Geelong are 16th and will not make the eight this season

By Peter Baudinette / Roar Guru

We have seen Essendon touted as real contenders and a top four lock in. Now, the Giants are a finals hopeful.

And it’s only Round 4.

In keeping with the trend of crazy calls and big statements, I thought I would chip in with this doozy.

Geelong are 16th after four rounds.

Looking back through the history books, this has never happened. Geelong have never, ever, been 16th after Round 4. They were 13th in 2004, 14th in 2003, and 14th back in 1998. However, this club – which has enjoyed so much success in the last eight years – has never been 16th at the end of Round 4. Amazing.

We can put it down to a series of weird anomilies but at the end of the day it comes down to one thing – they simply haven’t won that many games. And should they happen to lose this week, they could fall below 16th, a feat they have never achieved!

With Gold Coast meeting Brisbane this weekend, a loss for the Cats will result in Geelong joining one of those other two, split only by percentage.

The last time the Cats were on the bottom of the ladder after round 5 was in 2003, and they remained there until the end of Round 9. You have to go back to 1986 for the last time they were on the bottom after five rounds, back when there were only 12 teams in the competition.

Now for the groundbreaking statistic. On both those occasions when they were on the bottom after round 5, they finished ninth in 1986 and 12th in 2003.

Based on this, Geelong will not make the eight this year.

Cats could win the spoon you silly , silly people. They haven't left Victoria yet and JUST played 3 in a row at SS 1-3 at 70% is a JOKE. If they lose next 2,BOTTOM 4 !! AS I have them losing 9 MINIMUM between Rounds 7 and 19

haha, funny The sarcasm was certainly lost on these two ^^^^^ Might point out Pete, that they can't actually finish bottom after this round as the other two are winless ;-) But I see where you are going with this. So many outrageous articles over the last few weeks when it is so early on in the season.

If I had a dollar for every "Guru" (definition: talks a lot knows little) I would be a millionaire. I will keep the faith. Geelong doomsayers are a dime a dozen, it is as if they take great delight in hoping Geelong will be banished to the nether regions of the ladder. This article based on those statistics is laughable. Geelong has done more with lesser picks than any team in the competition and is one of the better run clubs. The class of people like Stephen Wells Chris Scott and on the field led by the most courageous captain in the competition. Yes I maybe biased after supporting Geelong for over 50 years. If you want stats look at winning streaks high scores etc I think you will find Geelong there more often than not. I am reminded of the three degrees of falsehoods. First is Fibs, second is lies and third ist statistics

How about Sydney finishing top after starting 1-3 last year? You can twist stats anyway you want them, but really I think some actual analysis is needed when making statements, something this article greatly lacks, just looks like someone taking pleasure in what appears the inevitable end to a great run
