My 2015 Wallabies World Cup squad

By Danny Shazza / Roar Rookie

The Wallabies travel to England for the 2015 Rugby World Cup having experienced their worst European tour in years. Will they turn it around and lift the Webb Ellis for a third time?

Firstly, before we choose the squad we must finalise the coaching positions.

Michael Cheika has reported that the coaching positions will be finalised by early January with a scrum guru to be appointed soon, most likely to the expense of scrum coach Andrew Blades.

The Brumbies’ Steven Larkham – who is predicted to be a future Wallabies coach – is keen to join the staff for the World Cup campaign as a backs coach. Force head coach and former Wallabies assistant coach Michael Foley will be in charge of the forwards.

Furthermore in the coaching structure I would appoint Richard Graham (Queensland Reds head coach) and Tony Maghan (Melbourne Rebels head coach) to run a training and fitness camp in Australia for fringe players as injury cover.

If funding is an issue for the ARU, why not create a sleeve sponsor for the wallabies World Cup jersey? I’m sure more corporate support could be found.

Now, what about on the field?

Props: Benn Robinson

James Slipper
Paul Alo – Emile
Sekope Kepu

Hookers: Tatafu Polota Nau
Stephen Moore

Locks: Rob Simmons
Will Skelton

Flankers: Michael Hooper

David Pocock

No.8: Scott Higinbotham

Halfback: Nick Phipps
Will Genia
Luke Burgess

Fly half: Quade Cooper

Inside centre: Christian Leilifano
Matt Toomua

Outside centres: Chris F Sautia

Wingers: Adam Ashley Cooper
Karmichael Hunt
James O Connor

Fullback : Kurtley Beale
Israel Folau

Head coach: Michael Cheika
Backs coach: Stephen Larkham
Forwards coach: Michael Foley
Defensive coach: Nathan Grey

Fringe players would include: Laurie Weeks, Saia Fainga’a, Luke Jones, Liam Gill, Ben Mcalman, Nic White, Kyle Godwin, Henry Speight and utility Rob Horne

Here I have selected a balanced mix of reputation, aggression, skill, size, incumbency and experience. Some players who have had heavy involvement with the Wallabies over the last couple of years have been left out for various reasons, most notably Scott Fardy. I am not a Fardy fan and I think with David Pocock back and Sean McMahon coming up, there will be no place for him.

For the match day 23 there are returns from injury and a recruitment

James Slipper
Stephen Moore (vc)
Sekope Kepu
Will Skelton
Rob Simons
David Pocock
Michael Hooper (c)
Scott Higginbotham
Nick Phipps
Bernard Foley
Karmichael Hunt
James O Connor
Tevita Kuridrani
Adam Ashley Cooper (vc)
Israel Folau

17. Benn Robinson
18. Scott Sio
19. James Horwill
20. Wycliff Palu
21. Will Genia
22. Quade Cooper
23. Kurtley Beale

With this coaching structure and a fit tour squad, the Wallabies could be a real threat at the World Cup. It’s not too late but it’s not easy either.

Michael Cheika has a reputation of performing miracle turnarounds in teams he coaches and if the Wallabies environment is supportive and focused we will have the resources needed for a successful World Cup.

The advantage in 2015 is that many stars are returning from injury. David Pocock, Stephen Moore and Wycliff Palu – all forwards – will provide a major boost for the under-strength pack.

The Wallabies have the right ingredients, will they be able to bring home Bill Ellis?

Can't have shirt sponsors at the world cup, so not sure there would be too many companies interested.

Doesn't leave 'til the end of 2015 so he would be eligible, but I'm not sure if you should break in a new player in such an important position so close to the world cup.

