Victory put one hand on A-League title

By Vince Rugari / Wire

The Premier’s Plate is Melbourne Victory’s to lose after moving three points clear on top of the A-League ladder with Wednesday night’s 2-1 win over Brisbane.

With two rounds remaining, Victory have finally eked out some breathing space at the summit of the table after goals from Carl Valeri and Besart Berisha sealed the result in front of 10,642 fans at Suncorp Stadium.

Kevin Muscat’s men face the Roar again on Saturday night at the same venue and, with a superior goal difference over their title rivals, another win would all but seal the club’s fifth piece of major silverware – and a berth in the 2016 Asian Champions League.

Even without injured star Gui Finkler, the visitors were at their lethal best in attack and cut a lacklustre Brisbane outfit to pieces in a dominant first half.

Valeri opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a stunning low drive from 20 metres out that sizzled past the outstretched glove of Jamie Young.

Then five minutes later, Berisha marked his first appearance at Suncorp Stadium since moving to Melbourne in the best way possible.

Timing his run to perfection, he ghosted past the Roar’s rearguard to chest down a ball from the lively Fahid Ben Khalfallah, then lashed at it with his left foot to send it through Young’s legs and into the back of the net.

As promised, Berisha’s celebration against his former club was understated – but there was no denying what the goal meant for the striker and for the small contingent of travelling Victory fans nearby, who were sent into raptures.

Another ex-Brisbane player, Kosta Barbarouses, had the chance to make it 3-0 just minutes after the halftime break but the Kiwi’s attempt thudded into the left upright.

The home side, who suffered a pre-match blow when ace youngster Brandon Borrello injured his knee in the warm-up, enjoyed plenty of possession but were unable to make anything of it until Matt McKay’s goal in the 51st minute sparked them into action.
McKay was released into the box following a lovely one-two with Andrija Kaluderovic, although replays indicated the Serbian marksman was marginally offside at the time.

Brisbane’s captain made no mistake with his finish but the Victory proved hard to break down beyond that point and never looked likely to give up another goal.

I'll wear that jb..guilty as charged. Very true, never speak to soon. And yes "perceived" ref errors haha... Like Janko's offside goal against us and ryals sniper in the stands pen (that got international coverage on espn) Basically costing us 4 points right there that would've come in handy about now., I wish I was making this stuff up.. Anyway I think it's safe to say delovski won't be officiating our last two games. At least I hope he's not!

Horto - Who is it that has colour tinted glasses? Yours appear to be deeply blue and white. Great news anyway, despite the comments from those knowledgeable commentators re. Sydney increasing the goal difference after the third goal in 8 minutes they had to thank their goalkeeper for getting them 3 points by games' end. Such is football, where fate can "turn on a sixpence" so to speak,------or perhaps on a perceived bad refereeing decision, yes? no? Cheers jb

Yeah bondy that's what worries me. Underestimate him at your peril. Hes been there and done it before and musky hasn't as a gaffer.. He's already started the mind games too.. Hopefully they're getting to musky less than they're getting to me atm. And just as I suspected Sydney put 4 goals away last night..albeit only bumping up their GD by a goal due to a great performance by the jets.

Yes I did and joking aside I would guess there's a pattern in there, Berishas pedigree is better then Kaluderovic and Kurtishis is next to zero unless I've got my understanding of European clubs wrong (?) but Berisha's record isn't really that good until he arrives in Brisbane

Jb What I'm saying is picking the bones out of roars defeat isn't the top of my priorities right now..as it is yours. I'm more focused on how MV is performing and yet more bad ref karma. Clearly u don't find that a priority. You obviously know GD can determine a premier..I wouldn't put it past sydney to thump jets by 4 or more goals tonight.. It's not out of the realms of possibility.. They did beat nix & glory 3-0 respectively in their last 2 games..and with the table so tight and this close to the pointy end, one more of these rookie mistakes, (illegal goals, dubious penalties)etc could cost us the season. (That is if we're not the architects of our own demise..) Id wish u luck for tmrw night but.. ;)

Paul - On a serious note did you note the names of some of the clubs these guys had played for? Berisha was contracted to a German top league club, and a top English club. That gave some indication of his standing. jb.

Horto - "orange tinted glasses"? I think not. If. you ask Waz or Realfootball, both avid fans of Roar, I think they would tell you I am a pretty avid critic on how I perceive Brisbane Roar being run as a professional football organisation. I would go further than that and say that age has cleared my sight completely and I can now watch any HAL game and get enjoyment from the match if I perceive the quality of the match to be of a high standard. I will admit that at times I "kill" the sound if I find I am dis-agreeing with comments being made but that is a personal "failing". I am a football fan,not a club fan,but would like to see my "local" side top of the heap again but I think that is a natural trait, not an indication of one eyed vision. Cheers jb.

jb: it's an interesting and important point, the recruitment of Kurtishi didn't serve Roar or the A League well whereas Khalfallas recruitment has served MV very well and indeed I would say has enhanced the HAL, a pattern of hit and miss for many clubs over the years not just Roar and while MV fans might sit back with a satisfied grin on their face it's not good for the HAL overall to have too many misses imported in to often. I think it's the MLS that have a centralised recruiting model for overseas players and I've always thought that would make sense over here - we need more Berisha's, Broich's, Khalfalla's and even Li Ki Ji's than we do Kurtishi's. Strong imports are good for the HAL, poor imports are bad - so why not have a centralised scouting and recruitment model for the HAL? Clubs like MCFC with an existing network can still use that as could old Musky with his mates in Europe - but if we put in a good system for identifying suitable talent the whole league benefits; heck we could even apply a visa system approach where the first year has to be served in a remote and less developed part of Australia like the Central coast, Newcastle or Western Sydney? That might help some of those clubs out at the same time ...

