Richard Graham reappointed as Reds coach for 2016 Super Rugby season

By The Roar / Editor

Reds coach Richard Graham has had his contract extended for the 2016 Super Rugby season.

Graham has been reappointed after a disappointing season for the franchise, and will operate under a new Executive General Manager in former Wallaby Daniel Herbert.

Graham has had to endure calls from fans to see him step down, and will be keen to lead the Reds to success in 2016.

Chairman of the Queensland Rugby Union Rod McCall was confident it was the right structure to take the Reds forward.

“The recent Reds High Performance Review made clear recommendations around the structure of our organisation.

“We feel the appointment of our first Executive General Manger to oversee our Performance Rugby Department will bring us into line with best practice and allow us every opportunity for success.

“On the back of further recommendations from the review, QRU ran an open and thorough process for the roles of head coach and also attack and defence coaches. The Coaching Review Panel considered over 20 coaching applications from the local and international Rugby markets.

“We fully understand that the results of the Reds over the last two seasons have been unacceptable, however we feel strongly that Richard is the right man to lead us into the 2016 season under this new structure.”

Graham said he was hungry to bring the Reds plenty of success in the coming season.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to coach this team again in 2016,” Graham said.

“As a squad we will not tolerate any excuses that compromise our preparations or performance in order to achieve success in 2016.”

QRU CEO Jim Carmichael said the following:

“In the Review an important insight was the need for us to implement an optimum high performance structure that is also aligned to our wider organisational plans.

“To that end, Daniel Herbert is an outstanding appointment as he not only has all the football-related experience and skill sets but he has also been a successful senior QRU executive, possessing wide-ranging corporate knowledge and a complete understanding of our objectives for the next five years for the Reds and Queensland Rugby.”

What do you reckon Roarers? Is this the right call for the Reds?

What happened to Brad Thorn . I thought he moved to Queensland to be on the coaching panel or in some capacity as a forward coach or conditioning coach.

"No one in the mainstream media seems to say it, but I can assure you that Richard Graham is the worst coach in Super Rugby. The stats don’t lie. As head coach of the Western Force and Queensland Reds, Graham’s total winning percentage in Super Rugby was 28.5 per cent. I would really like to hear how anyone can try to defend Graham. This stat alone says he cannot cut it at this level." If your point is that coaches are judged simply on their winning percentage, then that's just nonsense. Each coach has a unique team of players and circumstances that affect their results. If (for eg) you have a team of totally dud players you will certainly win no games - not at all the coach's fault in that case. 28.5% sure ain't flattering, but by itself it also proves very little.

Agreed. The whole franchise needs a good shot in the a*se and Hirdy knows all about those. A real lost opportunity.

Mediocre i think would be in the realms of a 50% to 60% winning record; Graham's with the Force and the Reds is 28%. 'An established pattern of failure as a coach' would possibly be a more accurate description.

If the outcome of the review was RGs reappointment then I feel sure that this will not satisfy members DJW.

Don't be a fool. Coaches rise and fall on success. RG failed at the force and has been awful at the Reds. He may be the nicest bloke in the world but he's a terrible coach. QRU a so out of touch it's not funny.

The QLD Board and Jim Carmichael in particular are a disgrace. They have lost the faith of the REDS supporter base. Something needs to be done seriously. Below article was published in the Roar 2014. Nothing has changed. Grahams coaching has gone from bad to worse. We are expected to accept mediocrity from highly paid incompetent professionals. What a Joke. Roar Rookie By Michael Gilbert, 3 May 2014 Michael Gilbert is a Roar Rookie Tagged: Reds, Richard Graham, Rugby Union, Super Rugby 116Have your say Email + enlarge image Richard Graham quit the Force for the Reds, but will he see out his contract? (Image: AAP/Paul Miller) Related coverage • Queensland Reds news • Rugby Union news • Super Rugby news No one in the mainstream media seems to say it, but I can assure you that Richard Graham is the worst coach in Super Rugby. The stats don’t lie. As head coach of the Western Force and Queensland Reds, Graham’s total winning percentage in Super Rugby was 28.5 per cent. I would really like to hear how anyone can try to defend Graham. This stat alone says he cannot cut it at this level. Focusing on Graham’s time at the Queensland Reds, the team has remained relatively unchanged in the last four years minus one or two players. Yet their performances this year have been the worst ever. Under Ewen McKenzie, the Reds finished 5th, 1st, 3rd and 5th. This year the Reds are hovering at 13th, and there has only been one major change. Graham has brought boring kicking field-position ideals to a team that built their success around an ability to play exciting, attacking rugby. Any team that has Quade Cooper at 10 has to have an element of unpredictability, and needs to be given a loose structure to which he can work his magic. The Reds also pride themselves on their one-on-one defence and ability to chop low. In the game against the Blues, the Reds worst performance in four years, they were falling off tackles, allowing the Blues ball runners to gain easy metres. I blame this on Richard Graham. Defence requires mental toughness. It is about putting your head into dark places and putting your body on the line. While I do not question the toughness of the Reds players, I do question whether or not Graham is able to get them into the necessary mindset to put their body on the line. The penalty rate has been well documented and I put this down to poor technique as a result of poor coaching. Dominant first up tackles have disappeared from the Reds’ game, but their continued pestering at the breakdown on balls that aren’t there to be played at has resulted in numerous penalties. This is again down to poor coaching. Players that were once starting for the Wallabies now look like the worst players running around in Super Rugby. Ben Tapuai and Mike Harris look nothing like the players they were three years ago and Graham doesn’t have the guts to make the big decisions and drop some these poor performers. McKenzie had the guts to make those tough calls. I wonder now if those in charge at the Reds have the guts to make the big calls and sack Graham? The players are clueless and the coach just cannot cut it at this level. Graham’s game plans don’t work and their predictability have put the Reds back to their easy-beat ways of the mid-2000s. It’s time for Graham and his Western Force coaching staff to go. We need new staff who are able to make decisions, get the best out of all their players and bring a game plan that offers exciting and unpredictable rugby. So it’s either goodbye to Richard Graham as coach, or goodbye to the glory days of the Queensland Reds.

I'm not a Reds fan but do we know if they are going to make any of the review or recruitment process transparent? Sounds like the review was just done to satisfy members and Graham was staying all along. I think Graham should have to wear a L plate on his jacket when coaching, first knuckles brought in to tell him how to do his job now the executive position (Dan Herbert). Maybe Graham was born with a birth mark that looks like the Reds logo and they all think his is the chosen one and are awaiting this come to fruition.

I agree NB, qlders place no blame on their senior players and think they all played magnificently but the coach got them the position on the ladder the player loyalty is bizarre and then they get stuck into Foley , hooper and AAC who play awesome every week and got the tahs premiership and finals

I jumped ship last year, TB! Just compare what the Reds are doing with what Tony McGahan, Zane Hilton (Both Queenslanders!!!!) and Co. are putting into place at the Rebels! JIm Carmichael has a lot to answer for when crowds fall from over 30,000 a few years ago to under 10,000 in 2016!! In the wider picture, the sad thing is that Australian Rugby needs Q'ld Rugby to be strong to compete internationally! God help us !!

Carmichael is not an idiot and would know that the reappointment of Graham puts his neck on the block. Given this is the case I simply can't believe he has made this decision for his and the Red's future without significant pressure from the old boys club on the board. I suspect he got railroaded and the ultimatum was 'our way or the highway'.
