NRL Round 7: What tickled my fancy

By The lazy Phoenix / Roar Pro

Round 7 of the NRL continued to give up its little oddities. Here is what tickled my fancy last week.

1. Daniel Vidot had one of those days. He scored a try, let the opposition score while shooing the ball over the dead ball line and bombed another. Luckily, it didn’t cost the Broncos too much – just the match.

2. What is worse than a Pyrrhic victory? Brisbane will tell you it is a Pyrrhic loss. The Broncos lost Justin Hodges and Alex Glenn during the match, and were beaten in a match they really should have won.

3. Manly are struggling, and the surest sign of trouble is when blokes pull out just before kick-off. This has been happening a lot this year.

4. Congratulations to Helen Keller on her appointment to the video referees box in the Bulldogs-Manly game.

5. Are the Dogs the worst last-tackle team in the competition? They are certainly contenders.

6. The Bulldogs have certainly had some unusual incidents in the last few weeks – the eight-point try, the field goal penalty and the crossbar rebound try. Next week I expect a gridiron pass from one sideline to the other for a try.

7. I am not sure what the lunar charts are saying but there were two full moons and a half moon on the weekend. Congratulations, Josh Mansour and James Tedesco. Aaron Woods also showed the audience his groovy tiger stripe undies as well.

8. Quote of the week goes to Brett Kimmorley: “the more I watch the replay, the scarier I get”.

9. Player of the week goes to Lachlan Coote. He produced two magnificent kick-offs over the dead ball line on the full, then proceeded to play a blinder to help beat the Warriors.

10. I notice Cooper Cronk was hit in the air after his field goal against the Roosters. I am still waiting for the penalty ten metres out in front.

11. Memo Braith Anasta: Michael Vaughan was the captain of England’s cricket team, not a Raiders bench forward.

12. Ray Warren actually called the referee Adam Dev-shits. I know because I replayed it to check.

13. Sunday was a strange day for footy. Both home teams scorched away early and wilted their way to an unexpected loss.

14. The Sharks versus Bunnies match took me back to the olden days when we would play in ankle deep puddles in the Under-10s.

15. The Sharks were magnificent in the second half, swimming against the tide to hold Souths to one try, and win the match.

You’ve gotta love the footy!

9. Was it Lachlan who messed up a kick-off catch and patted it out? Three mega cockups in a few minutes and he didn't let it get to him.

I agree about the incosistency. To be fair, I think there would only be controversy about it had the Roosters succeeded in winning the match or taking it into golden point. Would it have been given if the kick missed?

Hi Morfs, I don't think it deserved a penalty, but just shows how inconsistent things can be when they come down hard on an exotic rule.

Point 12: I thought he called him 'Deadshit'. I loved how he quickly corrected himself. Missed the next several minutes of the match because I was laughing too hard. Point 13: Sunday was the only day where the away teams won this round. Interesting tidbit. Re: 10 - I was at the game, and am a Storm supporter. Was too busy cheering to notice Cronk get taken out. Disappointed that we didn't get an additional penalty right in front now. Would have sealed the match as Cam Smith would have taken his time.
