Aloisi eases Roar fears before Liverpool game

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Days before their exhibition clash with English giants Liverpool, Brisbane Roar players have been told they’ll never walk alone.

The visit by the English Premier League club is a welcome distraction from the Roar’s financial uncertainty, but coach John Aloisi is confident the club will pay players’ wages on time this week – unlike the previous pay packets, which went out two weeks late.

He couldn’t confirm reports that Indonesian owners the Bakrie Group have found new investors but, since players returned to pre-season, has been trying to ease their fears about the future.

“I’ve been told today that everyone’s going to get paid, so that’s all that we can worry about, but I’ve said to the players `those things will get sorted out’,” Aloisi told reporters.

“Brisbane Roar will be around no matter what.

“When you’re away, it’s difficult, because things will be going on in their heads … (so) when they got back in, the first thing I said was `this football club will always be around’.”

The clash with Liverpool may be a pre-season fixture, but Aloisi believes neither side will be taking it lightly.

He says his team will be desperate to practice some of the new ideas he’s been implementing at training, while Liverpool, one of the game’s biggest clubs, are never out of the spotlight.

“They’re definitely not here for a holiday,” the former Socceroo said.

“When you’re at a big club like Liverpool, you’re judged and scrutinised on every performance, especially in pre-season.

“They’ll be feeling that straight away. They won’t want a bad performance or a bad result.

“We expect a tough game and a Liverpool that are going to want to prove to the world they’re going to be strong this season.”

Liverpool will hold their first training sessions in Brisbane on Thursday evening at Suncorp Stadium.

The Roar, meanwhile, will go into the match without captain Matt McKay or defender Luke DeVere, with both ruled out by Aloisi on Tuesday.

TK/jb - often the best discussions on this site arise from extreme views one way or another or an over reaction here and there. There's been enough said on the current mis-management at Roar but a natural consequence is the impact it has on fans with your stance TK not unusual lately nor the opposing views expressed by myself and others, so it's reasonable to assume the fans are split and not united in any way at the present time. I've only been back in QLD for the last 6 seasons with my career taking me to Europe and Asia for 20 years; so I missed the meltdown of the NSL and all the various shenanigans surrounding that and your comments got me wondering - how many times can football in Queensland go through this crap before people decide to give up on it as its all too hard? The last time we had financial issues we lost Ange as a consequence but bounced back nicely, this time we haven't lost club staff as such but maybe, just maybe, we're losing the fans this time around? If we open up against Mariners and only 8,000 show up its going to be very hard for any owner, new or old, to stop cash Haemorrhaging out of the club next season which may well be the terminal trigger that tips Roar over the financial edge once and for all? I'd like to think Aloisi and the playing staff can correct last seasons stagnated playing style which in itself may be enough to draw fans back but under Dobsons leadership many fans have been disenfranchised over the past year and so far, Bakries et al leaving aside, I can't see anything that has been done to re-engage or invigorate Roars support.

Tk - I could have gone further and "speculated" as to who was paying Aloisi and Moore's initial salaries in an environment where players ,whose wages are actually in a sense guaranteed by the FFA,had not been paid for a month not to mention the rumours of a huge backroom staff also being unpaid. It is this information "vacuum" and resulting "speculation" that feeds the fires of discontent and it is another sign of rank bad management practices in vogue at this club. Has it changed????? again we can only speculate. Cheers jb

Appreciate the post JB. It is an opinion site so i expect a few scratches from time to time. I think there are organisational issues at roar and systemic and policy issues more broadly that affect the viability and progress of football in Qld that can't be overcome by fan support or passion alone. If I ever get the time to put it down in an opinion piece here I expect I could get a real mauling.

Let's hope they regret it Nic, a loss for 'pool wouldn't go down well at home :)

Aloisi thinks he's going to become a coaching genius and that's what's driving him. Total belief in his ability just like when he was a player. His failed stint down south was not his fault. Moore probably wants to get back into the drivers seat after being banished by Ange - again, wants to prove that it wasn't his 'fault'. McLaren? That is interesting but guaranteed first team football to show what he has and then onwards and upwards from there. Maybe a sideways move to go upwards down the track?

Interesting questions you have raised jb. I also wondered why Aloisi, Moore and McLaren are so optimistic. They are obviously privy to information that we are not, or perhaps I should say "I am not". I witnessed the bankruptcy of an associate due to the absurd hesitancy of his so called supporters ("we wanted to see how you would go before using your services"). Some may think this is an irrelevant comment, so I ask that they think about it. When I decided to renew my membership, as previously advised, I was well aware of the risks - very small beer IMO.

I know you aren't a fair weather fan TK. That's a stretch. I just don't think things will be so dire that there the Roar will collapse or members will lose their money. Not saying I'm happy with all the crap that is going on either. I will be wearing Roar gear into work tomorrow to offset this sudden influx of Red.

