NSW firebrand Klemmer loves to be hated

By James MacSmith / Roar Guru

David Klemmer has been appointed as Public Enemy No.1 in Queensland in the lead up to State of Origin III, and according to his NSW teammates that is just the way he likes it.

Klemmer’s stoush with Maroons’ back-rower Corey Parker has dominated the headlines since NSW victory at the MCG, with Queensland coach Mal Meninga declaring the Canterbury enforcer would be a target at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday.

But that won’t worry him at all, said his Dogs and Blues teammate Trent Hodkinson.

“David just goes out and plays the game aggressively and that is the type of player he is,” Hodkinson said.

“He is not going to change his game for anyone. He is going to go into game three as he did in game two and game one, he will prepare the same way and I’m sure he is looking forward to it.

“He will be smiling deep down and that is they type of thing he does.

“He is a very aggressive character, that is the way he plays the game, he doesn’t take a backward step and he won’t again.

“If he gets offside with the Queenslanders, so be it.”

Blues back-rower Ryan Hoffman said Klemmer was again primed for another big Origin encounter.

“I’m sure Klem knows he will have a big target on his back but he is the type of bloke that will be looking forward to it,” he said.

“We know and Klem knows that all he has to do is run hard and tackle hard. No more no less.”

Comparing Carl Webb to Klemmer? Klemmer is nearly 7 foot, 120kg, only 21, and most importantly, works hard to get results. The funny thing is every NSW supporter knows that Woods was the best on ground in game 2, but for some reason QLD are worried about Klemmer. It's perfect for the Blues.

Bulldog you have a point but I think Gappy meant in terms of game stamina NRL lads would leave the NFL players gasping for breath . The NFL have a specialist team for every situation and the game day roster is 52 players......no that is not a typo.

Gappy - I am a through and through league guy but I have to say you are speaking out of your ar$e on this subject. NFL is a very tough high impact game and much more so than NRL. NRL is tough from a physical exertion point to view but NFL is insane wrt impacts and potential injury. Everyone goes on about the padding and helmets but they are actually weapons.

For all you NSW supporters caught up in the David Klemmer hype, check Carl Webb - SOO 2001! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vf5Xr6Yz0M We never saw much from him after that debut, maybe that's what will happen to you. Good defensive planning usually takes the wind out of the sails of these 'boy wonders', it's harder to back up when they're ready for you. After all, what exactly did he do in origin 2, it was Woods who went through Scott which was an unusual lapse.

You should offer your services of trans ocean character judgement to the NFL, with the number of NFL players invovled in violent crime ...including murder and rape they could certainly use your "gift" .

Sorry to tell you mate but all you boys in the NFL would get smashed in the NRL. They could play for 60mins without 10 thousand breaks. one big hit every 5 mins is ok but a big hit every min would be to much

And when you counsel troubled young men do you often pre-judge them from the other side of the world without ever having spoken to them ?

He is a little boy in a big body. Being a casual follower of the sport because of Jarryd Hayne in the NFL, I have taken an interest in the game he played in Aussie. There is no doubt Hayne moves well and returns very well. The game of NRL is very physical as are other games, believe me even with padding NFL is brutal. Klemmer is a big body with a scared little boy inside. I counsel troubled young men and see this behaviour often. He does not need praise for his poor behaviour, it will not serve him longterm. The handshake at the final siren must be authentic, not just an empty gesture. Looking forward to the finale. Diss away, luv ya down under : )

Well everyone that knows him likes him, barring the QLD players of course. Who are you to him? Do you know him on a personal level or are you just another scared Queenslander? :)

Sammy would be my pick to lock horns with him from an entertainment point of view. And Myles from an effectiveness point of view. All depends on the rotations and whether they are buying into this Klemmer vs The World routine. Hope Parker doesn't get in a tangle and get involved. Hasn't been the strongest point in his game since he had no hair.

You would like to think Thaiday will back up his talk with a bit of action. And Parker must be absolutely smarting after being made to look like a goose with his comments in game 2. The key will be qlds right side. Thaiday Cronk Hodges Gagai and Inglis chiming in on attack is a pretty scary proposition i think.

Pfft. I love what he brings to the game. Only hope that QLD match it 3 fold. Papi, Sam + Myles

The Maroon pack know that anything goes in Origin and in which some are playing their last. David Klemmer needs 20 minutes playing time to make a massive contribution. I just hope Laurie does not have him in the starting line up. May the Belmore Boys return uninjured.

Them there gallows crows wont be squawking very much come next Wednesday , the big fella will once again run over the top of his aging combatants and hopefully do it with a measured amount of disrespect . The age of the Maroons is over the age of the Blues is here.

Get it - you don't like him. Did you watch the game on Monday night? He was up against a pack with four internationals and scattered them like nine-pins. He's 21 and has played for Australia and NSW in a position where players typically come into their own a bit later. A lot of young blokes come from U20's and it takes them a couple of years to adjust to playing against men. Not Klemmer. He's a special talent. He's going to have his bad days...it's just a shame there will be gallows crows like you death riding him when it happens.
