Perth Glory barred from 2015 A-League finals

By The Roar / Editor

Perth Glory will miss the 2015 A-League finals following news emerging earlier this month that they had breached their salary cap.

Glory currently sit in second place on the A-League ladder, but on equal points to the top placed Melbourne Victory, meaning their place in the 2015 series, beginning on May 1st, was all but guaranteed.

In light of the decision today, their final ladder position for the 2014/15 season will be recorded as seventh.

With a final position of seventh guaranteed, Perth are out of the running for a place in the 2016 Asian Champions League.

On top of this, the club is also set to be fined a total of $269,000 for the salary cap breaches that spanned across three seasons.

Perth are able to lodge an appeal against the decision and have the next seven days to do so.

The news of their dismissal from the finals broke on social media on Friday afternoon:

Football Federation Australia then released the following statement in regards to the decision:

Football Federation Australia (FFA) has determined that Perth Glory Football Club will be excluded from the 2015 A-League Finals Series after being found to be in breach of the Hyundai A-League’s Player Contract Regulations (‘salary cap’).

At the end of Round 27 the Club’s position on the ladder will be adjusted and recorded as seventh.

The sanction follows the determination that Perth Glory has deliberately failed to disclose reportable benefits and payments to at least six players, and from the beginning of the 2014/15 season has been operating in excess of the allowable salary cap of $2.55m by in the order of $400,000.

FFA has also determined that the Club was in breach of the rules for failing to disclose payments in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons.

Perth Glory will be fined $269,000 in total for the breaches over the three seasons as follows:
* $26,000 for the 2012/13 season, being the value of the undisclosed payments and benefits
* $43,000 for the 2013/14 season, being the value of the undisclosed payments and benefits
* $200,000 for the 2014/15 season, taking into account the significance of the total sanction for this season, namely the exclusion from the Finals series (and consequently any prospect of qualifying for the 2016 Asian Champions League)

The breaches include deliberately not disclosing:
* Payments outside of the Standard Player Contract
* Payments to a player’s family member
* Payments of player agents’ fees
* A Third Party sponsorship
* A Pre-payment to a player
* Payment of travel costs
* Accommodation benefits
* Provision of motor vehicles

Perth Glory has seven business (7) days in which to lodge an appeal under the FFA’s regulations to the independent FFA Disciplinary Committee.

In response to the FFA’s decision, Perth Glory issued the following Tweet:

The Glory are set to host Sydney FC in Perth tonight, before matches against Melbourne City and the Western Sydney Wanderers to close out their season.

My comment was really a bit "tongue in cheek",but it is pretty much the immediate "gut reaction" of many Glory followers,just as the gut reaction of many on this forum to talk about expansion is "Let's have more NSW teams"! Rightly or wrongly,WA has come to expect to be screwed over by the "Wise Men from the East". Where Glory & the "A" League goes from here is up in the air. If enough people are disenchanted with the game,& Glory becomes defunct,you no longer have a National competition.

Ozzie Rules - A number of things have happened to Brisbane Roar this year that may have disheartened fans somewhat. If you are so learned you will know what these things are. Along with some atrocious weather and two Friday and Saturday night games against WSW - last December and MV - in February that have been rescheduled to midweek after other said things have happened during the season. The WSW crowd alone was about 7000 down on what we would have got and I'm not expecting more for Wednesday's clash with MV.As pointed out the drop in attendance is not "in droves" at all. As for droves you yet again have ignored the stats of crowd averages when Brisbane were not winning trophies when Brisbane has half or less than half the population of Sydney and Melbourne. I see now you are a MV fan. That says enough for me. You can believe what you like. When AAMI Park is consistently full and we aren't hearing about 5000 corporate seats being taken up supposedly and less people turning up consistently than there are members, and your per capita crowds are better - please then come back and lecture everybody how great you are. But I have a feeling MV fans will anyway. You are the Manchester United apparently of Australia.

SVB - I don't know where you are sourcing your information from but you are either not comparin apples with apples or our sources are way out in their dats content As of last night WSW were averaging a home gate of 13,050.That was after 12 home games.Last season at the same time,(12 home games) they were averaging 11,594 so in my book that is an increase of 1456 per game. Doing the same exercise for Roar shows that of last night their average crowd over 10 home games is standing at 12,067 compared with their last season'e figure (over 10 home games was 13,294 a decrease of 1227,hardly earth shattering when one consider the timing of their game to a mid-week schedule. jb

Surely you're not saying the vast majority of Melbournians aren't intelligent?

