Merrin to definitely quit Dragons: report

By News / Wire

In-demand St George Illawarra forward Trent Merrin has reportedly already made the decision that the upcoming NRL season will be his last at the Dragons.

Off contract at the end of 2015, the Dragons are believed to have offered the NSW representative an $1.8 million, three-year deal to re-sign with the club.

But according to Merrin’s agent, Wayne Beavis, the 25-year-old Wollongong-born Merrin won’t be in the Red V beyond this season.

“100 per cent, it’s over,” Beavis told Fairfax Media on Tuesday.

“He won’t be at the Dragons next year.”

Penrith, Cronulla and the Warriors are believed to be in the hunt for Merrin’s signature and he’s ready to make a decision on his new club when he returns early next week from the World Club Series in England.

Merrin is regarded as one of the best young forwards in the game and has played over 100 games for St George Illawarra since his debut in 2009.

He's overrated for 600k. For 400k he's great.

I think you missed the point of the supercoach thing. People are saying Merrin is overrated and what Stew is saying is that his stats and workload suggest differently.

Can't agree with this list. McKendry, Lillyman, Creagh, Galloway do not have the skill and motor that Merrin does. As for the locks, the only players I would rate higher are Gallen and Parker who are now in their twilights.

I think when the Dragons are quoted as saying its our best ever offer for a forward that has been knocked back I doubt that comes from the player manager

That's rubbish. Doust should never have let josh morris go but he certainly should have brought him back to the club a few years ago when his dogs contract expired. Doust is to blame for 2 of our most talented local juniors ever playing for another club

I think there a lot of people angry with the loss of Brett Morris. I also think the offer from the dogs was not as great as you may assume above. The anger towards doust is more so to do with the state of affairs since the loss of bennett. They have not had a contingency plan and as the head honco, it's his cross to bear. At club level, Merrin is a premier forward, whether you believe it or not. He attracts defenders, he offloads, he plays long minutes and he gets through a lot of work. The dragons have a salary cap problem, a team roster balance problem and from what I can see a management problem. When was the last time the dragons lost their best junior in years? and of all places to go, they chose the Sharks? (Jack Bird).

Good on Trent Merrin for trying to improve his income on the open market. I personally think the Dragons have given him a good offer but if he feels he can get better so be it.

Some interesting assumptions there. 'The Dragons leaked the figures so that people didn't assume they let him go cheaply.' Maybe, although these types of things are usually done by the player's management to build their worth - in any case the media rarely seem to have trouble finding the numbers. Who knows? Does it matter? 'Doust is on the nose for releasing Morris.' Only the most one-eyed Doust haters could infer that he did something wrong here. The Dogs offered ridiculous money for a winger and the intangible but alluring benefit of playing with his brother. Doust was wise not to match the first part, and couldn't have matched the second if he wanted to. 'People are hypocrites for criticising Merrin for being money-hungry and then using him in a Supercoach team.' Umm, yeah OK.

Dragons are currently equal first in 2015, where's your team? The comment was a little tongue in cheek - it's not exactly unknown in this comp for teams to come from the clouds to be contenders though. Parra 2009, Chooks 2010, Newcastle 2013, even the Dogs last year weren't really considered contenders until almost Grand Final day. Of course none of them won the GF but that's got to turn around somewhere :-)

I still find it rather compelling that the $600K figure was so readily leaked to the media by St George themselves early on in the piece which I think was a means of saving face with a supporter base that is already on the nose against Peter Doust & co for releasing Brett Morris. At least the club thinks they can save face by saying that Merrin didnt go cheaply. Who knows if this figure is even true? Only Merrin, his manager & the clubs negotating with him know the real $$$$ on offer. As for Merrin's performances hard to believe a player who isnt far off being a Gallen or Parker in terms of the metres, hit ups, tackles & offloads provided for his team week in week out can be villified by so many fans when I bet quite a few of them cant wait to put him in their Supercoach teams.

What? The Dragons have Buckleys of getting anywhere near the Grand Final let alone winning the Premiership.

I think that everyone is automatically blaming Merrin and his manager. From what I have seen of the kid he seems to be a team player and he looks to have a lot to offer. For some reason, since Mary took over as coach Merrin has been starting games on the bench. His minutes and effectiveness have diminished significantly. Maybe he wants to leave because he actually wants to start games or play 80 minutes. It seems that he and Mary just dont get on. Also, the dragons have come out and said that they have made him a big offer. Who are we to say that this isnt made up of mainly 3rd party deals???

Can't help people are being a bit hatsh on Merrin. Last year he ran more metres than anyone (only he and Creagh averaged more than 100m per game). He had way more hit-ups than anyone else. He averaged more than 30 tackles per game, and was second only to Mitch Rein on the season tackle count. I'm not saying that he's worth $600k a year, but St George are ceratinly going to miss him.

Now you've got a decent fullback and halves do yourselves a favour Dragons, punt Rein and get a real hooker with the cap leverage Merrin leaves..M'bye would be perfect, next in line Hastings from the Roosters..Carter from the Titans

Its the same with tamallolu imo. I think clubs are offering the big bucks more on potential than what they have done so far in thier careers. They are both young and forwards hit thier best form in their late 20's.

He could have ensured his future by resigning with the dragons and putting a ring on fitzgibbons. Many a men are getting hitched with sugarmoms these days.
