[VIDEO] Ashes: England vs Australia first Test highlights - Day 1 cricket live scores, blog

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

It’s the start of a series that the world of Test cricket fans have been waiting for with bated breath as England host Australia in the first Ashes Test from Wednesday. You can follow live scores and a blog of the first day of this game from 8:00pm (AEST).

Since losing the Test series against Pakistan in UAE last year, Australia have been on a roll in all formats. South Africa were brushed away in ODIs, India were beaten 2-0, a tri-series was easily won, the fifth World Cup title was claimed, and despite signs of rust, West Indies were steamrolled in two Tests.

They enter the Ashes as favourites and showed why they will be difficult opponents when they cruised past both Kent and Essex in their warm-up games.

Ryan Harris’ retirement could have evened things up slightly according to some experts, but it will be interesting to see whether the grass on the Cardiff pitch nullifies that to any extent. Of course, a lot could also depend on whether the curator decides to let that green remain or if he gives it a snip going into the first day of this much-awaited Test.

If Michael Clarke’s pre-match conference is to be believed, we could be looking at Australia going in with a four-pronged seam bowling attack with either Mitchell Marsh or Shane Watson to act as the fifth, change bowler.

Apart from slow over-rates, this could also be an interesting move because the team winning the toss will most likely to field first and hence will be batting fourth in the Test. They might not need that extra spinner.

From an Aussie perspective, if that were to be the case, they will rely on Steven Smith and Adam Voges to fill in with some overs while more vitally, Peter Siddle could get a chance to make the XI after being out for some time. Clarke also implied Siddle had been difficult to face in the nets.

The hosts England have seen a major upheaval since the previous Ashes defeat, but that’s what 5-0 routs to your most bitter rivals end up doing. Kevin Pietersen and ECB proved to be just ingredients in what became a major crisis over the past 18 months or so.

It has also seen England lose two coaches, Andy Flower and Peter Moores and the appointment of Trevor Bayliss as a replacement. This will be Bayliss’ first job as England coach and it couldn’t have been a tougher assignment.

England’s 13 consists of fast bowler Steven Finn and leggie Adil Rashid. While there were talks of the management looking to unleash the attacking option in Rashid for this game, the pitch conditions will come into consideration. It could make more sense for them to play the extra seamer too, and feature Moeen Ali as the spinning option to ensure control on such a surface.

Mark Wood had a decent series against New Zealand and should retain his spot as the third seamer behind Jams Anderson and Stuart Broad while Ben Stokes’ aggressive abilities with both, the bat and the ball, should edge out Finn from the line-up.

Tough work bowling on this road. I do not envy our bowlers one little bit. Why do these dead tracks seems to be far more prevalent these days? Had them in Aus against India. Then in the Caribbean. You can bet the English curators will be producing more like this deck to nullify the pace of Johnson and Starc.

Don't know if you could say that, they haven't really needed to chase in the last 2 or 3 years

Not sure about that. Aussies aren't the best chasers in the world.

Advantage England. Haddin's drop could be crucial. A couple of the Aussie bowlers were walking like old men at the end there. How will they manage an entire series?

Thanks Suneer, Australia with their noses in front I think. Certainly a good first day.

And that ends a rather interesting day of Test cricket. It was a hard-fought one with honours probably shared but England have the runs on the board. And despite the obvious flat nature of the pitch, one almost thinks Australia could have done a lot better than they did with the ball. Starc picked up three but was patchy, Hazlewood was decent and the pick of the bowlers while Johnson struggled on the flat pitch. For England, Joe Root cashed in the life he got when on 0 and went on to score a biggie. He had good company from Ballance and Stokes, both of whom got 50s. Can England get to 400? If so, will it be enough? Back tomorrow for the second day's play which should have some of those answers.

Wow, despite those struggles, Broad has refused a single off the penultimate delivery and kept himself on strike. And he survives the final over to end the first day unbeaten. England end the day at 7/343.

Oh yes, a length ball first up followed by two bouncers. The second of those has Broad hopping, he seemed to have lost it completely. Manages to fend it away to the off side. 7/343 in the 88th

Yep, here's the last of the day and Hazlewood will be bowling to Broad. Expect a bouncer or three here?

Maiden from Johnson, with Moeen Ali still wanting to go after it. Beaten again. 7/343 in 87. We might have another over here.

Johnson will continue. Will be the last over of the day and Moeen Ali will take strike... ...first ball, it's wide and full and swinging further away. Moeen was having a dart at it and misses.

Stuart Broad walks out at nine. He has gone through a rather tough time with the bat ever since pinged on his face by a Varun Aaron bouncer. Wicket-maiden for Hazlewood. 7/343 in 86

Out! What a bad shot! Buttler's gone! Fullish ball, angling right back into Buttler and he jabs it straight to the mid-on fielder. Straightforward catch, and a soft dismissal that. Seven down now.

An appeal for lbw against Buttler but that Hazlewood delivery looked to be doing a lot and might have even gone over the top of the stumps. Given not-out and Australia don't want the review.

Johnson has gone for 87 from 19 overs. And gone wicketless too. Not the best of starts for him.

Crisp pulling this. Moeen loves to play that stroke to short balls and Johnson has been dispatched to the fence. 6/343 in 85, with the fifty-run stand up.

Starc is now back on the field but not sure if he can bowl immediately. Buttler gets one short in length and pulls Johnson away for a single.

An excellent over for England that, nine from it. The runs are continuing to flow despite the loss of those two wickets and that takes England to 6/338 in 84. The stand's worth 45 from 46 deliveries too.

A slip came off for Hazlewood and went into the covers. Buttler gets an edge and it races off through that very place where the slip was. Might not have carried but could have saved the four! 6/335 in the 84th, this stand's worth 42 already.

Wonder how much would that Starc injury hurt Australia at this stage.
