Bennett adds Blair to Broncos' stable

By Jim Morton / Roar Guru

Brisbane believe they have added the last piece in Wayne Bennett’s NRL puzzle by luring Kiwi powerhouse Adam Blair from the Wests Tigers.

The Broncos on Tuesday signed Blair to a three-year deal after the New Zealand forward’s release from the final season of his Tigers’ contract.

The 28-year-old endured a rollercoaster stint at the Tigers, labelled a flop in 2012 when he signed as a big-money recruit from Melbourne.

But Blair has shown great durability in the past two seasons, playing every match for the Tigers in 2013 and ’14, before finishing this year on a high with the Kiwis.

The 30-Test stalwart’s performance in the Four Nations triumph over Australia on Saturday night showed what an asset he could be for a Brisbane outfit lacking starch and size up front.

Prodigal coach Bennett had been on the lookout for a quality prop since Ben Hannant signed with North Queensland and Martin Kennedy (Sydney Roosters) and David Hala (Gold Coast) were shown the door.

“Adam is a highly experienced player,” Brisbane chief executive Paul White said. “He has enormous experience at both NRL and representative level, and will bring toughness and leadership to the Broncos’ squad.

“And at 111kg, he will also add some more size to our forwards’ stocks.”

Bennett is also set to officially reveal Darius Boyd as another star recruit in coming days, following the acquisition of Anthony Milford, Mitch Garbutt, James Gavet, Travis Waddell and Greg Eden.

Blair will begin pre-season training at Red Hill after Christmas, with new Tigers coach Jason Taylor granting him his release to relieve some salary-cap pressure.

Although the Tigers have also recently released Blake Austin and Bodene Thompson, and let Gavet and Cory Paterson go, Taylor has stressed the club won’t make any new signings for next season.

He aims to back his youth and take a strategic, long-term approach to recruitment.

“We’re planning for long-term success here and any decisions regarding signing new players will be made with this in mind,” Taylor said.

“We have a great group of young players coming through the Wests Tigers’ system and, from what I’ve seen of them so far, I’m confident that they will develop into a strong group of NRL players.”

Do what I used to do Dogs, tell every Bronco fan that their team isn't good enough to be in the Sydney Comp' and watch them go off their heads, it used to give me no end of amusement.

Thanks for that WDD. I knew there had to be something which had nothing to do with his playing ability. How dare players be so mercenary and demand top dollar for their brief sporting careers. Still glad he's coming to the Cowbies though.

Yeah, it's an interesting signing isn't it. Bennett's in that strange position where he can't get the team he really wants, as he's inherited this squad, so he has to make do with what's available. In my opinion, I think the Broncos could have done worse with the Blair signing. I like big agile and skilful middle-third players and he fits the bill on all three. I do hope he gets those penalties and errors out of his system though, if there's one thing I can't stand, it is that. You want assets, not liabilities. I do worry about their outside backs. Not a hell of a lot of pace there, although the Milford signing might obviously help there. You know, on another note, I always thought Justin Hodges could have been one of the games' best lock forwards. He would have needed to brush up on his front-on defence, but his footwork and ball-play is a marvel to behold. It's obviously too late now.

The story goes that he was telling the younger players to demand more money and that they should leave if the club doesn't offer it. It played against brisbanes culture of players accepting less to stay in Brisbane. Coach and board weren't happy about it and neither were some of the other senior players. If it wasn't for brisbanes lack of quality props he would've been gone before the seasons end.

Blair was better in the second row for Melbourne. He's pretty low on work rate in the middle of the park.

Now I'm living in Queensland (god help me!) I will be assuming an even more anti-bronco's position than I did when living in Sydney. Down with the Bronco's!

Correct Dogs. Barba and Hoffman have left town and Boyd is yet to sign. We have no noted fullbacks at all at the minute.

Not enough fullbacks.

Yea I would go with Copley he had spiders on Him last year, but I think Bennett may prefer a good defensive centre and Copley did make a few errors in defence last year, but I think they only way he will learn is if he is thrown in there. I would go with Copley first preference, if not Glenn. Reed offers nothing. Yea Glenn had issues with his back in high school and was not allowed to play contact sport so he played touch and excelled at it.

I confess I never knew that about Glenn's touch football background. If you had not have told me, I would never have guessed. I've never seen the kind of footwork or change of pace that you would need to excel in touch footy from Alex Glenn. Weren't you impressed by Copley? He's a fast, balanced runner with smooth acceleration and looks made to be the Broncos' left-centre. He'd be my pick.

Glenn is very agile, he was a gun at touch footy when he was younger, made the Australian schoolboy team I believe. He has very good feet, he just doesn't show it playing In the back row because he mainly runs straight lines, but one on one in the centres it would be a different story. He played in the centres when he first came into first grade in 08 or 09

Jack Reed is slow indeed, Dallas, and simply carries little or no threat running the football - but then you ruin it by suggesting Glen goes in his place. Surely the latter is just as slow and, like Reed, more suited to play the role of an industrious back-rower? Copley looks like a thoroughbred to me. I hope Bennett dares to go for his attacking threat and not the conservative pick of Reed or Glen.

Reed won't be there, he's too slow, my pick would dale Copley or Alex Glen to play left centre. There are better centres running around in the qld cup than jack reed.

As much as I dislike the Bronco's I have to admit a strong Brisbane is good for the NRL. The whole Broncos family are now circling the wagons and it should be an improvement on last year. But what I really want to know is what went on with Ben Hannant? I am very pleased he's playing for the Cowbies, but I'm not quite sure why he fell out of favour. I always thought he offered a lot as a player, and I don't get why he was kicked into touch by the Broncs way back in the season. Obviously more to that one.

Don't forget Bennett and Kearney worked together to get the Kiwis over the line to win the World Cup so I see no reason why they can't get the Bronks into a final or two. They have a history together and a damn good one. Kearney won't be going anywhere real soon and nor should he.

He could be. I havent heard what has happened there. I would have thought Bennett would get rid of him to be honest, or Kearney would have left of his own accord. NZ should employ him as a full timer.

Isn't Kearney the forwards coach at the Broncos.? Looks like uncle Wayne coming home is already lifting the fans spirits.