Ha ha. Inferiority complex. I'm just sick of constantly hearing about how everything should be down in Melbourne. You base your whole lives down there on being some kind of 'sporting capital'. Just about every other city in the world couldn't care less about that title. I'm not defending AZ. Just giving my point of view. You are way too sensitive.

That was when your average was 24k and 26k the previous seasons. Then it went down to 20k, and then 15k the season after that. If anyone's average fluctuates the most it is MV. That would therefore easily make you the biggest abandoners. A bandwagon of AFL supporters is what you have who then abandon in droves once the goals dry up. Also note that in that first season there was a sense of goodwill within the league, and most people were happy just to have a league. Therefore people turned up regardless. If you came in that position in the 3rd or 4th season then it would have been different. Also you weren't consistently on the bottom of the table that season. You did end up second last (out of 8 clubs), but for a lot of the season you were playing exciting football including beating Sydney FC 5-0. Your club doesn't what a season in hell is yet! P.S - I do notice you have a posting style similar to another poster. Pretty obvious to spot really.

I just wonder if Freo were in a similar situation to Perth Glory wouldn't the local media and sports supporters in general rally around the Club ?, but with Perth Glory the local media and community want to disown them ,that's unfair that's selective choosing ......

"MV fans abandoned the team when Magilton and Durakovic were coach." Gosh you're funny. When Durakovic and Magilton were the coach, MV's season average crowd was 20.3k which is a higher season average than any team - other than MVFC - has ever managed to achieve in the ALeague. In the 1st season of ALeague (maybe you weren't watching in those days) MV finished 2nd bottom & the worst Australian based team. Our season average was 14.2k, playing at Olympic Park where the stadium capacity is less than Parrramatta Stadium. :-)

MV fans abandoned the team when Magilton and Durakovic were coach. That was also when you were in contention for top 6. WSW average has gone down by about 2,000 from last season. From second to last position. That's hardly abandoning a team. Would like to see how MV would go if they spent a whole year on the bottom of the ladder. You have never been there so you really can't talk. Something tells me MV fans think they are a special breed. Never cared about you much before, but disliking you more and more all the time.

Nonsense about TV ratings and crowds. TV viewing this season: Total viewing audience for ALeague record high Crowds: slightly below last season, which was the record high for ALeague since the competition expanded from the original 8 teams. In particular, AdelUtd, MelbCity, MVFC, Perth and NIX (i.e. 50% of the competition) are higher than last season and AU, Melb City and Perth average season crowds are at record highs never achieved by them before in A-League. MVFC's crowd this season is the highest it's ever been since the competition expanded beyond 8 teams - i.e. more people watched MVFC at home this season than in the history of ALeague. Whilst I can understand CCM and Jets who have had massive problems in back-office and on the field have crowds down 21% and 24% respectively. I cannot understand why the current Asian Champions & ALeague champions have dropped 16% & 19% on last season respectively. It's very sad that so many fans from Wanderers & Roar have abandoned their teams as soon as they're not near the top of the table.

It has been a poor for season the a-league in terms of statistics. Ratings and crowds have all gone down. Now a salary cap scandal. What do you want people to lie about it just so you can feel better about your team?

Yeah good one SVB. AZ's comment was "This season showed so much promise but EVERYTHING has been downhill since Asian Cup." Everything? Aside from an overly pessimistic pov, it sounds like a massive sweeping generalisation if you ask me. Can u deny that? Just because you feel the need to defend your fellow wsw fan, you shouldn't allow that to hinder your logic. Besides you have already shown your huge inferiority complex about Melbourne the other day whinging about how we "even took the Grand Prix of Adelaide" or some nonsense. He also said " Usually don’t care much for results not involving WSW" Is that why he gives us his unwelcomed weekly predictions on the HAL. He picked the nix over victory last week btw. Go hold hands with AZ and sing your annoying repetitive chants.

Really has nothing to do with that. Whether WSW had a bad season or not, the fact is that the league has a bad season in terms of average attendance, television ratings and general publicity. That affects the whole league.. Get out of your little MV bubble and you might notice that. Nobody is going to discredit whoever wins the league.

Ian My opening comment on this issue was specifically: The only fans who have been crying “poor season” are from Wanderers and Brisbane. If you can find something about that comment that is incorrect, please point it out. There is a big difference between: 1. All people complaining "poor season" are fans of Roar and WSW; and 2. All Roar & WSW fans are complaining "poor season" I said (1); I did not say (2).

Is this pouting conversation still going? You have extrapolated data from a couple of posts and spread it across entire fan bases so you win an internet point. I also pointed out you were incorrect about fans not being solid for Brisbane Roar in the years when there were no trophies based on crowd stats.
