Luongo fielding offers like the pretty girl on prom night

By News / Wire

Third-tier English club Swindon Town have reportedly knocked back more offers for Australia’s Asian Cup star Massimo Luongo.

The 22-year-old midfielder is a man in demand after being named player of the tournament in the Socceroos’ historic triumph.

Swindon Link Sport reported on Monday the club turned down a transfer offer from Championship club Cardiff City early on the final day of the English transfer window.

It followed the club rejecting a STG2.5 million ($A4.87 million) offer from a Turkish club last week while Swindon chairman Lee Power confirmed there had also been big-money approach from a Middle Eastern club over the weekend.

Luongo is keen to stay and help third-placed Swindon fight for promotion and the club will only sell him if it can loan him back for the rest of the season.

Swindon Town manager Mark Cooper on Sunday described Luongo as “the David Beckham of Australian football” and said he wouldn’t sell his star player unless the club was in “desperate, desperate need.”

oh, im aware of the premise, joon. why, i remember back in the late 90s on the usenet groups, creating exactly the same kinds of ruckus with the kids who thought they were so hot. johnno gets off on the attention, same as we did back then, same as all trolls.

" rarely agree with what he says but jeez he gets up you blokes noses doesnt he": Sure, but intentionally posting comments on discussion boards to inflame, annoy and irritate people is commonly referred to as trolling and is considered bad manners and is hardly a mature way to engage in public discussions.

Harry Kewell was probably, stand alone, the most technically skilled player we've ever produced. At his best he was awesome, and if his career hadn't been crippled with injury after injury would have clearly stood head and shoulders above all others in the position as the best footballer Australia has ever produced. We aren't going to be producing a lot of players like Harry. It would be good if we could have some come along over the next few years, but we can't compare every player to Harry. You also have to remember that the career paths have changed since then. Harry's heritage allowed him to get a Visa to play in England really easily, where other players find it harder. Over recent years it's been tightened even more. If you don't have the parentage that means you can get a European passport, it can be harder to get into many European countries to play than it used to be. Add to that the fact that the level of play staying in Australia has increased a lot with the A-League continuing to grow, and players are often already into their 20's before they actually leave Australia to head over to Europe these days, you won't find so many heading to England as a 14 year old like Harry did, these days.

Cardiff are in the Championship, if Swindon Town manage to win promotion as they are currently on track to do, then he'll be playing in the Championship next year if he stays at Swindon Town. With the sort of position he plays, which is one of the key skill positions in the side, he needs to be at a club where he can remain one of the dominant players in the club. So if he's good enough to be that player in an EPL team then that's great, but he'd be better off staying at Swindon Town and hopefully playing in the Championship next season than moving to a better club and playing very little first team football. Definitely doesn't want to be going to play in the middle east. This is not the time in the career to chase the money to those sorts of places.

Johnno, for someone who is supposedly 'sophisticated' you sure do suck at grammar. Learn how to construct a sentence, then come back and comment.

What annoys me most about Johnno is that I have to scroll further on my phone to read the comments that actually have some relevance or insight.

This is true, all in the hands of Swindon Town. As the article says the perfect outcome for them would be to sell him for peak price but have him loaned back for the remainder of the season.

The Southampton league one side of a few years ago is another perfect example. Lambert, Lallana, Sheiderlin etc all playing 3rd division football a few years ago are now established Premier league players.

Sorry, I wasn't implying his contract expires at the end of the season; rather as the contract moves towards expiration the transfer value diminishes since the player can simply wait for the contract to terminate and pocket the transfer fee as part of a signing on bonus. The reason I thought a transfer is more likely to occur sooner, rather than later, is because Luongo's transfer value should be at its peak right now after being awarded MVP of the tournament. Even if he does really well for Swindon during the next 5 months I can't imagine his value rising higher than current. In fact, I'd say it's more likely his value will diminish slightly over the next 5 months unless he plays outstanding football for Swindon and the frenzy about his form at the Asian Cup fades. From reports on SBS, it seems Swindon will be ready to trade if a $10 million transfer fee is on the table.

As i said in my post below some players have a harder road to the top than others, that doesn't always have anything to do with ability. Massimo got a bit unlucky at Tottenham in that when they sold Bale they went out and spent a tonne of money on midfielders and getting into the first 11 would have been extremely difficult.
