Glory flying high after dream start

By Justin Chadwick / Wire

They sit on top of the pile, but Perth Glory aren’t stressing about the hungry pack trying to hunt them down.

Glory’s dream start to the season continued on Friday night when they posted a 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix at nib Stadium.

Perth only narrowly avoided the wooden spoon last season, but they are now celebrating their best start to an A-League campaign after posting six wins from the opening seven rounds.

Glory’s true test will come over the next fortnight when they face Brisbane and Sydney away in the space of six days, but coach Kenny Lowe said he wasn’t worried his side might now become the prime target of rival teams.

“I don’t think there’s any pressure. We just go about our business,” Lowe said.

“We’re not interested in league tables, especially after eight games. We might be interested after 27.

“We’ve got a full, healthy squad now, so there’s real competition for places. My job’s just going to get harder.”

Glory midfielder Ruben Zadkovich will miss the Brisbane clash after being sent off against the Phoenix in the 63rd minute.

Zadkovich was on the field for just 17 seconds before his hard tackle on Vince Lia earned him a straight red.

The former Jets skipper can consider himself a tad unlucky that he didn’t escape with a yellow instead, but Lowe didn’t hold out any hope the FFA would rescind the red card.

“Pfft. You’ll get six inches of snow next week (before that happens),” Lowe said tongue in cheek.

“I think he took some of the ball. Maybe he took some of the guy. I don’t know, I’ll have to have a look.

“He’s made a tackle, and the ref might have made a mistake. Nothing to speak about.”

Striker Jamie Maclaren will return against Roar after completing his recent international duties, while winger Sidnei (calf) could also be available.

Lowe praised the efforts of 17-year-old whiz kid Danny de Silva, who scored in the second minute against Wellington and also provided plenty of spark.

“He runs out of petrol a little bit, but he’s only 12,” Lowe said with a laugh.

“He’s good value, and scored a great goal.”

Phoenix came away empty handed from their two-game trek to Adelaide and Perth, but coach Ernie Merrick said the return of star midfielder Michael McGlinchey for next Sunday’s clash with Melbourne City in Wellington would be crucial.

McGlinchey missed the loss to Perth to be by his wife’s side for the birth of their daughter.

Im dreaming of no team in Freo. I already support my club and have been since I can remember. I willl never support no plastic franchise "club".

A Perth team is the only way to have a double header on say a Friday night that suits TV time slots.

I really can't see a second team in Perth period, i think the FFA find it rather inconvenient to have just the one. A bit of a bummer for thebird as i recall him wanting nothing to do with Perth Glory because it's too anglo.

The second WA based A League team in about 10 years time won't be based in Freo. They'll come from oop the north coast funded by rich Poms and called something like Northern Beaches FC.

Isn't that the guy who played for Ipswich Town in the 70s-80s? If he's as good a coach as he was s player then he will do well. Bit harsh to sack a title winning coach, but I sense things are not well behind the scenes at Roar. Players seem unhappy. Hopefully 3 points for Glory next week.

Another thing that pleases me about the Glory is the change in stadium management policies. No longer are you restricted to drinking alcohol in a small roped off area, and a general admission ticket now gets you a seat almost anywhere in the main stand. Small but sensible changes. Well done Glory.

Yes, let's get all the band wagon jumpers back on. Because that's how you create a solid supporter group. *facepalm*

Agree 100%. Risdon is brilliant. Da Silva has matured very quickly. The squad is excellent. I don't know how Kenny turned this around so quickly, but the buzz in the air is back. Let's hope they maintain it even after the inevitable minor setbacks. NIB could become a fortress again.

