The San Francisco 49ers are in tatters

By Ty / Roar Rookie

I am a Niners fan, and a very loyal one. But even I admit the Niners have been horrific this season in the NFL.

They should be 10-3 but due to a collapse, a stupid decision to not give Frank Gore the ball, playing like the opposition and losing in the process, the San Francisco 49ers are 7-6.

They should have won the 28-20 loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 2, as well as the 13-10 loss to the St Louis Rams in Week 9 and the 13-24 loss to the Oakland Raiders in Week 14.

Let’s take a closer look at why they should’ve won each game.

Week 2 – Chicago Bears
After the third quarter the Niners led 20-7. Let me make this clear, to win the Bears needed three touchdowns, and that’s exactly what happened.

After 1:19 elapsed the Bears led 21-20. Let’s go through this again. With 14 minutes left the Niners were down by a sole point. They needed any kind of score but unfortunately the Niners didn’t score for the rest of the game.

Week 9 – St Louis Rams
I have no idea what happened before the stupidest thing I have seen to date. The Niners were down 13-10 and had fourth and two at the Rams two. They had two options to go forward.

They could either let Phil Dawson a gimme to send it into OT, or hand the ball off to Frank Gore and have him run it in.

But no. The Niners chose to have Colin Kaepernick do a ‘QB Sneak’. It would’ve worked, had he not fumbled the ball! The Niners thus lost. This was probably their worst loss so far but then they went to Oakland.

Week 14 – Oakland Raiders
It seemed like California would have a great sports day. The LA Galaxy won the MLS Cup in extra time and Anaheim beat the Jets in overtime but unfortunately the Niners were not going to let California have a red and gold win.

They would let the lowly 1-11 Oakland Raiders shock all of California, putting in a horrible performance as they were upset 24-13.

These results have meant the Niners basically need to win their remaining three games. The Niners cannot win the division but with the right scenarios they can get a Wild Card, however they cannot lose any more. Because if they do then the Niners will have a very long eight months of waiting.

[UPDATE: The Niners lost to the Seahawks 17-7. As a result this article has been updated. To see this update please read: The San Francisco 49ers are in tatters (Part 2)]

I give him one more year as the starter with the Niners, and then they'll move on. His contract is structured in a way that they could actually cut him this offseason, and still save money on next years cap: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-possibly-intriguing-nfl-qb-trade-market/

Kaerpernick ain't going anywhere, he's just signed a $100m plus deal to stay with the 49ers...

I'm with you Ty, big Niners fan here, this season has been a train wreck. I thought we had the cattle to make another decent run but the wheels fell off in the offseason. The Harbaugh v Baalke standoff, the Aldon Smith dramas, Novaro Bowman injury and player unrest with Harbaugh has ensured a wretched offseason. Despite that they started the season with a good win at Dallas. Then the Bears debacle in the home opener in the new Stadium. I thought things weren't right after that loss, what a meltdown by Kap. The loss against the Rams was inexcusable. They had a second down play on the goal line, instead of handing it off to Frank, they call a pass play which Crabtree drops. Then the ill fated fumble when a FG would have put it into OT. But the absolute low point was the loss at Oakland. The Offence has been completely inept, with so much Pro Bowl talent on that side of the ball it beggers belief how bad they have been. It's a combination of poor O-line, Kap struggling in the pocket, receivers dropping balls and not going to the run more. They completely lost there identity. This is on Harbaugh and particularly Greg Roman. The defence have played well and kept the team in most games this season. It's been hard to watch such a talented team struggle so much. This is a squad that were a couple of plays away from playing 3 straight Super Bowls and should have yielded at least one title. I'm convinced a different Offensive Coordinator would have ensured another Lombardi trophy. What is clear is Harbaugh is on the way out. He has been fantastic however disappointed he has overseen this rabble of a season. Jed York has some big decisions to make regarding the next Head coach. Does he promote Vic Fangio and bring in a offensive guru to try and resurrect Kap. Or does he bring someone in from the outside. If he goes with an outsider Jon Gruden is one of the first guys he should ring. A proven offensive mind, maybe he can salvage Kaps career and get the offence back on track. Who ever takes over will have a strong roster to work with, smart GM and an innovative owner. This is a great job.
