Cheap Seats 68: Thirsty champions

By The Cheap Seats Podcast / Roar Guru

Sportswriters Brett McKay and Ryan O’Connell are shaking off their World Cup hangovers in Episode 68 of the Cheap Seats podcast.

The Cricket World Cup is finally over, with Australia’s thumping win over New Zealand in the Final on Sunday. The boys wrap it all up, including where it was won and lost, Michael Clarke’s well-timed retirement from ODIs, send-offs, and whether anyone will be joining Pup.

Meanwhile, in Super Rugby, the Waratahs won, we put the mockers on the Crusaders, and the New Zealand conference is looking ominously strong.

In the NRL, the Roosters were rocked by injury, the first Origin discussion is had, and the state of refereeing is sliced and diced.

The AFL starts this week, but positive drug tests aren’t exactly what they had in mind.

Another big #AskTheCheapSeats includes questions on Super Rugby play and the state of the Western Force, Shane Warne’s “thirsty” work with the mic after the World Cup final, and the MCG size debate.

Don’t forget, you can still join the Cheap Seats Tipping League. Beating these two isn’t difficult, and the AFL leg starts this Thursday.

Get us on Twitter at @CheapSeatsPod and get your questions in for next week using the tag #AskTheCheapSeats. And stay cheap!

I forgot to put in my tip for the CWC Final didn't I? Dammit, I can't believe I gave up that one point (and a perfect knockout tipping record) to Brett.

Is that the 'playing mind games' palarva? Worked on Warner to be fair. ;)

Yes Digger, whatever the outcome of the final at least we put to bed the ridiculous theory about how important the size of the ground is. The matches in Auckland and Melbourne proved beyond doubt that cricket matches are won between the stumps. Thanks guys, good chat as always.

I'm aware it doesn't matter where he ends up after the initial landing of the foot, my point was that the umpire may be inclined to second guess their initial decision because of where he ends up (in the sense of "did he really slide that far or was I seeing things").

But the slide doesn't matter, Alex, only that part of the front foot lands behind the line. And surely an umpire can see half a foot landing behind the line!

One of the ironies of the #MCGsobig was that it was only Warner caught in the deep during the match. Carry on chaps, great show.

Having two Alex's in the cheap seats tipping league made it too confusing. Luke's statue should get melted down into a ball and chain for the Reds to drag around until they get their act together. My theory on the Bulls is that they took a little while to play themselves into the season, those touch ups early fired them up too -- round 3 against the Sharks you could tell they were desperate not to lose a third in a row at Loftus. Just on the no ball check with Faulkner, his front foot slides a seriously long way when he bowls, I can understand umpires second guessing their initial call because even if his whole foot landed behind the crease very little of it would remain there by the time he's done sliding along the ground.
