Wright trade for Collingwood could see Jake of all trades switch

By Matt Tomlinson / Roar Rookie

One team looks as though it’s going to be busy this trade period. Collingwood has already shown interest in Brisbane small midfielder James Aish, Greater Western Sydney midfielder Adam Treloar and ruck man Matthew Kreuzer.

But while interest has cooled on the injury-prone Kreuzer, Aish and Treloar both appear to still be on Collingwood’s radar.

There are a few other trades Collingwood could complete that could see some short-term pain but lead to a massive gain in the future.

Although coach Nathan Buckley called a Travis Cloke trade “laughable”, it wouldn’t be too bad to look at the possibilities. Gold Coast are about to lose their power forward Charlie Dixon and will be in need of another big body in the forward line.

Cloke kicked only 34 goals this year to accompany his 23 misses. His questionable accuracy and Collingwood’s forward line clog could be easily fixed with one trade – Peter Wright.

The 203cm forward/ruck could be a good trade for Cloke – Wright’s height, age and athleticism are massive pluses for the forward line. A problem for Collingwood is their ruck’s marking skills, Wright adds depth into the ruck and tall forward department.

However Wright’s age means his potential is just that – potential. To accompany Wright in a trade would be a first-round draft pick. The official trade could end up looking like Cloke, a late second-round pick for Wright and Gold Coast’s first-round draft pick.

This leaves Collingwood with two first-round picks. As Gold Coast’s pick is higher up the pecking order, Collingwood’s number seven draft pick would be traded to GWS for Treloar and maybe Curtly Hampton.

Another interesting trade would be seeing what Collingwood can get for a first-round pick. The new rule allowing clubs to trade draft picks one year into the future means Collingwood could trade their 2016 first-round pick and pick up another one by the end of the year.

Now Jake Carlisle has quit Essendon but being contracted means that a trade is required to acquire the 200cm swingman. Carlisle could easily be acquired for a first-round draft pick and, if needed, Ben Kennedy. The Collingwood Football Club is missing a real tall full back that can go toe-to-toe with forwards standing 200cm and over.

Now Carlisle might be a back-up, but with players like Ben Reid and Nathan Brown who seem to injure themselves a lot, Carlisle will play. Brown 27 by the end of the year, if his shoulder or knee gives way again it could be the end of his career. Carlisle could fit the role perfectly.

Magpies have even more full backs than Essendon: Reid, Frost, Brown. We've just delisted Lachie Keefe so don't seem too desperate for a full back. We need to be putting our attention to getting a precision kick around half back or mid-field: preferably a long precision kick. A team like Brisbane, Suns, Carlton or Dockers should be going all out to get Carlisle.

I'm not sure that 2 picks around number 12 is that much of a gamble when you are getting a known gun. Unless you reckon it's putting too many eggs in one basket?

I think a team would be willing to part with a player and a second round pick. He has shown in patches that he has a ridiculously high footy IQ, but just needs a little bit of help around the ball. He could be a Tom Lynch type forward of the ball, just a bit slighter in frame but probably with a little more grey matter to compensate.

I reckon they will get to a situation where its a trigger clause; he's signed for $x, but if he is banned by WADA he loses $y of that $x. The draft is certainly an option. It happened with Luke Ball afterall, although I don't know if the gentleman's agreement amongst clubs that saw him fall to the 30th pick would hold nowadays that the clubs have gotten so shark-like on player movement. I expect a deal will get done; all of this is public posturing to maximise value by clubs and players, as is 75% of the play-by-play we get fed at this time of year. The other 25% is expectations management.

But does he really offer anything to a good side? I couldn’t imagine him getting a game for any of the top eight teams this years. You could be right, heading to a new team without expectations could be what he needs but if I was in charge of a club I wouldn’t even give up pick 80 for him.

I haven’t heard that Slane but if its true I think that would be a massive mistake by Richmond. Giving up your first round selection two years in a row could have serious implications for the future. Not to mention you will most likely have to give up your second round pick this year if you want to land Yarran. If they did/were able to pull those two deals off you would want to hope it delivered a premiership as you could be in for some lean years, but judging what I saw on the weekend I just don’t think this group is capable. I think the first thing Richmond need to do is give the captaincy to Riewoldt or Rance. Cotchin just isn’t a leader, it doesn’t mean he’s not a good player (he’s actually a very good player), he just isn’t the man to take this group to the next step.

I agree Ryan but do you think clubs be willing to give Essendon what they want for him given the WADA appeal still hanging over his head? Essendon are notoriously hard to deal with in the first instance and I can’t imagine clubs throwing everything at him. I can see this getting very messy and potentially Carlisle leaving through the preseason draft. If this happens I think it would be a bad look all-round.

Not to derail this article (you've all given me an idea for something next week...), but Jack Watts out of Melbourne looks to be gathering a bit of momentum. He'll be a restricted free agent at the end of next year (when his current deal expires) - I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Dees try and shop him around for some depth through the middle. Watts could be a fascinating proposition on a good side, where he doesn't have the burden of expectation.

Carlisle could be one of the best defenders in the league. He's tall, big bodied, but still has the agility and speed to go with guys that are in the 190cm range. His disposal has been a bit of a problem in the past, but I would expect him to line up as a true full back at his new club, where he'll only have 10ish disposals a game. Would be an absolute asset for anyone who picks him up.

There is a mature aged CHB at West Perth, Marcus Adams (193cm, 98kg, 22yo) who has dominated for a couple of years. I'd much prefer Freo to keep selecting young but mature players like him.

Especially if the rumours of the Tigers offering their first pick this year and next year for him are true.

Its amazing how many people have been talking him down at the same time hoping they will get him. Going on the comments perhaps he should sign a 2 year contract with Essendon at $400k, with either a trade or an upgraded contract with Essendon at the end of the first year. Then all this ASADA rubbish will have disappeared.

They could have James Frawley for him. Never been so underwhelmed by a mature aged recruit.

The much maligned T Cloke is an interesting species. Whilst you write that he averages 6.6 marks per game, a better indication of his "value", as selected, would be to see where those marks are taken. My son in law is a magpies fan, poor guy, offered up on the sacrificial altar by his father, and even he says he wouldn't mind Cloke taking a few marks in the forward half of the ground. The majority of his marks seem to be in the half back flank to wing area. Why not try him at CHB over the summer, see how he goes there. No one says he has to be a forward.

There are some pretty harsh comments on Carlisle here. He basically was the All Australian halfback only 2 years ago. Has been made to play out of position basically every since. 200cm players with mobility are pretty rare in this competition IMO

Indeed, Collingwood dreaming. Treloar for pick 7 seems barely acceptable, given the circumstances, but they keep thinking GWS need to throw in a sweetener, usually put Hampton in as the sweetener. Treloar was taken as an early 17 year old access player and has only increased his value with is performances. They should be the ones offering GWS the sweetener, not the other way around. Tell him he's dreaming.

Cloke can mark and kick, his field kicking is pretty good, it is his goal kicking from in close, play him at CHB

If the trade isn't fair for GC, what on earth makes you think that they would do the trade? Also, marking ability becomes much less valuable if you can't then kick the ball between the sticks.

More pressure in Adelaide and Perth, the fishbowl is even smaller and the media is spread over just 2 teams not 10. Agree, he may be better off in Brisbane !!, where there is no expectation or very little.
