz will also link up with the team in Dublin as cover for veteran Scott Higginbotham, who has been ruled out of the rest of the tour due to a hamstring injury.

Beale has not played for Australia since the loss to South Africa on September 27 and was left out of the spring tour squad after the text message scandal involving former staff member Di Patston.

The Waratahs playmaker was fined $45,000 by an independent tribunal for sending a lewd text picture message to Patston but escaped suspension after being found not guilty of sending a second, more offensive text.

Beale was also fined a further $3000 over an in-flight argument with Patston en route to Argentina with the scandal ultimately leading to the resignation of Patston and former coach Ewen McKenzie.

Cheika opted not to select Beale in his first squad as coach despite the playmaker being available, but left the door open saying he would be considered when fully fit.

Beale’s recall is sure to divide opinion but Wallabies skipper Michael Hooper denied it would prove a distraction.

“The players are really excited,” Hooper said after Australia trained at Stade de France on Friday.

“It’s going to be really refreshing to have two new guys come into the team.

“It’s going to be good to have KB in and around the environment, a place where he loves being.

“I’m really excited to see his face when he gets over here and get involved in training and maybe get a Test game.

“We need our best team over here to win our remaining games and KB is part of that.”

Both Hooper and Schatz will be eligible to face Ireland in Dublin next Saturday.

Sandbox, with regard to your police mates, I strongly suggest that if they are surprised at the number of accused who :get away with it" as you so quaintly put it, they need to look at how they do their police workand put together a decent brief. There are reasons we have separation of powers and one of them is to ensure that our enforcement arms do their job properly, gather evidence, establish a case AND meet all of the technical requirements of the law. People "get away" with crimes because they are not found guilty of the crime. Being a copper and thinking a person is guilty does not amount to guilt, that is what the judiciary is for. Police are there to establish the facts in evidence, not to determine guilt.

@ Chivas "The concept of throwing people out for the good of the team is sometimes a valid one, but it is for each manager or head coach in this situation to make for themselves. Sideline commentators who suggest this is the only way don’t strike me as people who have any idea how to manage or motivate people. It is harder to address a situation and find real solutions than throwing the baby out." What a load of tosh. I've run quite a few successful businesses and I know how to motivate people and get the best out of them. I also know when it's time to cut the d...heads and losers who always need another last chance.

But you get to take the high ground because you know a policeman and know a couple of sayings... laughable. Instead of milking the rhetoric, have a think about the purpose of the law and the way it is set up. If everything was so cut and dried, surely the person would be convicted. There are lawyers on both sides. Do you know what a QC is? There are also many cases where people are wrongfully found guilty. Ypur commentary is simple, childish talk.

No he couldn't, else one of the last three coaches would have chosen him to do so. They clearly don't have the same belief in Hodgson's impact at this level that some Force fans do.

Nobody has referred to his race as s reason for anything... That is what you choose to read. The only comment was a tongue in cheek comment aimed at someone calling him a dog... You are just twisting things which aren't there. Haven't we had enough of that? But your sentiment I agree with. It shouldn't play a part anymore than Di Patson's sex should.

KB back on tour BEFORE he even pays the fine for his last misdemeanor. My god the Wallabies really don't have any principles do they ! Sadly, I feel no grief that the Wallabies did not win last night. Sadly, I have no interest in watching them anymore. I have followed them around the world on supporter tours in the past. Now I will not even go to a local test match.

Wooblies I have to agree with the other guys here. There is no established "Di Patston group". You've got nothing. There was evidence presented to the tribunal that showed Beale sent one text. No evidence of others being involved (not sure how hard they looked but that's how it is). It's not reasonable to say others were invovled without the evidence. Hooper should have shut his gob while the whole airplane/text thing was under investigation, but now he's doing the right thing and being keen to see guys in the squad. I do not see this as a bad thing. In addition watch how he engaged with the ref today during the france game. He's not smirking, he's not whining, he having a discussion and shutting up when it is apparent the ref is done. He is learning and he is improving as captain and he is quite the machine getting around the field. We'd love a more experienced captain, but we don't have one and frankly Hooper is shaping up ok.

