Brisbane Broncos 24

Match preview:

The New Zealand Warriors will be looking to go two from two at home this afternoon as they take on the Brisbane Broncos at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland. Join The Roar from 11.45am (AEDT) for live coverage.

The Warriors will look to win their second match at home for the 2015 season however, they will need to improve on last week’s second half.

Despite a 90 per cent completion rate, New Zealand’s halves must put boot to ball and improve their kicking metres considerably. Andrew McFadden and the Warriors football department must work on their attack if they are to crack Brisbane’s tough defence.

Brisbane’s defence was outstanding for the second week running, as they beat North Queensland for their first win in Brisbane for 2015. The Broncos will look to dominate in the kicking department, with Ben Hunt’s big boot set to test young Warriors fullback, Tuimoala Lolohea, who moves to fullback in place of English star Sam Tomkins who is sidelined for four to six weeks with a knee injury.

Look to Chad Townsend and Thomas Leuluai to continue their great form for this season as they battle the Broncos’ Ben Hunt, hungry for his third Australian jersey ahead of the Anzac Test in early May. Tuimoala Lolohea must step up if the Warriors are going to win this match. Fullback is Lolohea’s natural position, however he has made some big mistakes at the back in the past.

Matthew Allwood will make his Warriors debut in the centres. In the only other change for the Warriors, Dominique Peyroux has been added to a five-man bench.

The Broncos have named an unchanged side from their huge win over the Cowboys, with Todd Lowrie added to a five-man bench.

Both teams have won 15 games apiece in their battles against each other since 1998, however the Broncos have poor form at Mount Smart Stadium, winning only 4 of their last 14 matches. Last time the two teams met, the Broncos beat New Zealand 28-22 in a gruelling encounter in Brisbane.

Prediction
Even without star backs Sam Tomkins, Konrad Hurrell and Glen Fisiiahi, the young Warriors show no sign of slowing down.

Warriors by 10.

if the Broncos are as good as you make out, then they wouldn't need the refs on their side

I can't believe more people aren't blowing up about that penalty. No one can even give an exact reason why it was given. The ball had been passed by the dummy half and it was play on. Normally they are more lenient in that situation as well but that is one of the worst I've seen while the scores are locked up with minutes to play. And it totally ruined the game. I was filthy and I picked the Broncos.

better be a bit careful there, libel and slander rules can apply to social media. Call him incompetent but don't accuse him of corruption unless you've got evidence. You won't be able to hide behind a secret email user name if they want to get to you.

The penalty was because the Warriors player pushed the guy playing the ball out of the way so he could slap at McCoullough passing out of dummy half. Wasn't much in it but it was an understandable penalty. The Warriors player should be blamed for his own stupidity in doing something that can be penalised. The reasoning for the final try was that Kodi Nikorima knocked back and that McCoullough grounded the ball first. Fair enough. The Wallace try could've gone either way. If the ref sent it up as a try its a try, he sends it up as a no try its a no try. The Johnson no try I thought was a little harsh and there was obviously a little bit of a difference of opinion between commentators. Sterling and Johns said no try while Gilbert and Lewis said try. I thought looking at the replay it was a no try but there probably wasn't enough evidence that it did in fact touch Milford to overturn the onfield ref. however how can you look at that replay and say it didn't touch Milford at some point? Grey area that one.

Wallace was 50/50. McCullough's was 100%. What was wrong with it? They all had air swings and Andrew got to the final one milliseconds before whoever it was.

I guess it depends if you want consistency or not, I agree that neither were penalties but once one has been given surely you have to penalize the other. I think two refs causes confusion at the ruck, sometimes it seems like both refs are waiting for the other to make the call. It's made worse by players from all teams stretching the rules as far as they can.

As per usual; the NRL and the Refs looked after the Broncos and helped them to get their win. Hey Refs, its not a Friday nights broncos game, that penalty right near the end was poor taste from the ref. Also 2 forward passes in one play to score in the corner. Different matches, different rules for 8 matches in 1 round. Lesser forward passes get pulled back but a blatant forward pass by Milford right in front of Cecchin. Mate are you blind? I don't think so, i think you are still punting mate. Even the refs on Friday night let Parramatta control the ruck, thats why Souths could not win that match. It was ridiculous. Come on NRL, Do you really think Us as fans are that blind that we really cant see this. That was a different incompetent Ref though not Cecchin.

