Seven to broadcast Jarryd Hayne's San Francisco 49ers games

By Riordan Lee / Editor

Channel Seven have announced a broadcast deal with the NFL for this season which will see all but two San Francisco 49ers games shown on 7mate.

The Australian public’s insatiable thirst for Jarryd Hayne reached fever-pitch with the inclusion of the former NRL star in the 49ers 53-man roster and the broadcaster has obliged – rejigging the current deal to ensure we’re fed an IV of ceaseless Hayne footage.

In America, Sunday is the day of rest… and football, with 13 of the round’s 16 games being played.

7mate will broadcast three of these games live each week (Monday our time), including every 49ers’ Sunday game, and the showpiece Sunday Night Football clash.

Foxtel, via ESPN, will also broadcast a game a week.

On top of this, Seven will show the NFL Playoffs, Kick-off game, Thanksgiving match and the Super Bowl.

Hayne’s first match – against the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday at 12:20pm AEST – will only be shown on ESPN as it’s a Monday night game. You can watch it on Foxtel, or via their online service Foxtel Play.

Seven has been negotiating with the NFL for a few weeks now, with one of the biggest roadblocks being the league’s commitment to equitable exposure for all teams.

“Part of our charter as NFL international is to represent all 32 teams equally. So the idea of having a specific broadcaster show all of one team’s games might not sit well with the other 31. But we’ll definitely work with them [Seven] to see if we can do more”, executive vice-president of international, Mark Waller, told Fairfax media.

However, the seismic interest in Hayne is simply too irresistible for both the NFL, and Channel Seven to pass up.

Seasoned fans might well bemoan the narrower range of games, but this is a unique and unparalleled chance for the NFL to grow the game in a country where it is still niche – and, as Waller explains, the move is not without precedent.

“In Mexico, we sit down with our broadcasters and try to make sure all 32 teams are represented but we also make sure the big popular teams down there – the Steelers,Cowboys, Patriots and the Seahawks – we try to make sure fans get a really good opportunity to see the teams they love the most.”

NFL devotees can still get their hardcore football fix from ESPN Australia who broadcast a comprehensive suite of games each week for both the NFL and NCAA (college football).

Here is the viewing schedule for San Francisco 49ers games on 7mate for the 2015 season (AEST):

Nate, You need to have a look at what Harry T is saying, This is an "Opportunity" to create interest in a niche sport in Australia that will almost certainly mean more and better coverage of the NFL in years to come. I will say though I wish the Australian media would ask the coaching staff question relating to the Team and not just questions about Jarryd Hayne that the coaches clearly cannot answer.

What a load of garbage. Free to air coverage has shown several quality games a year for many years here in Australia. Now because of Hayne that is changing and we get stuck with games featuring 49ers, Cardinals, Rams. If you honestly think that showing bad teams playing bad football week in week out is a good idea then there is something wrong with you. As for league pass, some of us find that to be an expense we can't justify so for me I have to rely on free to air and what I can stream online for free. Ideal? No. But the impact is minimal as long as there are quality games to watch on TV.

Loosen up guys, it is all good! It has bee some time since reading such a bunch of " precious" uprightness condescending self interest comments as the likes of Chris Meister and Nate. It is not about you ,your team or attempting to provide improved general coverage of NFL that Seven is doing this free to air coverage. It is about opportunity by association to capitalist on the "interest" being generated over a outsider, an under dog beating the odd's to get into the elite NFL. It is an opportunity to broaden the exposure and introduction to NFL to many who, if not for the exposure of Jarryd would not even make the effort to view. What Aussie would be interested specifically about a fellow compatriot trying to break into NFL, irrespective of the Team is is with and its position in the league ? If you are serious about the game you do not depend on a free to air commercial station for you sporting broadcast. You pay for it NFL Pass. Me, I have be a Steeler's supporter since 1996 when I went to live/ work in Pittsburgh. I had to have an interest in the same sport as my US colleagues. This only good News for true fans of the sport in Australia and may lead to improved coverage down the track if Seven's initiative pays off.

Many moons ago I chose the "Cheeseheads", the Green Bay Packers. I did so on the basis they are the only NFL team that is actually owned by its community. All the others are owned by rich individuals, or a consortium of businessmen etc. So, to my mind, Green Bay are more like traditional Aussie teams in their ownership. They also wear Australia's sporting colours.

I chose my team because they had lost the Superbowl the year before and were back in it again. It was my first game and I was only 10 years old, I think watching it on ABC. The Broncos got smashed that year and again 2 years later but watching Elway, Davis, and co. winning 2 championships in the 90's made the choice worth while. Plus I kinda loved the old orange uniforms, as ugly as they were.

Exactly. Not everyone is a "bandwagon". I chose on looks, mascot and because my team had won zilch.

Cowboys, 49rs, Steelers, Patriots, Packers, Lakers, Bulls, Celtics, Heat, Yankees, Red Sox, Blackhawks, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, BVB, AC Milan, Inter, Crusaders, Sydney Swans, Queensland Origin, Brazillian Football team, Fed Express, Tiger Woods, Ferrari - especially Michael S... I could go on and on about bandwagon teams. It is just pure jealousy because Hawks have come from nowhere to being one of the best teams. I am actually a Hawks fan, the reason I originally followed them was because they had won nothing, and I like the mascot. Simple as that. I got to see them win their first Superbowl which was great. Sure there are some bandwagons popping up. But that happens with every successful team in the history of sport.

The Seahawks bandwagon has even plagued Australia. Has there ever been a sports team ever that has had so many jump on in such a short space of time?

It all depends on who you are and how you like to decide to follow a team. When I started watching the NFL back in the 90s and had to pick a team I decided, being a lefty myself, to find a team with a left-handed quarterback. So, as that year Steve Young had taken over from Joe Montana at the 49ers, I ended up a 49ers fan. I keep thinking that if I'd started watching the previous year I'd have probably ended up following the Bengals. So I was pretty happy I hadn't! I think when I started watching Rugby League as a kid, coming from Hornsby, nowhere near any actual team zone, I had to pick a team and I think, as a 5-year old boy, I probably started following the Eels because I liked their colours and logo. Anyway, the point is, there are so many ways to pick a team. Just find your way!

It said they are showing 3 games a week, only one of which will be a 49ers game. So if you don't want to watch the 49ers you still have 2 other games each week you can watch. And unless you are unemployed or retired or do shift-work that leaves you free on Mondays, that's probably more than you can manage on a Monday anyway.

Also good for the 49ers fans who love the fact that Hayne being there means some coverage for the 49ers! Unfortunately, unless I happen to be sick on a Monday I'm probably not going to get much of a chance to watch the games anyway.

The 49er's is as good a place to start. The worst run team is the jets but they will never win anything.

The sporting thing to do when coming to a new sport is to pick the worst team to support.