I took your advice Gator and read the ARU Code of Conduct. I figured it was the reasonable thing to do before I pulled the pin on supporting the Wallabies. What struck me was 10.2 (b) which states .... 2 of the 3 tribunal members are at the "absolute discretion of the ARU." In KB's case John Boultbee was appointed as an RUPA representative. What impartiality could we expect from a representative whose mission (according to their own publishing) is "to promote and protect the interests of all Members and to safeguard their rights at all times." At all times stands out as alarming to me ... not reasonably protect .... but protect at all times. It's reasonable to expect the RUPA agreement insists on an RUPA representative on any tribunal ..... but to believe that KB's tribunal was independant and objective is fanciful.

Precious??? Whatever that means. He is a useful player without doubt but he is not a captains a/hole whatever you believe. CANNOT BE REPLACED... what rubbish. Slipper is irreplaceable at the moment too and Kuridrani... doesn't make them captain material. There have been many players a darn sight better than Hooper that have been replaced. ,If you actually pulled your own head out rather than carrying on like a three year old schoolgirl infatuated with Hooper, you might be able to add something intelligent to the discussion,

Yes I think you're right Gator. The Code of Conduct Tribunal "investigation" was required as part of the RUPA agreement ..... their finding I recall being a "very serious" breach of conduct (which strangely some of the press reported as a KB vindication !). Yet it was the ARU integrity unit who was the investigator for the inflight incident though so there is some inconsistency, perhaps related to the seriousness of the crime and potential punishment. Nevertheless, I don't believe that requiring an independant tribunal investigate and adjudicate on guilt relieves the ARU of their power and responsibility to determine the punishment....unless of course they are willing to abrogate that responsibility. You respect those that accept the referees decision. In rugby I prefer to respect those who ensure the honour of the Wallaby jumper is maintained, those that fight for the principles of respect and responsibility. Thank god the Rabbitohs did not accept the referees decision when they got booted from the NRL. A lesson to us all that a referees decision should indeed be challenged when it is wrong.

You are entitled to your own opinion, Bruce, but not your own facts. The ARU does not get to adjudicate on its own Code of Conduct. Suggest you read it. Clauses 10 and 11 in particular. For mine, I respect those who abide by the referee's decision, even when they don't agree with it. Often called the rule of law.

I'm here early to bash you with my internet morals and it is totes worth my time (had a fox clanging around in my enclosed courtyard this morning at stupid o'clock). The question we could ask is "what would jesus do?" He'd probably advise forgiveness to Beale and call him up. But since Jesus as god is a complete fiction, I could give no copulatory acts for that view. Chieka has made the call as coach and I hope it comes off. I seriously doubt Beale has anything to offer against England. He'll get smashed unless he's off the bench. Ireland defensively is a little weaker and maybe he'll do alright there.

We don't actually know because the evidence available could not identify that person/phone. To play devil's advocate and rehash one unsubstatiated theory Di Patston is in fact Satan returned to reign over the world for 1000 years until the return of Christ, Patston fabricated the second text to embellish her story. This is why she wouldn't hand over her phone (although her story as I have seen it reported was that she did in fact provide the phone to the ARU and the phone has since gone missing. One of KB's phones relevant to some of the time frame also went missing but this I understand was not notified until he was asked to provide it.) I notice that Chieka is now reported to say that anyone who doesn't show respect or follow team behaviours will be out. At the same time he has also stated there are no written rules, just a standard of behaviour. Well, that is entirely clear for all involved. Behave to an acceptable standard or you are out, but I'm not going to tell you up front what that standard is. Should allow a lot of flexibility and allow him to modify his response according to who he wants in or out. That's excellent people management.

Mark, so why does McCaw last so long? Really have some doubts about his longevity given the NZ worship and vitriol whenever he is questioned. Same with Carter. NZ domination of this game is possibly coming at a 'China' like cost to the rest of the rugby world

with regard to the Dock. There is a saying that: only the stupid or poor go down. It's lawyers that get these criminals off. A good friend was a homocide cop, and he was amazed at the amount of times someone who clearely committed murder would get off from lawyers. You don't get to take the high ground on this. Your profession makes its money on getting guilty people off