Scott Allen recently wrote a piece where he demonstrated the basic All Black game plan. I remember reading it and thinking it played directly to some of the Wallabies strengths. Cruden appears to run his game in a similar way to Cooper, but in the example relies on Dagg to be a second playmaker. The Wallabies have used a second playmaker for some time now, and I think it’s the best tool we have when we use it correctly. Scott also demonstrated that their game plan uses pods of forwards hitting the line, with the playmaker loitering behind them for the offload. With the Wallabies using two playmakers, and having a great running fullback, this method would keep the opposition guessing and put our strongest assets to better use. It would also put our forwards to better use. We may all want a monster mongrel second row, but what we have in Australia are workhorses, so let’s put them to work. At present my team is: 1. Slipper 2. Moore 3. Kepu 4. Fardy 5. Simmons 6. Higginbotham 7. Pocock (assuming form) 8. Palu (assuming fitness) 9. Genia 10. Cooper 11. O’Connor 12. Toomua 13. Kuridrani 14. Speight/Cummins (whoever is in form) 15. Folau 16. Polota-Nau 17. Sio 18. Alo-Emile/Weeks 19. Horwill/Carter 20. McCalman 21. Phipps 22. Beale 23. AAC I’m reserving judgement on Hunt until I’ve seen him play a few games, but I have no doubt he’ll prompt a re-think. The reserve forwards will also rely very much on form at the end of the SR season, and as much as I like him I just don’t see Hooper fitting into my game plan unless Pocock is injured again. If the Cooper/Toomua combination is not firing for whatever reason, I’d prefer to see Cooper come off, Toomua move to Fly-Half and Beale move to Inside Centre. I think you always need one level-headed game manager in one of those positions, particularly to organise defence, and I just didn’t have the space for Foley or CLL.

If Bruce Willis was selected to play center you would not be surprised as it is illogical?

Gill and Hodgson are 7s and dont cover other positions well. McMahon is a genuine utility but isnt there yet but after another season he will be.

It will be more like. 1) Sio 2) Slipper 3) Kepu 4) Alexander 5) Robinson 6) Simmons 7) Horwill 8) Skelton 9) Fardy 10) Palu 11) McMahon 12) Poey/Hodgson 13) Hooper 14) McCalman 15) Charles 16) Moore 17) TPN 18) Phipps 19) Genia 20) White 21) Foley 22) Cooper 23) Toomua 24) Beale 25) Kuridrani 26) AAC 27) JOC 28) Cummins 29) Horne 30) Folau 31) Hunt Training with the squad: Speight, Lealiifano, Carter, a form tighthead. Poc0ck and Hooper wont both be in the same 23 let alone the same 15.

Sam Carter should not be in the squad. I'm not able to watch this guy and come up with anything he contributes to the team that makes it better, not up to international standard

I don't think anyone but Moore and Pocock forwards would make the 1999 side. So much for professionalism. Lots of Milan for not much talent

Don't worry, AC, although they're not fully fledged Kiwis you've still got Speight, Genia, O'Connor, Folau and Kuridrani to keep alive the target of having an entire 'Aussie' backline with not one player who is born in Australia to Australian parents.

I don't like the look of the selection of the back-row. Only five players for three starting and one bench spots, and one of those players is Pocock (who, let's face it, has significant injury issues). Palu is a perennial problem; goes great in Super Rugby but too often doesn't replicate that form against the best international opposition, or only fleetingly. McMahon has potential and could be great come 2019, but I don't think he's there just yet, having had only a single Super Rugby season. Gill, McCalman and Hodgson are workers who'll play well on the heavier pitches in the NH and can cover multiple positions

Thanks. Firstly the coaches: - Three different coaches, with different proriities - Different ideas re how to play the game and players to select - Unless they align in the in four test, whilst competing against each other in SR. Squad looks as good as it can be. 23 players: - Lineout will be a issue - JOC and Special K, too early to call - THP reserve missing - Fardy, if recovers from his op / 2013 form, will be indispensable

Same old, same old but Cheika might be able to put more life in your selections. As the EOYT showed, it's too early for McMahon and I'd slot Fardy back as a 6 to cover the rightful captain, Pocock, unless P is selected as a 7. Don't get me wrong as I have a lot of time for Hooper but, like McM, time is on his side to develop into the best ever 7 and captain for RWC 2019.
