Could Tarek Elrich's goal for Adelaide be Puskas worthy?

By The Roar / Editor

Tarek Elrich’s stunning run during Adelaide United’s 4-1 win against Melbourne City on Saturday night earned praise from football fans the world over.

The question now becomes whether or not the incredible individual effort could earn Elrich a nomination for FIFA’s Puskas Award – a prize awarded to the player who scores the ‘most beautiful’ goal of the year.

>> Watch the goal above and tell us whether you think Elrich’s goal is worthy.

If nominated, Elrich would become just the second Australian to earn a nomination for the award, after Tim Cahill was nominated for his powerful equaliser against the Netherlands at the 2014 World Cup.

He would also be the first player to be nominated for a goal scored in the A-League.

It's a good goal, but more of a gut busting run with a beautiful finish than a series of moves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ43XbTFhYc

Yep. Love the man, love the goal but Nicky has to put in the same class and by memory it was a longer run and a last gasp winner as well.

Nick Carle scored an equally impressive goal for the Jets back in the day vs Adelaide.

Hope it gets nominated. As a neutral watching - by the time he had beat the 3rd player or so and gone 50m i was egging him on to finish it himself. Well done.

Punter - Could suggest you look up some "home grown" talent built along the same lines,,Jimmy Johnstone (Celtic) and Willie Henderson (Rangers) in their heyday when both were just in their teens.A peek at You Tube you would enjoy I'm sure. Cheers jb

Another off the cuff comment, but Garrincha rated by many in Brazil as their best ever, died a penniless drunk, Best, rated by many as Europe's finest, died a hopeless drunk, Maradona, rated by many as the world's best is a total crazy person. Messi has yet to retire but seems quite normal compared to the other 3. Only saw Garrincha on film, but WOW, only caught the end of Best's career, but he had it all, saw most of Maradona's career & he is the best I have seen, Messi, may end of the best ever. Flawed geniuses. Great goal by Tarek, don't think he will reach the heights of those aforementioned onfield, hopefully he has more success after retirement.

Strictly an off the cuff comment, but I can't help wonder about the name of this award and comparing it to Tarek's wonderful effort. Ferenc Puskas, nicknamed the Galloping Major, was a prolific goalscorer with the great Hungarian team of the 1950's but those of us who had the good fortune to see him play would know that his forte in scoring goals was his ferocious shooting power usually from around the penalty box areas feeding on passes from other wonderful players that surrounded him.Always suspected of being a little overweight he was not the best "mover" on the field but his positional sense and cannon like left foot had to be seen to be believed. That brings us to Tarek's goal which was more reminiscent of an effort from Garrincha, Best, Maradonna ,or Lionel Messi at their best and to group him with these players is praise indeed for they are players who had, or have, it all. Cheers Tarek and I hope your nomination is successfull. jb.

Anybody who has run the length of a football pitch with the ball on a string will not only admire the skill ,but also the physical effort required. Well done Tarek.

This is an example of how you never give up in life. Down and out after WSW. Tarek is a real role model.

a mate of mine who is well schooled in these areas pointed out that it was very reminiscent of this one from Ryan Giggs from quite some time back (vs Arsenal - FA Cup Semi-Final Replay 1999) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quI_LkMj4HI