TOP 10 things Glory could do to ramp up crowds: (Not in any particular order) • Grow support in the active fan area at the family stand end- the young fans are doing a great job creating a unique atmosphere- out doing the shed! This is what makes our game different over AFL- maybe have a ‘bring-a-banner’ day prizes for the best = apple i5 phones etc. – cross promotion on social media. Loved how they did the Ponzi against the Wanderers! • Use radio ads (creative ads- get a top 2 agency in Perth to write a campaign) targeting young fans- spend the money to get reach. • Don’t ignore the humble car bumper sticker- remember how cars had Glory branding when Tana used Chicken Treat and the Sunday Times( I think) to distribute thousands of them. Print them up in China – cheap as chips. Stick them in the West or ST – number them and tie them in with breakfast radio promotion- if your number is this range call now to win tickets to the game – all go in to a major end of season draw. • Have some specific theme days- EG: Christmas game- Dress up as Santa/ Elves/ Reindeer- where Santa hat – prizes for best dressed- Have Santa visit at half time for the kids. OR have a Grandparents day (So many are carers for kids these days for mum and dad- give them a reward) Grandparents (show your pension/seniors) card) Kids under 16 get in free with their Grandparent(s) at a designated game. Or Members bring a mate day Or Celebrated ST Pats Day in that week; everyone wears green- use Andy Keogh to promote! Consider Easter too- eggs for the kids – come dressed as the Easter Bunny! • Charity promotion to develop community good will to the club and the code. Have a Telethon match day- donate gold coin matched by the club. Have the players visit the new children’s Hospital etc. • Seek out 7 , 9 or 10 to host a locally produced Glory afternoon TV show on one of their digital channels • Invite a school class (FREE) 100 from your school – represent your school at each Glory match day – develop advocates for the club to spread the word and build on fan base And influence with parents • Send the Glory marketing and promotions team with the club management to spend a week fact-finding at the Seattle Sounders set in the MLS – the highest attended club in the MLS – see what they do for promote and market to increase crowds. • Add value to the cost of junior registration fees- all juniors who play in WA automatically get 5 free tickets to Glory games throughout the year. They are our future. • Pick a medium and dominate it- perhaps approach Community Newspapers Group (where AFL doesn’t dominate media) to do a 4 page Glory insert each week (as what used to be in the West) promoting Glory – the game in local area– run promotions/ local football stories about local players youngsters etc. it in- Community New should find sponsors for this – would create extra ad revenue/readership for them and do a great job for glory in the Community – at grass roots level etc.

I was very confident Perth would be firmly entrenched amongst the high flyers this season - albeit their No.1 spot after R7, I'd not forecast. Only 9 days ago, people were willing to ignore the facts & make emotional prognostications that "Wanderers and Roar to come home with a wet sail" http://www.theroar.com.au/2014/11/14/on-your-marks-wanderers-and-roar-to-come-home-with-a-wet-sail/ That sail must be getting absolutely soaked. :-D

We will also know we've made it when it doesn't seem like such a choir for the Fox sports team to acknowledge we exist.

Its starting to happen, over 9k on a Friday against Wellington whilst not spectacular is solid and i doubt we have pulled that crowd against them ever. From personal experience i have friends from the old days who would only come maybe twice a year in recent years and are coming most weeks and are already making plans for Newcastle. Im confident if the team keeps this up and with a lot more Saturday night kick offs that 5 figure crowds will be the norm.

The only thing missing is people saying "Keh-oh" properly. That's when we'll know Perth have made it.

Absolutely chuffed with the boys and how they are going about their business, its too early to say if Glory are premiership or championship favourites at this stage but i think we'll be right in the mix with the teams who are in the top 4 right now, the others (maybe apart fro Phoenix) are too far behind to mount any challenge. The side has been excellent all over the pitch, the back four are very solid and in particular our full backs, Risdon is the best in the A League. Midfield is creative and work extremely hard without the ball, Australian football fans can start to get excited about De Silva who looks like a seasoned pro its easy to forget he's only got a handful of 90min performances under his belt and is a boy playing against men. Keogh is brilliant and Mclaren has surprised and is chipping in with goals. Massive kudos to Kenny Lowe as well and im quite happy to be eating humble pie, very humble about his role in this great start you can tell it's a happy and united bunch of players and alot of that is down to him. COYGB

Glory just need the crowds to match their performance now. They haven't spent money on a marquee maybe they could ramp up promotion and advertising??
