[VIDEO] Origin controversy: Inglis denied runaway try

By The Roar / Editor

The Queensland Maroons have been denied a try to Greg Inglis in a hugely controversial let-off for the Blues, with a runaway try denied for what was called a knock-on.

Inglis showed great pace to streak away from the Blues defenders, but it was all for nought as the screen flashed red with ‘No Try.’

The referee on the ground called Inglis’ sprinting effort a try, but after close scrutiny by the video referee, no-try was decided with the referee calling a knock-on from Michael Morgan as Mitchell Pearce.

Inglis picked the ball up after Morgan was deemed to have raked the ball from Pearce’s hands, with the ball also ricocheting off Queensland prop Nate Myles’ hands.

The score at the time of the incident was 20-18 in favour of NSW, and immediately followed a similarly controversial incident where NSW were denied a try due to a forward pass.

Focussing on the Inglis incident, however, and it would have likely put the Maroons in the lead 24-20 with just over ten minutes to play.

Instead, the Blues were given the ball from the a scrum as Morgan, not Pearce, was deemed to have knocked on first despite not being in possession of the football, and Josh Dugan crossed for NSW in what proved to be the match-sealing try.

Maroons fans were irate at the decision, which had an immediate impact on the scoreboard, and undoubtedly on the momentum of the match.

What do you think Roarers? Were Queensland robbed of a try? Was it a square up from the earlier forward pass call against NSW?

How do you think that call affected the match? If that try is awarded, which team goes on to win.

NSW appeared to be finishing the stronger, so would it not have mattered?

Qld wants a dead rubber no matter what ground they play on.....they are addicted to winning and they can't fight that urge. Unfortunately for them and fortunate for us NSW's their champion status is fast running out. Don't get me wrong, they are very dangerous but NSW has some magic potion of their own that can miraculously appear when they play now. Bring on Game 3 and may e Team that shows up to play get the Series. COME ON NSW!

I'm glad Qld got him regardless of the fact that he is a NSW player by the Rules.

If try was awarded, the flow of the game would be different as the ball would be in Queensland possession after the kick off and anything was certain for that team with the ball. Obviously, it was a big call to disallow the try. Maroons would have secured the shield then if allowed a try.

Really?

"despite not being in possession of the football," You don't need to possess the football for it to be a knock on.. you literally just have to knock the ball forward while making a play at the ball and a tackler is always considering as playing at the ball.

Yes it was a try. Why?. it went backwards off Morgan, Pierce propelled it forward, it did not hit Myles Arm , it actually hit Pierce's leg (there is not substantial evidence about Myles' arm hitting it (after looking at it multiple times it still draws the same finding), after that the rest is irrelevant as all was within the rules. Result the video ref robbed QLD and may have got a word from someone higher above to deny the try as that is to the benefit of the games in marketing but not true in fairness.

"The penalties went Qld way" yeah right. What could have been more crucial than the ref marching NSW up the field the last 15minutes and ensuring they stay there until the game was over. What a farce.

"1. There is no evidence that the ball touched Gilletts boot." errr, yes there is. There is a video of the ball touching his boot. That is called evidence.

Because..................it's fun to watch Queenslanders throw a tanty the minute something doesn't go their way. I'm loving Ken Hayes. "Let's take our ball home and never come back." You sound like a 6 year old!!!

Ken, If Qld won this match I would probably have no interest in reading the articles today, but we lost. So I was interested some feedback. So why are the winners making so many comments? Because...................................

Official ruling from the NRL was that Morgan did a deliberate and legal 1 on 1 strip, the ball went forward and hit Pearce's leg. That's the knock on. Play stops it's irrelevant what happens with Gilletts foot or Myles hand.

The ball comes of Pearces leg which puts Inglis onside, talk of the ball hitting Gilletts foot is just that ...talk, there is no proof that it hit Gillets foot, Inglis onisde "TRY"

though the ball wasn't a knockon because the ball at that time of grazing Myles fingers was bounding off the leg of pearce going backwards. The image proves this .... https://imageshack.com/i/ip9FNd2Vj
