But Lehmann is entitled to use his platform (and “public voice”) to insult someone who dared to question something he said?

This isn’t a petty grievance. It is a well reasoned critique of something our national coach said. That is what journalists are supposed to do, surely?

Boof Lehmann is a jerk, but it's what he's been bred to be

There are some pretty harsh comments on Carlisle here. He basically was the All Australian halfback only 2 years ago. Has been made to play out of position basically every since.

200cm players with mobility are pretty rare in this competition IMO

Wright trade for Collingwood could see Jake of all trades switch

I do see your point regarding yesterday – it is unfair to lump all fans into the one boat. I think we can absolutely agree on the disgusting nature of racism.

In my view, given the treatment Goodes has endured, it is thoroughly understandable that he shows some frustration on the field. I certainly would. I otherwise defer to Gerard Wheatley’s comments today about where this situation has gotten to.

Sorry – my question was why is Goodes being regularly boo-ed in the first place. Your post seems to be focused on yesterday.

You do say that Goodes has himself to blame for much of this. Is this a reference to his on-field performance, or something else (eg the war dance)?

You also say that you have “no idea why a small minority booed Goodes from the start as they do at games all round Australia”. Goodes is a champion footballer. Brownlow medallist and multiple premiership player. He has taken it upon himself to take a stand against racism. Yet there is the default booing at all games, which I can only trace back to the incident with the young Collingwood fan and then later the war dance. I consequently struggle to see how race has nothing to do with it.

Any suggestion that the booing of Goodes has nothing to do with his Aboriginality, and expressions of it, is just plain wrong. Why would opposition fans (in this case West Coast) boo a player because he isn’t playing well? As an explanation it doesn’t make a lick of sense.

If there is a reasoned argument out there for how the treatment of Adam Goodes this season is not racist, I am happy to hear it?

Just caught this. Superbly written Geoff. Good luck to Lyon – it is always apparent that he works hard and thus deserves every success.

Lyon shrugs off Adelaide memories to roar into history books

I don’t think they should be playing two spinners, aside from at Sydney. Look at Ashwin’s performance in Brisbane – he barely troubled the Aussies.

India have just lost the key moments in each game. But I have been impressed by their young talent – they will have some batting order in a few years.

India are copying Australia, and it's costing them victory

Watson surely does not warrant another chance at 3. He is an all-rounder only who should be dropped when Marsh is fit. Consequently he should bat at the all-rounder position, which would at least give him a licence to play aggressively (look at his one day record). I would have the order as follows:

1. Warner
2. Rogers
3. Marsh
4. Smith
5. Burns
6. Watson

Where will Burns fire, at first drop or in the middle order?

The problem with that point Ryan is that its not a game that is easy to instantly relate to (much like cricket). Most people had never been to a game before. Baseball is, by its nature, very slow and quite complex. Those without experience or knowledge can (and did) become bored easily.

The point about the food was just an example of poor coordination/service. When someone pays $100 (or more) for a ticket they rightly expect excellent service and something special. Long queues, limited replays and ground announcement, $8 light beers, and only the standard $6 meat pie being available seemed to be symptomatic of a wider issue.

As I said, I really enjoyed the actual game. But those of my friends who hadn’t watched a game of baseball before thought it really lacked atmosphere and promotion. And that seemed to be the case for many people in our area. If the intent was to put on “an experience” for potential fans then (I think) it struggled. Surely the intent wasn’t to just preach to the “true believers” like you and I?

We Sat in the Brewongle stand. There was no American themed food or drink available anywhere and by 8pm they had run out of most of the Aussie stuff anyway. I was told that the American stuff was only available in the “premium” section behind home plate, which (if true) seems pretty ridiculous.

I thought there could have been more efforts to involve the crowd and maybe some more music but maybe that’s just me.

In terms of the game, I thought the quality of the baseball was excellent and we were clearly seeing 2 of the games top players in Kershaw and Goldy.

Fair enough! They certainly don’t need to worry about people not coming back next week!

I went on Saturday night with 4 friends and we were all disappointed. No criticism of the players or teams though. The effort of the promoters and the SCG once they got you through the gates was abysmal. We paid our $100 each with thoughts of a MLB carnival like atmosphere with foot-long hotdogs and 5L cups of American beer. What we got instead was mid-strength Carlton, standard SCG food (pies, normal hotdogs on burger buns as they had even run out of hotdog buns!) and dead atmosphere. Limited crowd participation, music etc.

As a MLB and dodgers fan this experience won’t turn me off baseball, but it did give me (and all my friends) the distinct feeling that all the promoters were interested in was collecting our money and moving on.

Your right Geoff – this will be a serious team this year and a contender in 2. We may all look back on the GC and GWS “experiment” and conclude they were given too many draft picks – imagine having the likes of Whitfiled, Greene, Treloar, Congilio, Cameron, Patton etc etc all in the same team for the next 10 years. Wow.

Not the next premiers, but that Giant win is worth the hype

If Red Tracer starts surely she is favourite? If so, A Time for Julia would meet Red Tracer 2.5kgs better off for a 1.8L loss in the Mille Fox and will be each-way odds… Agree Catkins is the one to beat at the weights. Fire up Fifi a chance at odds and Solicit the one from the younger horses (though not particularly well weighted).

Apparently Carlton House has been working the house down and might put it up to the two favourites in the Ranvet.

I like that top 6 James, with Haddin at 7 – that would mean Watson would have to to bowl though? That is not a certainty by any means.,,
