2015 State of Origin: Queensland wins Game 1 11-10 [HIGHLIGHTS]

By The Roar / Editor

The Queensland Maroons have won Game 1 of the 2015 State of Origin series, defeating the New South Wales Blues by the score of 11-10

In the end, it took the experience of half Cooper Cronk to ice the game for the Maroons, snapping a crucial field goal in the 74th minute to win the match for his state.

STATE OF ORIGIN LIVE SCORES – GAME 3

Queensland won the toss and elected to kick off, giving NSW first opportunity with the ball in hand. Aaron Woods took the first hitup of the game.

Billy Slater thought he had scored the first try for Queensland off a Johnathan Thurston kick. It was to be denied by the video referee, however, for a push in the back from Slater on Blues half Trent Hodkinson.

They wouldn’t be denied a few minutes later, however, with Cooper Cronk crossing in the 14th minute. Johnathan Thurston was successful with the subsequent conversion attempt, and Queensland took an early 6-0 lead.

The Blues would have the better of the rest of the first half, however, with tries to Josh Morris and Beau Scott.

The try to Morris will go down as a great Origin moment, with James Tamou offloading for Josh Dugan who kicked ahead for the flying centre. He beat Darius Boyd in a footrace to give the Blues their first points of the match.

Beau Scott’s try was more straight forward, but just as important, and Hodkinson was successful with the conversion to give the Blues a 10-6 lead at half time.

The Maroons missed a golden opportunity early in the first half, after Greg Inglis failed to throw an accurate pass to fellow Origin try scoring leader Darius Boyd.

Trading blows would be the order of the second half, with the referees setting a generous 10 metres, allowing both teams to throw the ball around.

It would be Queensland who would break the see-sawing battle, with a well-worked play giving the Maroons the chance to take the lead. Winger Will Chambers claimed the try in the corner, but the kick was unsuccessful from Thurston, and the score was locked up with 25 minutes on the clock.

A grandstand finish was in the works.

Three line dropouts in a row saw the Blues’ defence under all sorts of pressure, but clever interchange from coach Laurie Daley saw New South Wales able to hold on.

The match didn’t disappoint. Both team had opportunities to close out the match, but it was down to experience that won the day for the Maroons.

Capitalising on a poor set from NSW close to the line, Queensland got seven tackles from a 20 metre tap. Cooper Cronk got himself into position, and knocked over a field goal from 30 metres out.

With seven minutes on the clock, there was time for NSW to even things up or steal the match.

But it wasn’t to be. Poor organisation on an attacking set saw Josh Dugan receive the ball on their last opportunity to grab a draw, and his field goal attempt sailed wide.

NSW was very lucky to only lose by 1 point as the maroons dominated the second half. Apart from duggan none of the NSW players played that well

Where were the halves? Well primarily not getting the ball because neither forwards or backs seemed capable of holding onto the bloody thing.

Pearce, once again shows how overrated he is, such a poor kicking game . NSW lacked structure and leadership at crucial times. I bet Laurie picks Pearce again. As Einstein stated "the definition of insanity is repeating the same mistake and expecting a different outcome " The refs didn't police the ruck and lenient with their interpretation of the 10 . -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

NSW, the good... (NSW fan) Tamou - insane first half Scott - good game overall Woods - insane first half Dugan - exactly what was needed Klemmer's early second half Morris - always delivers the goods the meh... Pearce - good first half, that ball to find scott was terrific, absent second half Hopoate - should never have been picked hasn't had any real sort of form for parra tupou - good, needs to be better jennings - ok, needs better ball, should have at least put a hit of some sort on chambers merrin - didn't notice him tbh cordner - lack of significant output hoffman - not sure what happened seemed to be lacking something the bad Farah - no dynamism from dummy half, maybe the shoulder was worse than it looked, didn't seem to provide any sort of leadership hodkinson - he kicked a conversion .... not much else jackson - good tackle, on the line otherwise didn't offer anything certainly shouldn't have started ahead of merrin who's played a terrific season with the dragons fifita - was poor, not much else to say. changes ... Austin for hodkinson, his game against the dogs was terrific and his running game and defence are first class a. reynolds for pearce, although I'm not sure when he's back, will need game time at souths first. gallen to start at lock for jackson, provides leadership someone to replace hopoate either moylan, johnston or richards alternatively move morris to the wing, croker into the centres would allow an austin/pearce combo croker in somewhere ?? QLD, the good (won't do all can't be bothered tbh) Slater - terrific game, the dive onto morris' back was pointless and stupid cronk - what else do you expect smith - see above chambers - good try, solid defence on the whole Bench forwards - much better than NSW's equivalent the ok/meh Thurston - didn't seem as influential as he normally is starting pack except for myles (didn't pay much attention to them, thaiday didn't seem to make as many line breaks as he normally does) the bad myles - poor game, haven't seen many titans matches but from what I've heard his form has been down this season inglis - poor from his standards, injured? might still be sick from the weekend Boyd - he can't do much if inglis isn't playing well... Hodges - i can't even pretend to be slightly impartial, his faeces eating grin is soooooooo punchable. changes, if they could leave out cronk, smith, slater and thurston and play with 9 on the field that would be fantastic. *my bias is declared on the first line*

Agreed, foxsports gave pearce a 7! He was nowhere in second half, a typical origin performance from him. I will say though that the NSW go forward wasnt there too which made it hard but the two bombed field goal chances summed up why pearce is no general.

Were you watching a different game? Queensland should have been pinged many times for being inside the 10, billy slater perpetually in front of the kicker. the Slater try was a 50-50 call. Not arguing the result though, NSW didn't deserve to win.

Agree that Chambers was good and would have been close to MoM same as Cronk. Smith did a lot of tackling and organizing though and I thought his tackle on Pearce in the first half was a try save as well as his charge on Dugan might have saved a drop goal, and also nearly got a try so agree with his MoM.

Absolutely correct. When the forwards slacken off, you expect the halves or the captain to start geeing them up and driving them forward again. Neither Pearce, nor Hodko nor Farah do this. They don't do it for their clubs and they don't do it for their state. As a result, the forwards go nowhere and NSW will likely lose yet another origin series.

Agree that the bench did not have the impact I thought they would. QLD bench matched them. Tamou had his best origin game. Jackson was very quiet.

Come of it, NSW got favoured by the refs, that very first try to Slater should of been awarded. And NSW were inside the ten all night, but the refs managed to pick two back-to-back for the blues.