Will definitely be an exciting game, although only 5 or 6 star players are in the lineup - no coutinho or Firmino or Balotelli, although there was Copa America and teams go out a bit more fatigued surely they could make an appearance from the bench.

TK - You will have to pick your words carefully on this site or you will quickly ecome a target for those who read your viewpoint and immediately look for some part of the comment upon which they can chastise you. Those well meaning fans will never admit to having concerns over recent goings on,they will never question why a player/coach of Aloisi's standard was lured away from a comfortable TV gig to take over a club where the players had not been paid, and the owners has gone public in stating they were, at the worst, looking for a sale, or at the best "partners" They will not question how another "dyed in the wool" pro. like Craig Moore was lured away from a good gig with the Socceroos to become a "football operations manager", of a club where the future had to termed as vague, also why a very promising young striker like McLaren is attracted to a club with huge financial problems However there are thinkers around who do look at the big picture and until the club comes clean and informs their long suffering fans what is going on,like you, will continue to withold their hard earned financial support. Cheers jb

Well slap me down and call me chastised. My decision to await clarification of the ownership of the club should not be misinterpreted as any lack of support for the team. I feel that it is equally valid to await a new owner and sign up indicating a vote of confidence in that situation. I admit many of you have a lot more faith in the continued viability of the Club than I do - seriously owning an A league club appears akin to a philanthropic undertaking. Hats off to all of you who have already signed up again. I hope that there is better internal oversight of the backroom in future and that they have put a broom through the place to weed out any other staff who directly contributed to the current situation. As for accusations of being a fair weather fan, well that’s easy to say I guess. All I will say in response is that since moving to Qld in the early 90’s I’ve spent my fair share of time watching the Brisbane Strikers go around the NSL in both good times and the bad, and have followed the Roar after the awarding of the franchise to them over the Strikers when the A – League was created. On a separate note – plenty of people in Liverpool gear wandering around in Brisbane today, a shot in the arm for local hospitality businesses.

We (2 families) held off till late but renewed on time......fact is as many have stated above now is the time more than ever to support the Club - the FFA are never going to allow the Roar to collapse and be out of the comp. It disappoints me that those sorts of negative comments are even made. Every Roar member should be out there trying to recruit just one new member, imagine what that would do for our club. The signing of Jamie MacLaren I think instills a significant degree of optimism. Fingers crossed for a great season!

i think Jets have punched above their weight for member numbers. I mean that as a compliment too. Per capita Jets would probably have the highest membership rates. I know TK is itching to get in and get his membership.............. On another note - when I did put in my order I'm assuming the number I was given is representative of how many memberships sold - and that was 6800 or so. I may be wrong. But if i'm right that's not bad for this stage of the season.

Not wanting to pick on TK but I am over some of the bull, even some members of the Den have stated they're not renewing because of the Bakries. When your "active support" can be so fickle you know you have problems. Apart from the Bakries all the idiots that caused this mess have gone; we're left with a decent squad, some great youth players, a promising new striker, and an experienced (in football terms) coaching team. So-called supporters having tantrums on the side lines is now pointless - all the complaints and criticisms we made last year proved to be correct and all but Fong have gone and even he's going - so after all the sh*t has left us now is the time to stand up and be a supporter imo!!

Worse case we end up in FFA ownership and they will honour the memberships sold. So there's no risk there. It's easy to be a member when we're winning so c'mon, get your renewals in .....

Agree Ian, Roar will start the new season one way or another so holding off renewing membership is not helping anything nod going to change anything. I understand people's positions tho, last year was the season from hell for us but after 4 great seasons (when the highs were really high) I recon the players are deserving of my renewal and I wanted to demonstrate to any new owners that this fan and his family are backing Roar.

@Tk : So you're waiting to see if your club survives before you support it? This isn't the first time I've read a similar comment from a Roar fan. Perhaps if the 7k fans who are holding off on renewing memberships in case the club collapses actually renew then the picture may be rosier. Is there another set of fans so entitled and so fickle? Jets are rubbish, absolute rubbish and have been for years. In a city of 300k they have 10k plus members. Roar have 3 recent titles, CL qualification, star names and finals football last year and about the same number of members from a city of what,2 million? And now they have a hiccup and their "fans" are only supporting them if they survive??

We need some positive input here. I have renewed my membership - $25 down and $25 per month. Come on all you fair weather supporters! Are you worried about losing $25? That is all you are risking, as you can authorise your bank to cancel the monthly payment at any time. The situation will be much clearer by the time the first monthly instalment falls due. In a worst case scenario, surely FFA would honour fans' membership payments? If not, oh well... In the meantime, Roar needs all the support it can get at the moment. Hopefully all players were paid on time. That will leave them with only their playing abilities to worry about.
