Goodes booed again in Perth

By News / Wire

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has questioned the conscience of Dockers fans who booed Adam Goodes during the AFL qualifying final.

The booing on Saturday was not as loud as the infamous July 26 game at Domain Stadium, which brought the matter to a head.

But it was there, despite Lyon again asking Fremantle fans during the week to show Goodes respect.

“Everyone puts their head on the pillow at night and deals with their own conscience,” he said.

“Mine’s pretty good with Adam Goodes and the Indigenous community at large.

“It’s disappointing personally … I think this is really simple.

“Once Adam made it known that he was taking in the context that he was – which he feels it’s racist, and his teammates – the AFL family would prefer everyone just cheered for their own (team) and left Adam alone.”

Sydney coach John Longmire said he had not heard any booing and had not spoken to Goodes about the issue post-match.

“I generally think it was okay,” he said.

Goodes was mighty for the Swans on Saturday, his first game at Domain Stadium since the July 26 game against West Coast.

The repeated booing from Eagles fans was not the first time it had happened with Goodes this season.

It prompted him to take a week off and it sparked a heated national debate about racism.

He started in the midfield against the Dockers and the 35-year-old turned back the clock with an outstanding game.

The two-time Brownlow Medallist stepped up manfully with the Swans missing onballers Kieren Jack and Luke Parker.

Longmire had also wanted to use Isaac Heeney through the midfield, but the youngster was hindered by a shin knock.

“Goodesy took that opportunity and played a really good game,” Longmire said.

“He was super – a couple of the old, experienced blokes in he and Rhyce Shaw were good.”

Just because he is a good human being doesn't make him a worthy footballer. I am also a good human being, doesn't mean I can just step on the football field, play as dirty as I like and then still command respect.

Yep- because if Ross Lyon says you're racist, that means you're racist. Remember when OJ Simpson said people were racist for charging him with murder?

find the behaviour of the yobbos in the west pathetic Can you Eastern Staters please kindly take your holier than thou approach to racism and footy and shove it where the sun doesn't shine. Racism has no place in football, that is a fact. Despite this re-writing of history led by Sheedy, the WAFL and the wider West Australian Football community has always been at the forefront of reconciliation, a fact that is only magnified when compared to the VFL, SANFL etc. I am sure that whenever you get 40,000 folks together from all walks of life you will unfortunately find a few that you wish didn't exist even on the east coast.. Unfortunately there was a smattering of boos, but there was a lot more silence then boos. The real shame was Channel trying to make a big deal out of it and the wider media community.

To put it in football terms, the Players Assoc don't want the *unwarranted* booing of Adam (all other booing = smilieface), the Coaches don't want it, the Players who've had the guts to speak out about it don't want it and the AFL itself don't want it in the game. So the AFL has said "You Will be considered a racist if you boo Adam Goodes relentlessly for simply touching the ball." Like some of the other AFL rules, you might not agree with it, but you'll still get pinged for it - even if the crowd is so loud you can't hear the whistle (like poor old Zac Jones). The only difference is that the umpire doesn't make the call, the guy sitting next to you does. Just don't get the sulks if someone does call you a racist because they don't really think you are one, only that you're behaving like one.

It's good to see you acknowledge that the dance and spear would incite the crowd. I'm arguing that the booing is essentially no worse or better at any Swans away game - even after all the noise, name calling and chest banging from Gill, Abbot, the media and fans. We only had a dance and spear thrown at the fans of two clubs. I'd like fans of each club to experience the dance and spear and I'd like the media to cover each event evenly. If nothing has changed then what was the point of dominating the airwaves for a week with a fabricated story about Perth crowds being worse than everyone else in the country when they clearly aren't, and never was. The media tried to cover up the booes from the recent Cattery and Saints games and saved their wrath for WA again. I noticed the op's at the Cattery but the AFL and media were trying to pretend it didn't happen instead of openly talking about it and having real conversations. I agree, the spear throwing and war. dance would have incited significant sections of the Freo crowd which would have been fine tbh. If you're going to do something do it properly and be consistent. I don't see much consistency from Goodes, Jetta, the AFL, the Media so I'm calling it out. Tell me about the booing from Victorian fans please and stop the WA witch hunt because it's not helping, it's just more noise and while your wasting time nothing is actually changing, it's just a lot louder and harder to hear anything from anyone.

Not too many of the people still jumping up and down about this on either side of the issue are any chance of changing their stance no matter how many names you call them. The arguments are so emotionally driven they get bogged down in generalisations, which people on either side then get all defensive about, hunkering down all the more in self-righteousness.

Condemn the action if you disagree with it, not the people.

He didn't take time off after round 9 2013. Stepped away one game against Adelaide 2015 after well documented nation wide booing campaign not due to his 'conduct' whatever that implies? Like Buddy stepping away for mental health reasons - although in Adam's case he was/is further persecuted, told to harden up, wear the blame and shame, stop existing, playing, retire... way to treat a champ hey!

Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge were booed all Friday night - bloody racists! Sam Mitchell gets booed more than Goodes, but apart from joking that he was happy to get away from the booing when he had a game off recently, has not made mention of it.

"The booing on Saturday was incessant " Dictionary definition: Incessant--- adjective , Meaning----- continuing without interruption; ceaseless; unending: I was there,& it certainly was not "ceaseless or unending". As a great player does,Goodsey spent a fair bit of time in the "forward 50". I can't vouch for the Western end of the Stadium, but at the end I was at,there was no targeted booing of Adam. Being among a group of people you can hear the comments as well as the booing,& they were all directed at the Umpires.

There we have a perfect example of the bullying tactics which are used so extensively on this forum. As a matter of fact,I did not boo Adam, neither did I call him a gorilla/sniper/cheat. On the contrary,I called him just what he is---------- "a great player". Tens of thousands of people at the game did not do anything to Adam Goodes, but they are being condemned as "racists". If anybody points that out in a rational manner,we get hit with nonsense like "fans are sooks",etc.

I give up. I'm sorry you can't understand what I'm saying, and never will. Continue life with your rose-coloured glasses, and continue to boo whoever you want. You might grow up one day and become a reasonable human being. If you don't understand the subtext of what's happening here, go and read up on it, and educate yourself. You might find something a bit more interesting instead of being isolated in your cocoon.

Don't agree with your argument: You only have to punch one bloke to be charged with assault; You only have to rape one woman to be called a rapist. The overwhelming message is that booing Goodes is not a good thing to do (irrespective of the reason why people do it). Sooooo, if a person continues to boo Goodes, they must be prepared to wear the labels we're all seeing here...'racist', 'bigot', 'moron', 'redneck', 'cashed-up bogan' etc. 'Bully' is another shoe that fits. We expect our kids not to bully - how about we set the same example as adults?