Wiki says: Berisha 187 games, 83 goals (10 clubs) and Kaluderovic 113 games for 45 goals (14 clubs). Remarkably similar records really which when I then compared them to mensur kurtishi he also has something similar so there's your answer .... everyone is using Wikipedia :)

I remember one bloke Mulvey was supposedly checking out in Germany was allergic to grass, turns out he retired last summer. Shame really, suncorps never had much grass on it this season, could have been a match made in heaven lol

Waz & Real - Getting off the main line of your complaints have you ever wondered where Roar source their "intelligence " from when reported, or actual signings, take place. Frans was a wonderful player at Ipswich with his fellow Dutchman Muhrens but when one cares to press a button and check out his coaching career his CV leaves a lot to be desired,no coaching at a high level for 13 years and before that 5 seasons spent at 4 clubs with no real indication of success at any of those clubs. Player wise the story is the same if not worse,A Fox commentator just happened to tell the public that our latest "Berisha replacement", Kaluderovic, had actually played at 12 teams in 12 seasons, appearing in 260 games and scoring 85 goals. Before that we had the Dutchman Nijiland who in 8 seasons had played with 6 different clubs amassiing only 12 goals in 105 games Before that the Canadian International Nakajima -Farran who to date has played at 12 clubs in 12 seasons and managed 66 goals in that time. All this is available on Wiki at a press of a button and some of the teams these guys played for are totally unrecognisable. When MM left on his supposed recruitment trip to Europe two German "international" strikers were mentioned and again a press of the button showed two individuals with lengthy careers but one in the truly veteran stage, released from his club and the other having been out of contention for a first team place for many months,in fact was not actually playing at that time.,None of them appeared,in fact the trip coughed up no one at all. Now if you and I can check out players as I have explained one would think someone in Roar's heirarchy could check the same data on their laptops. Makes you wonder?-. jb

I'm actually not sure anymore Bob. 9 games, 3 goals in open play, 2 clinical penalties, 2 assists. Not a bad start and yet are Roar fans satisfied with Kaluderovic?

Ian may I suggest a chill pill. And I should give it a rest and ignore yet another reffing blunder? Try copping as many as we have and not be vocal about it. Ok so if a MV goal was offside I'm sure you'd be taking the same "reserved" approach right? Exactly. Agreed we went out to put u physically off your game.. For once we weren't on the receiving end of such tactics.. It sucks doesn't it., MV knows this as karfallah is the most fouled player in the HAL. Anyway if you can't objectively see that Beath wasn't consistent in calling fouls/dishing cards then you're as blind as the linesman lol how roar copped their 1st yellow in the 90th minute or whatever it was, I'll never know. And geria gets an unintentional handball but the roar defender doesn't when he tried that back heel clearance in the box. Yes very consistent. Btw I never said we dominated the entire game.. Me biting my fingernails doesn't sound like resounding confidence does it.. After coming out of the blocks on fire we were solid enough to grind out the result in the embers... And it was Archie who proclaimed that naff Man U reference.. Not the club perse.. Archie should let his feet do the talking. He's much more fluent in foot. Or foot in mouth to be exact. Have u seen his twitter. Love the guy to bits but he can talk some sheet.

Jb A mostly balanced and accurate account of what transpired albeit through orange colored glasses.... True roar are a decimated side on many levels and this poor FFA scheduling is also a major contributing issue here...Brisbane've been unnecessarily run into the ground as have wsw... Even at that rate, you're right, MV almost looked like they'd drop their lead in the 2nd half..and we did some unpretty winning in the end. I do agree about a champion performing for the full 90mins, I'm under no illusions..hence my lack of confidence going into the last 2 games.. MV with the squad they have are the consummate underperformers.. Far too inconsistent and you never know which MV is gonna show up on the day. In the end it was the sheer class of bes that won the day. (Yes Brisbane fans you can now argue for or against the cap at will) And to be fair, I didn't only criticise the officials..that being said, you shouldn't diminish it or ignore it either because it didn't happen to u and/or didn't ultimately cost MV the game ..this is no minor issue. They failed to do their job AGAIN. Simple. As UJ points out there was little doubt as the player was in a stationary position. It's just not acceptable this many times at this level., it's cost us too many points this season.. If berishas goal was offside can you imagine the meltdown that would've ensued here this morning??? Credit to the roar who performed under some pretty big obstacles.. We did rest our playmaker and arguably the best #10 in the league though.. Anyway I went lightly on the refs in my 1st post but since u drew more attention to them..

Fussball A shock result there by Porto that's pretty much eliminated the fav's for the tournament, also Porto is the highest churner of players through their Club onto "supposedly" better Clubs or nobody makes money like Porto can off a player ... Barcelona would now have to be fav's I feel Atheltico can advance as well .. ____________________ Mid That playing group of GA's was very good at CCMFC ...
