Joe Burns is the future of Australian cricket

By Matt Gates / Roar Pro

Joe Burns may have had little time in the baggy green but is this guy the future of Australia?

Burns debuted for Australia in the Boxing Day Test against India in 2014, due to an injury to Mitchell Marsh.

Out cheaply from a nothing ball from Umesh Yadav, a lot of people thought this would be the end of Burns, but the selectors gave him another chance.

In his second Test in Sydney, Joe was able to make two half centuries and showed great signs. Yet he was then forgotten until being selected in the squad for The Ashes.

Burns didn’t get a game but he made his ODI debut last week against Ireland. This was a huge game for him to see where he was at and Burns scored 69 off 70 balls, hitting a number of boundaries including a six. He was aggressive and had a nice defence.

While he batted at number six in the two Tests he has played, Burns could be Australia’s next opener. He would be a perfect replacement for the retired Chris Rogers, and David Warner and Burns could be the next big thing.

Joe Burns looks like a perfect fit for Australia. I certainly hope Burns gets another chance in the whites and I’m sure if he does, he won’t disappoint!

OK, I like Khawaja, he was seriously impressive in Matador cup.

Dan Khawaja was the captain of the Aus A side and this straight after injury, If they wanted him to play more shield cricket then he wouldn't have been selected for Aus A and he was the highest scorer in the one dayers for Aus A and captained brilliantly. He should be there for the Bangladesh tour and i think he will have a big summer

I think with Watson's retirement its a certainty that Khawaja will play in the tests now and about time as he is a class act. I think Watson's retirement from Test cricket is pretty much akin to Ian Bell's retirement from limited-overs cricket, i.e. a recognition that he wasn't going to be selected again and putting an end to speculation. I wonder when KP will announce his retirement from international cricket.

I don't think they'll play Khawaja until he has some shield matches under his belt post-injury. S.Marsh got 2 runs in a test match after a history of being flaky, he should never get to play for AUS again in my opinion. Burns, Bancroft, Klinger, Smith, Voges, M.Marsh, Nevill, Starc, Siddle, Behrendorff, Lyon is my team for Bangladesh. I know you're not on the #KlingToKlinger train [someone on reddit scolded me with that one!] but what do you think of Behrendorff?

Agree, with Voges there in the middle order and the love-in for S Marsh to continue, I can't see them going with another old player. I think Warner's withdrawal from the series simply makes it that much more likely that Khawaja will be playing. The question then is does Bancroft get a go and the play one of Burns or Khawaja down the order or does Lynn get a go?

No, he won't. Bancroft, Burns, Khawaja, Smith, S.Marsh, M.Marsh, Nevill with Voges a possibility as the token old guy.

He looks decent enough to be picked, but nothing amazing. Khawaja seems to get more runs. Surely now with no Rogers, Clarke, Watson or Warner for Bangladesh tests Klinger will get a go.. his county season across all formats has been pure domination. His Aussie season was top notch across all formats too!

In two years time I can see Australia having a middle order something like this. Burns, Smith, Travis Head, Mitch Marsh. Burns has all the tools to be a successful #3 in my view. Has a solid technique. A good temperament. Every shot in the book and then some.

Looked pretty solid opening last night. As someone who has long pointed out that he had good numbers behind him and should at least be in the conversation about next Test batsmen along with the current sensations du jour touted on the basis of an innings or two (sometimes a season or two ago), have to say that when he tried to open the throttle a bit last night he didn't particularly look a definite long term pick as a one day opener. Long form cricket, more so.

bit of a harsh comment 'smell the fear'... Burns has been going extremely well. Hope he gets an extended run and the middle order slots don't go to all rounder/bits and pieces players and go to another bat with a few seasons of good form under the belt and no x-factor or promise or any other intangible/fleeting quality that pales beside consistent form.
