The CEO of Australian Rugby Union Bill Pulver answers questions at the 2015 Super Rugby launch in Sydney.
Pulver, known for his startlingly accurate pre-season predictions, famously made the call yesterday that three Super Rugby teams from Australia would make the finals in 2015. With the Waratahs, Brumbies, Force, Rebels and Reds all looking promising in the pre-season, who’s going to argue with him.
Well, there’s no shortage of people who will argue with the CEO of the game in Australia, so probably everyone.
Bill also spoke about the health of the game in Australia, and what we should be looking forward to from the ARU in the new year.

I will repeat myself. Surely a huge part of why the Waratahs fan base is Eastern Suburbs based is because that’s where the team plays. If you want to claim playing at Homebush alienates your Eastern fans than you have to accept that playing at Moore Park alienates your Western fans.

haha. Just noticed the first paragraph. Pulver is also CEO of 'Unino'. Unino is a Game Co based in South Kalimantan. I hope theyre making money

You watch next year as the Tahs average close to 30,000 this season. It was 20k last year outside of the finals and we'll now be able to push bodies like the SCG Trust around. They scuppered the Private Equity deal and they can go jump. It sounds like they had to pay the Tahs overs for all their games so sucked in... Hate the SCG trust...

Why take it out west when all the supporters are east. Great logic, Hmebush is crap as you well know.

Tahs are rugby snobs.

I believe the full name of the Brumbies is The ACT and Southern NSW Brumbies. No one uses the second part of the name because it's a bloody mouthful. Pretty sure this was cause when the Brumbies came around, it was seen as better for the Southern NSW supporters to support them, as they're closer.

Cheers for that explanation. Seems to put things into perspective.

Train I want to hear your views on another matter, linked to this. -Do you want Australia to have a 6th super rugby side, and if so would it be west Sydney?

Pjm, I'd disagree with that. You aren't going to lose your Eastern Suburbs support base over 2 games a year. But you may gain additional fans. Many ES fans will travel to homebush. If you can get WS fans to travel to Moore Park you will increase your membership and fanbase. Surely a huge part of why the Waratahs fan base is Eastern Suburbs based is because that's where the team plays. If you want to claim playing at Homebush alienates your Eastern fans than you have to accept that playing at Moore Park alienates your Western fans.

Maybe not, he struggled to name the sponsors.

The qld management work well to get supporters to games , the tahs work to get corporate boxes sold. That is the difference. Cheika is changing the culture so the tahs represent the people not just the sponsors. Tahs to go back to back with a great coach. If you had qru management with nsw coaching staff rugby would be in a fantastic place. NAWru is as bad as the aru.

That is true, those areas were closer to the ACT. Though my point was more along the lines, that I could not see QLD rural areas closer to NSW supporting the Tahs. I get the perception the Reds represent QLD. So what are the waratahs doing so wrong that even people in Western Sydney are complaining? For the areas I have been in rural NSW closer to the ACT, there was not much love for sydney, though dont get me wrong, they disliked canberra more (politicians)! An honest question, cause i never understood why the Tahs are perceived as east sydney/northshore. Seems all the other Super Rugby teams have support of thier entire cities/states.

pjm who says you can't play at Parramatta, WSW seem to just cope fine.

I suppose many of these rural areas that you talk of are nearby to the ACT? They have a closer connection to them because they play in the same rugby comps and go there for all their big city needs where as Sydney is too far away.

Maybe this is why the Rebels just called themselves Melbourne, so they didn't have hear the whinges of people from towns of 5000 people in the middle of no where. Anyone mentioning a 6th team in Western Sydney is deluded, oh wait it's Johnno. No point playing at Homebush when you're not filling it past the capacity of SFS. SFS has better viewing angles, less hassle to get in, and has restaurants and bars near by. There will also be the light rail running to it in the future.

Good to see a bit of confidence. I know the Q&A is QandA / four corners. But I wished they would ask a few more interesting questions

Maybe the ARU choose to expand into VIC and WA cause NSW already had a team? I always thought of the Waratahs as the NSW team, though always did wonder why so many people outside of Sydney, especially in rural areas supported the Brumbies. As a serious question, do the Tahs make an effort outside of the east syd/northshore? Note : this reply was to Not bothered

Because it isnt up to Pulver. Australia already has 5 teams and Pulver cant just introduce another one.

Tahs Rugby is weighing up options as to the future home games of the Waratahs, with one proposal to abandon ANZ Stadium in the west in favour of playing all regular season games at Moore Park’s Allianz Stadium. “Broadly, the Waratahs have an audience which comes from inner-city, eastern suburbs, north shore, so you’ve got to play where they want to watch the games,” Pulver said. Says it all Billy. Aren't the Tahs suppose to be a provincial team representing, the whole of NSW. Doesn't seem that way. No wonder the fans are abandoning OZ rugby, so much for wider audience. If the Tahs are so east sydney/northshore, why not put a west sydney super rugby team in the comp.
