Boorish booing of Adam Goodes must stop

By Sporting Tragic / Roar Pro

The booing of Sydney Swans star and former Australian of the Year Adam Goodes has dominated AFL coverage this week.

Rightly so, as it is an absolute disgrace.

What is baffling is why its occurring. I suspect there are multiple reasons.

Firstly, Australia simply isn’t prepared for sportspeople to speak on issues away from their sport. Time and time again, we see sportspeople being smashed for simply speaking their views on matters that aren’t necessarily to do with their chosen domain.

Can someone explain to me why David Pocock can’t have an opinion on gay marriage or environmental matters?

Goodes, in his time as Australian of the Year, had the right – no, the duty – to do exactly that. It’s the reason he was given the title, to effect change.

The sad truth is that Australians want, or expect, their sportspeople, particularly their footballers, to be oafish and when they’re not (shock, horror, they’re human beings with brains!) they get pillared for it.

Secondly – and hopefully one for the true football fans – is that Goodesy has played for free kicks on the field at various times during the last 12 months or so.

This might be the only reason for the consistent jibes directed Goodes’ way, but it still doesn’t explain the continued, repeated manner at a number of grounds. Surely 300-plus games of respect, not to mention two Brownlow medals, forgives some this?

Thirdly – unfortunately, the most plausible – is that Australia is still plagued by racism.

Is sport part of a far bigger problem underpinning our society? I’d like to think that’s it’s not, but it’s hard to escape the thought.

Finally, are people just sick of him? Has Adam Goodes, one of the genuine greats of AFL, played one season too many and thus he is suffering the wrath of the fans?

I’ll be interested to see what happens this Friday night at the SCG against Carlton.

I've also booed the auskick kids before.I figured it might toughen them up in case they made the AFL and got booed.

If a wrong is significant, laws may need to be broken. Should Gandhi have not performed his illegal march to boil salt? Should Rosa Parks have not illegally sat down at the front of the bus? ...

I wouldn't boo Adam Goodes, but neither would I presume to know why other people might boo Adam Goodes. I think those arguing that anyone who boos Goodes is a racist need to explain why those same crowds don't boo any other indigenous players. And why other indigenous greats who were vocal in their stand against racism (Winmar, Long, McLeod) weren't often booed, either. In fact in some cases (e.g. Long) they were lionised by supporters everywhere. Seriously, what's the explanation? Hundreds of indigenous men play AFL over the past few decades, yet only one gets booed. Why?

I'd have more respect for that opinion if you'd said 'people booing need to grow up' but instead it seems it's just about adam for you. some people enjoy booing. there's far worse things in life.

'WE are not a nation of racists, but there are racists among us ' - Fair enough. Always will be an idiot minority amongst us. 'WE will accept indigenous people so long as they know their place' - Even sarcastically this is racist, and starting with WE means you include youself, myself, and everyone else. This shows your prejudices as well. The equation of Goodes gets boo'ed + Goodes is aboriginal = Everyone may be racist is not accurate. A lot of people just think the guy is a d*ck*.

The ridiculous notion that Goodes is booed because he's dirty or a stager isn't any less ridiculous than it was at the start of the week when the discussion began. It's simple - people booing him need to grow up, it's pathetic and really poor for the game.

Nail - head. Go back to the back of the bus. Don't point out that we are racist. Know that evolution has led to us not you. You are part of a dying race. Yes you're a good footballer, but you're a diver, and you play for frees, and I don't like that you pointed out some poor 13 year old girl when she called you a "rock ape". Poor her! Dragged over the coals like that! Eddie got it right; you should play King Kong! And we just like the "oo" sound, like in ROOOOOOOSSSSS! Or BROOOOOOST! Get over it! We boo everybody, from every club! Just don't call me racist you PC bastards! Cause I'm not!

We are not a nation of racists, but there are racists among us and you can be sure they will join in enthusiastically whenever Goodes is booed for whatever reason. I believe the real problem for some of us is that Goodes is "uppity" -- 'Taking liberties or assuming airs beyond one's place in a social heirarchy. Assuming equality with someone higher up the social ladder.' We will accept indigenous people so long as they know their place.

"Goodesy has played for free kicks on the field at various times during the last 12 months or so". You serious, it's been going on for most of his career.

I'd say that there's a large portion of Australians who are uncomfortable with Goodes' open stance against racism. Is that racism in itself? I'm not sure, but there are people who don't want to hear the truth when it comes to the treatment of Indigenous Australians. Then there are those who have the temerity to suggest that calling Goodes an 'ape' wasn't racism. Yes, because the world needs white people telling non-white people what is or isn't racist. So why is Goodes booed? It's not purely racial, although the amount of booing for him has risen massively since he pointed the finger at the young Collingwood supporter. The real reason why Goodes is booed is because we're all a bunch of sheep. It's the same reason umpires are booed each and every game. They could have a perfect match and still be booed off the field. It's in the crowd's nature now to boo them, even though people don't know why. I fear the same is now happening to Adam Goodes.

Alright whatever, continuous boo'ing. See if its just aboriginals or not. Thats what is constantly being said here, that he is getting boo'ed because we are a nation of racists that dislike aboriginals. Or would that be be too cut and dry for the fence sitters.

Booing Anglo Saxon players = perfectly fine Booing Aboriginal players = bad! If you're serious about tackling racism -and frankly I think a lot of people defending Adam Goodes aren't, they're simply using it as a platform to push their own agendas- then you'll realize the only fair solution is to treat ALL players equally, not hold up some to be 'more equal than others'. That means the next time a caucasian guy is booed at an AFL game you better be just as outraged, otherwise who's the one really doing the discriminating?

Make a note of which players get booed continuously in every game -- there won't be too many. I don't think Goodes is booed just because he is indigenous but it is part of it.

Well it'd be also be more productive world if people were to focus more on what is important rather than the negative. As I say, it's a bit of an understatement to say that is unlikely to happen, but it is a good thing aspiring to it.

Over the next few rounds, someone make note of which players in each game get boo'ed the most. Come the end of it if we, as in the Australian footy going public, are the bigots everyone claims us to be then the names on that list should all be 'black' people. If we are boo'ing Goodes because he is aboriginal, he isnt the only aboriginal in the league.

Booing is not just a part of AFL football, it is a part of all sports an indeed it is a part of life- just ask any politician how much booing they cop. Anyone who says booing of all AFL players should stop must also explain why the AFL arena should be treated so differently from almost every other aspect of everyday life.

Why would it be a worry if they wanted booing of all players to stop? Surely it's a noble cause, even if a highly unlikely one.
