[Highlights] Broncos beat Tigers to extend streak

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Brisbane have overcome a Wests Tigers comeback to claim their seventh NRL win in a row.

The Broncos will stay on top of the NRL ladder after the 42-16 victory in front of 37,620 fans at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

The win was set up by a dominant first half in which the Broncos ran in five unanswered tries, including two to backrower Alex Glenn, to take a 26-0 lead into the sheds.

Brisbane five-eighth Anthony Milford’s moment of magic sealed the home team’s first half dominance.

Milford’s no-look inside pass released Darius Boyd, who then found Jack Reed and the Brisbane centre outsprinted Kevin Naiqama to score right on the siren.

That scoreline may have lulled Brisbane into a false sense of security as the Tigers ran in three tries inside the opening 15 minutes of the second half.

Hard-running Ava Seumanafagai sparked the revival when he crashed over after a pass by Luke Brooks which looked suspiciously forward.

Just four minutes later Manaia Cherrington dived over from dummy-half and then James Tedesco’s flick pass released Naiqama, who sprinted down the touchline before finding Mitchell Moses to reduce the deficit to just 10.

An accidental elbow to the head of Tim Simona left the Tigers centre dazed and halted the visitor’s momentum.

After Simona was taken from the field for a concussion test, Broncos winger Lachlan Maranta crossed twice to complete a hat-trick and secure the points for Brisbane.

The defeat is the Tigers’ fourth in a row and leaves them rooted to the bottom of the competition ladder ahead of Friday’s clash with the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium.

If the Video Ref used the same principles to determine "held" in the Jarrod Croker no-try against the Dragons early in the year, Hunt was tackled 3 times on that big run of his (and I know he wasn't tackled).

Well he isn't alone there. How could anyone like the Broncos (except their fans), they have a whole big city to themselves. Their players have enormous TPA's and FTA advantages. If they don't bother developing a player, they just take them when they're first class players. Not sure why they would be overly happy to win a premiership, they're basically handed to them. It's not exactly a magnificent achievement. It's like James Packer becoming successful; he was 95% there before he started. I trust Milford's Dad is now ok, and that Barba and Hannant's homesickness has got better - oh yeah I forgot, that problem went away as soon as they started playing badly (surprise, surprise). Maybe the centre of the Rugby League World really is north of Goondiwindi; if so, there should be more teams up there. You could have Parra and Manly I'm sure.

They would have to be number 1 for long distance tries too you would think. They seem to score them from everywhere.

The points for has been to-ing and fro-ing between the Raiders and Broncos.

I meant based solely on points for. They've been number one in tries scored for a long while.

Broncos have had #1 attack for a few weeks now. Not after this round as you think.

2 more positives than Bench Barba has got all season. Milford was electric every time he got the ball. He isn't there to defend. Look at the size of him. He put in a couple of great kicks. He put Galloway on his backside which was fun to watch. You are a tough critic if you didn't enjoy watching him yesterday.

They really seem to drop a gear whenever Parker comes off, maybe someone like McCullough need to take more of a leadership role to keep momentum going

milford had a mixed afternoon.. keeping it real, he put in a grubber for Glenn...1 try..good,then beautiful ball inside for darius, who did just as much to make the try with his final pass.. ok 2 tries, anything beyond that in the 80 minutes ? on the other hand...fails to take cherrington..6 points..brushed like a fly by Naquaima..12 points.. my scoresheet is made 2 gifted 2.. attack 8 defence 2 sadder fact is the young tigers center had an abysmal, just plain awful day

Hey Muzz, u starting to come good? Things were getting a little feverish last week. Hey, but the Broncos...credit where credit is due..they've been building for a few years now...the Rorters won't have it all their own way.

Here we go. V.O.R is hopping on the Broncos bandwagon. I actually look forward to watching the Raiders play where as the pressers use to be the highlight. Strange.

I wouldn't be too concerned. 6 top line players taking the week off of training says that Bennett was never concerned that this game would go South. Soon as they realised they could let it slip they put it up a gear again. Did I hear Boyd went to Fiji during the week? Bennett realises Origin takes a lot out of these guys both physically and mentally. Smart move. The Broncos look like a team that are really enjoying their footy. Under Bennett the Broncos seem to have given away the practice of low percentage short flat passing game in the middle third. No brainer. This year Alex Glenn is showing what he is capable of....and he appears to be profiting from Milfords presence. Corey Oates will represent Australia....a natural athletic hulk of a league player. The way he dropped his shoulder for the try in the 79th was very old school. Comparing the form lines of the Broncos, Souths, Roosters, Cowboys. I think on their day any one of these teams can take the title. There is still a question mark over the Broncos short kicking game in big matches...they'll need to keep channelling Alfie. We know what a fit full roster at the Bunnies & Roosters is capable of. The Cowboys & Broncos are still building...it's just a matter of whether they will reach their full potential this year or not. Either way, the youth of the Broncos spine is ushering in a new era. New interchange rules will only assist the dangerous duo in Milford and Hunt. Lastly, the Broncos along with the Roosters & Canberra are reminding League fans what an entertaining game league can be. It's good to see teams shifting the ball early in the tackle count again. It was getting a bit formulaic there for a decade or so. ;)

End score didn't reflect the whole game really. Brisbane came out lax and then played themselves into something of a victims mentality in the second half and just let the pressure get to them. Can't do that against the top teams. Tigers would have few positives to take from this, but I thought Moses showed more in a beaten team than I've seen from him his whole career so far. Cherrington looks the goods. Gotta be more mindful of opposition wingers. Pat never should've been left to take Oates one on one. Clever play by hodges, but the Tigers were already sliding the other way before the tackle was complete. Woods needs to do something about that hair. You're going bald mate. Either shave your head or do something with it that doesn't resemble a retired rock star/has been. Put it in a bun, that's all the rage now with these young kids and their hip hop swaggoo. Hunt and Milf are really showing some flair. I think this win puts them in at outright 1st for attack. Problem is it looks like the boys were a little disjointed in defence, and they really let that first try after halftime get to them. Apparently Bennett gave the Origin players the week off until Friday/Saturday so hopefully that was all it was. If they can sort out those little things they'll be looking incredibly hard to beat. Round 24 is looking like a blockbuster (as well as maybe round 25 depending on which Souths we see).
