Perth Glory CEO Jason Brewer resigns over salary cap drama

By News / Wire

Perth Glory chief executive Jason Brewer has resigned over the A-League club’s salary cap saga.

Brewer apologised for the club’s predicament, but maintained his stance that Glory were innocent.

“There have been no secret payments, no third party payments, nor do we maintain a book of shadow accounts,” Brewer said.

Brewer insists it was his decision to quit.

“I’d like to personally apologise for the series of events that have unfolded at this club over recent months,” Brewer said.

“We now face some of the darkest days in the club’s recent years as a result of the sanctions which have been put down by the FFA and also which have resulted in us being eliminated from the finals series.

“As a CEO, the responsibility of where the club lies today is with me.

“I love this club, and this club is far bigger than any individual.

“I’ve got to step back now and let someone else drive it forward.”

Glory have already been booted out of this season’s finals and fined $269,000 after being found guilty of exceeding the salary cap by in excess of $400,000.

But Football Federation Australia hit the club with more bad news on Wednesday, revealing it had allegedly uncovered another $100,000 in player payments and benefits the Glory failed to declare.

That would bring Glory more than $500,000 over this season’s $2.55-million salary cap.

FFA confirmed it would deliver the third show-cause notice to the club by no later than this Friday.

If the latest allegations are proven true, Glory could be stripped of points next season.

Perth Glory’s full statement is below:

Mr Brewer stepped into the role almost two years ago.

Until a new CEO is appointed the club will be steered by senior management.

Mr Brewer’s statement is attached below:

I would like to personally apologise for a series of events which have resulted in the club facing sanctions by the Football Federation of Australia.

As CEO I ultimately take full responsibility for these actions which have resulted in the club being eliminated from this year’s Hyundai A-League finals campaign.

The decision by the FFA to eliminate the club from the finals, in no way reflects the massive effort undertaken this year by everyone, involved with the club.

I would like to stress that I genuinely love Perth Glory FC and all those involvedwith the club.

Two years ago I stepped into the role with the belief that I could make a difference.

As a father of three, I have always wanted the best for my family and I applied the same principal to my “football” family and have at all times wanted the best for the club, its staff, sponsors, players, members and supporters.

There has been much media speculation regarding the club’s salary cap position.

Like every A-League club, we manage it throughout the season and it must be made very clear that this club has made each and every payment through its own records.

There have been no so called “secret” or “third party” payments made on behalf of the club.

As I said, as CEO of the club, the ultimate responsibility rests with me and for this reason I must take full and total responsibility.

It is therefore, in the best interests of the club, I announce that from today I am resigning as CEO of Perth Glory…with immediate effect and before the outcome of the appeal process is reached.

I unreservedly apologise to the staff, sponsors, members, fans and players of Perth Glory for the position in which the club finds itself in.

Perth Glory is a great club, with a great tradition – it has world class fans, quality players and quality staff… And they should all be supported in moving forward.

This Sunday marks the last home game of the season for Perth Glory FC

I would like to urge all the members and fans to flock to nib Stadium and give the boys and Kenny Lowe the send off they all deserve.

Jason Brewer

Why FFA has any connection with any betting company? Has any betting company extorted or blackmailed FFA? Or, has any FFA's senior member or employee got a share, partnership or a connection in any betting company? Or, has any Perth Glory's senior member or employee got a share, partnership or a connection in any betting company? Gambling is always bad. So, next time FFA is issuing a franchising license to any club, FFA has to check the owner's background also.

It's reported the breach is around $400-500k. Whilst I've no idea about player wages, I'd guess Garcia, Zadkovic and Sidnei would earn close to that. If they're moved on and replaced by 3 kids on minimum wage you'd be close to getting under the cap with minimal impact on the team that has been very successful this season. Plus Hersi will be back next season to bolster the attack.

Perth Glory have fully accepted guilt over the Salary Cap breach. Time for everyone to move on. That means it's 'case closed', and the club can start fresh again next year. http://www.watoday.com.au/sport/soccer/perth-glory/perth-glory-admit-guilt-over-aleague-salary-cap-rorts-20150416-1mmvm0.html

Wow it has come to this. I did say a few posts ago that Sage had to do something new or risk losing fans for a long time. Even that is quite beyond Sage now.

Nobody, the FFA certainly won't because it's in the too hard basket and quite frankly they could not give two sh!ts about Perth Glory. Quite incredible they have not taken Sages license away they were threatening to do so to Tinkler over a lot less. The guy has brought the game into disrepute and a club to it's knees but like i said they can't be bothered fixing it and Sage knows he's safe because not having a club in Perth would be a bad look for the A-League.

Agree, that would be mad, docking points for next season. That would impact attendances, the ability to sign/ re-sign players...ultimately the financial well being of the club (which hurts the A-League as a whole). Punish them for this season (wooden spoon?), and fine them....don't drag it out into next season.
