The Jets continue to fly under the radar this season, but for all the wrong reasons.
Winless so far, the home side tonight have only managed four points from ten games, picking up four draws along the way. Less than spectacular last week, surrendering to top-of-the-table Perth Glory 2-0, Newcastle will need to rise above looming clouds if they are any hope of getting a result tonight and from the season as a whole.
Fielding veteran striker Joel Griffiths, young Australian goalie Mark Birighitti and promising Argentinian Jeronimo Neumann, the Jets certainly have players capable of helping the side fly much higher than they are.
Adelaide United arrive jubilant after triumphing 1-0 over Perth Glory in the first FFA Cup final. Taking out the title on Tuesday night via a Cirio goal in the 67th minute, United haven’t had much time to celebrate and may well experience a bit of a championship hangover. After losing 1-0 last Friday night to Brisbane Roar however, there will be a definite emphasis on returning to winning ways.
Currently third, Adelaide are two points behind Melbourne Victory and five behind the team they upset on Tuesday, Perth Glory. A win could prove vital to United’s desire for more silverware this season.
Set to play their third game in seven days, Adelaide are a surprisingly resilient and unchanged squad. Defender Osama Malik, who has missed the past few games, the only notable absentee having been again left out as he recovers from a calf injury. The Reds are also boosted by the return of midfielder Marcelo Carrusca, who they sorely missed last week against Brisbane.
Newcastle are similarly near full strength with only Dutch defender Kew Jaliens missing as he serves a two-game suspension.
Although plenty of space separating them on the ladder, expect a tight contest, with Newcastle always a stronger side at home and Adelaide possible suffering from their midweek triumph.

MATCH REVIEW The Newcastle Jets have claimed ther first win of the season upsetting FFA Cup champions Adelaide United 2-1. After a tight and ultimately goaless first half, the Jets started the scoring in the 50th minute when Neville poked home from close range between the legs of Galekovic. United who struggled all night in the final third were then able to respond ten minutes later via Goodwin who tapped home after some nice work from Mabil led to Jeggo being fed through on goal and then able to cross to an unmarked Goodwin. Dominating possession after this point, Adelaide looked to claim all three points but were undone in the 85th minute when a deflected cross from Carney led to Neumann slotting home for the Jets. Newcastle were then able to hold on for their first win of the season with Adelaide less than critical after triumphing Tuesday night in the FFA Cup. It may have taken ten rounds but the Jets claim their first win of the season with a resilient performance over a less than convincing Adelaide outfit. FINAL SCORE Newcastle Jets 2 Adelaide United 1
