Cummins in, Doherty out for Australia

By The Roar / Editor

Pat Cummins will replace Xavier Doherty in the only change to the Australian XI for the side’s last World Cup pool match.

But skipper Michael Clarke said it would be “silly” to think the team would remain unchanged moving into the finals.

Spinner Doherty was brought into the team for their 64-run victory over Sri Lanka at the SCG on Sunday.

But selectors have instead named paceman Cummins for Saturday’s Bellerive Oval fixture.

Shane Watson remains in the side after his half century against Sri Lanka.

“I’ve always been a big fan of spin bowling,” Michael Clarke said after the Sri Lankan match.

“Obviously wickets determine how big a part they play, but I still think change of pace is a massive part of any form of the game.

“Sometimes it’s not necessarily just that the ball is spinning or not spinning. “It might be the tempo of the game, quickening it up by getting through a few overs, taking pace off the ball.”

It's an offence to spinners to call Doherty a spinner.

Doherty is fine if he doesn't have to come in and bowl to two set batsmen then have catches dropped off him.

Clarke may be a fan of spin bowling, unfortunately Doherty is simply not good enough. Hopefully the selectors don't look at any pitches in the knock-out phase and think it looks good for spinners and therefore pick Doherty as that would be a big mistake. If they reach the final the three grounds they'll play on will be Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. I don't think there is a team left in the competition that wouldn't be extremely pleased to see Doherty on the team sheet ahead of Cummins and Hazlewood on any of those grounds.
