The second edition of the FFA Cup is already well advanced but it’s at the Round of 32 that people really begin to take notice. Join us on The Roar for the pick of the fixtures between Palm Beach and South Melbourne with live scores and commentary from 7:30pm AEST.
This is the first stage where the competition takes on a truly national flavour and it is where the A-League clubs join in and the television cameras are rolling.
There will be four matches played this evening, all kicking off at the same time. To me there is a similarity with election night coverage with live crosses to various venues across the country with a few enthusiastic fans in the background. It’s also a night for the fans of the lesser known clubs to cheer on their team often against more fancied opponents.
Palm Beach are not complete strangers to Australian football fans having made it to the quarter final stage last year. They are currently sitting at the top of the Queensland NPL ladder and with nominal home advantage could be hard to stop.
South Melbourne are also not unknown to local football fans. They are arguably the most famous football club in the history of the sport in this country, having been one of the mainstays of the old NSL competition. It will be great to welcome them back to the national stage.
Chris Taylor’s South Melbourne outfit currently lie third on the Victorian NPL table so in some ways this match will be a test of strength between the Victorian and Queensland NPL competitions.
The early rounds of the FFA cup are about all the clubs and the fans so it would be great to see banter about each of the games.
Prediction
Home ground advantage and recent experience should give the Sharks the edge. Palm Beach to win 2-1.

I watched the palm beach vs South Melbourne game and it was great to watch. I think it's much more entertaining when they aren't playing an A League team as it's much more open and they don't get strangled out of the match. Plus the fitness levels are more equal. Not saying the A League team's are hugely superior; but there is a jump in overall quality of touches, passes, formation, fitness, etc. Many times you see the NPL guys actually trying to beat players with individual skill which is fu nto watch, whether it comes off or not is another story. Although for the televised game I would prefer they go to a home teams actual stadium. I understand Palm Beach's home ground doesn't have good enough lighting, but that just means Fox should have gone to one of the other games instead (provided they also had adequate lighting)...

Have to feel sorry for Eagar there, the South Melbourne skipper. Palm Beach have just shaded it 8-7 in the penalty shootout. Well that was a spectacular ending to a really great game. Extremely competitive with the game played in a good spirit. What a fantastic advert for the NPL and FFA Cup. South Melbourne had slightly the better of the play over the whole game but Palm Beach dug deep as there fitness was tested. Some great work by Lugic, Norton and Epifano from South Melbourne. I would have Lujic as my man of the match.