Brisbane were given a penalty in front of the posts at 16-16 with two minutes to go because Corey Parker dropped the ball, Cecchin thought there was a rake involved. Video referees were appalling also, Wallace and McCullough tries should not have been awarded however, they had no reason to go against the original decision nor did they have any reason to go with it. Both tries should have been disallowed.

It was a stupid decision by Cecchin. He must have had a punt on the Broncs. To quote Geoff Toovey, "This is ridiculous. Surely someone's go to be held accountable, this is ridiculous."

Both Ben Hunt and Shaun Johnson's kicking was outstanding. Jordan Kahu was outstanding under the high ball. I am curious to see what Kahu's future is like at the Broncos and whether Hunt will be able to pull on another Kangaroos jersey.

Shouldn't have been a penalty for either. Maranta barely touched him and was going for the ball. Likewise the other one but you don't fix a mistake by making another. My biggest issue with referees at the moment is the ruck interpretation. The penalties they blow seem to be completely at random. You never get a replay and they are never explained. Slow play the ball penalties have become a joke and seemingly a tool for the referee to control the game beyond what is reasonable. I would love to see a study of average play the balls versus penalised play the balls. Some instances the tackler lies in the way for ages and nothing, other times he rolls away and is penalised.

I'm not questioning the ruling on the restart, I get how they arrived at the drop out decision. My point was that the Bodene Thompson was penalised for pushing Jack Reed while chasing a grubber into the in-goal earlier in the game yet Maranta shoved Vatuvei in the back while trying to get to the grubber in exactly the same situation yet wasn't penalised. I accept it was a soft penalty against Thompson but it should also have been a Warriors penalty to restart from the Maranta no try for the sake of consistency.

Warriors completed 9 sets against Broncos 20 in the 1st half. That's school boy stuff from the Warriors. Gotta say the young fellas had a shocker dropping the pill, Lolohea, Lisone, Kata and Vete although I don't think Vete lost his ball that was just another wild weird call from the ref. Warriors are now missing the much improved Tomkin and Hurrell and Laumape. Warriors really have to wake up and smell the coffee when you've got a pretty good forward pack you should be winning games not handing them to the opposition. The penalty for not marking square was a shocker which along with all the other mistakes cost the Warriors the game. The Broncos appear to be a side which can just beat a side playing average footy. How's the video refs, are they drinkin or using the phone a friend option?

Air swing after air swing. Much like the rest of the game it was a comedy of errors (tragedy of errors, maybe if you are from across the dutch)

Some of Hunt's kicks were amazing. It has become a real weapon for the Broncos.

Read the rule book. The Maranta no try/line drop out was silly but it is in the rules. Because Maranta's foot was out he is deemed as being part of the touchline. Like a kick off when a player puts a foot out to catch. That advantage wasn't great but they had one before that where they scooted 30 metres up the field and dropped the ball and it was called no advantage, so swings and roundabouts for that one. The Wallace try was hard to tell. First thought was no way, but the more I looked, the possibility grew. Couldn't be overturned and it was more a case of silly rules than poor refereeing. Having to go the video ref for that one and also the Oates no try was poor. There were a few iffy calls and Broncs definitely had the rub of the green but the Warriors were so poor for all but about 20 minutes.

Slight exaggeration there, Broncos in the second half were as poor as the Warriors were in the first, they just managed to fall over the line. Key difference was Ben Hunts long kicking game, over the full 80 minutes there wasn't much else in it.

Dirty scheme? Good joke, I've seen the Warriors do the same thing pretty much every time they are leading in a close game with the clock winding down.

Fair try, ball went backwards, McCullough grounded it first. Try everyday of the week. Don't why everyone is complaining about it, people need to learn the rules before commenting.

There were about 5 Broncos players that played better than Townsend did. Man of the match was Parker for sure.
