Have to agree FunBus, so disappointing. I was really looking forward to some insightful commentary on the six nations and instead found this!

Will England rule the world in 2019?

Great effort, thanks. I can’t watch the match and am hopping between here and cric info. How bad was Head’s over? Overawed, or just the batter getting after the new boy?

Great piece Ben. Completely agree.

We are not shareholders in our athletes

I agree, since there is no clear no 1 they are as deserving as anybody else and after a fantastic win at Edgbaston they are the form team at the moment. With back to back tests and a four man attack, I think it will be difficult, but not impossible, for Pakistan to get a result at the Oval.

I do feel however that with both England and Australia touring India; India are more likely to be crowned no1.

Aussies close to losing No.1 Test ranking

Saying that England is the real no 1 cricketing side is pure hubris. At the moment their are 3 deeply flawed teams vying for the spot:

India, who can’t travel. England, dodgy middle order, no front line spinner and no out and out quick. Australia, useless against spin and dodgy against the moving ball.

I do rate Moeen. Since Southampton he has taken more wickets on unhelpful slow pitches than Yasir Shah, however he is no Swan or Panesar.

Personally I agree with Cook’s assessment; 2 years before we see the best from England.

India, with both England and Australia touring, are clear favorites for a protracted spell at the top. Of course if either Australia or England win in India then they would deservedly claim the no 1 mantle.

Very sad.

Hoping that he makes a full and speedy recovery.

Such sad news puts sport into context. Wishing both him and his young family the very best.

Well said, couldn’t agree more.

Time for rugby's refs to front up after matches

Excellent post and a good read, thank you.

Suneer, many thanks for all your hard work. Didn’t expect England to be here after such a disastrous world cup. Hope they win today but whatever the result, its certainly been and unexpectedly good summer for England.

At last a follow on! Well played Australia. Very poor by England, actually very poor hardly does that batting abomination justice.
England just need to bat for two and half days and I’ll get my wish for a five day test!

Many thanks for your much appreciated efforts throughout this series. Hoping for a good five day test, topped of with an England win.

Personally, I hope that KP never gets close to the English team again, even if you can forgive his past indiscretions, ‘The Book’, in my opinion, was the final straw. Yes he is a great batsman; exciting and innovative, with the ability to turn a game, yet I question his team commitment.

To often in the past I’ve watched KP come to the crease with England in a difficult position, only to watch him trudge back again, out for very little after playing a silly shot. When questioned, his answer was always the same, “That’s my game.” I accept the call for English players to play their natural game, play their shots and enjoy themselves, yet a number three must be able to dig in and put a price on his wicket. KP has not always done that.

In my opinion, the team always comes first and after the debacle of the last Ashes it became clear that not all was well within the English dressing room. I accept that pinning all the blame onto one individual is both simplistic and wrong, England’s dysfunction was far beyond a single root cause. Yet the body language of the English team with KP gone is far more positive and arguably Cooks captaincy more assured, though still conservative in the tests against NZ.

England’s young and exciting middle order are relatively new to test cricket I feel that they will be able to better develop as players within a positive team environment. After the accusations banded about in KP’s recently published book, is that really possible with him back in the dressing room?

Any return by KP would be triumphalist, both by him and his many supporters, (Think clouds parting and heavenly quire bursting into voice as KP walks across the hallowed turf.) What then for team unity?

England may lose this Ashes and as an England supporter that would be disappointing, yet not unexpected. However the team we are building now gives me hope for the future, and team ethos is, in my opinion, essential for that future.

If England lose, could Kevin Pietersen be recalled?

Thanks Suneer, Australia with their noses in front I think. Certainly a good first day.

Hmmmm, well I would beg to differ as to the factuality of the said piece. A list of opinions, no matter how ‘snappily’ written, are just that, mere opinions.

Perhaps I am not a sports fan, the idea of hating the opposition as they endeavor to win is abhorrent. To be entertained by the greats of any sport is a privilege.

Sledging, has become a tawdry and dismal footnote to the modern game.

I completely agree with you, yet as each point became more and more outlandish, I assumed that it was written very much ‘tongue in cheek’. Perhaps I miss-read the authors intention.

Thanks Blake, nice article. Started of sledging the computer screen, ended up grinning. One of the great talking points of the recent NZ tour, apart from England’s new found ability at the white ball game, was the spirit in which the games were played. Most refreshing. Unfortunately I doubt very much if we’ll see a repeat during a hard fought Ashes series.

Thanks for that David, I remember that remarkable bowling display and have been wracking my brains recently trying to remember who the guy was. Always wondered why he never toured again.
