Who will be the next AFL showstopper?

By Tom Baulch / Roar Guru

We all love the Pendleburys, Fyfes and the Abletts, the hard-running midfielders who consistently rake in 30+ possessions a game.

We may still adore what these players do and their undeniable work, but it’s indisputable that we all love something more about AFL. Something that keeps drawing us back to the footy every week, something other than our undying love of the team that we support.

Those players who may only get 10 possessions but can turn the game in the space of a single play. The players who set the game alight and make the AFL such an enjoyable and unpredictable sport. These players can make a play out of just about anything, the freaks and rarities of our game that only surface once every couple of years.

They are the showstoppers.

Eddie Betts, Cyril Rioli, Chad Wingard. The guys that attract non AFL fans to our great game. When Rioli and Betts leave, we ask ourselves – who will be footy’s next freak? Who will be our next showstopper?

Wingard is no doubt in the mix and we all love how he goes about it – taking hangers and kicking miraculous goals along with his clever flicks, taps and handballs.

An eye catcher is Wingard, a future superstar of our game no doubt.

As an Essendon supporter this year I have watched a lot of football, my own team included, but many games from other teams.

The Western Bulldogs have no doubt been my second favourite team in the AFL, but it’s been one of their young players that has caught my eye the most.

So much so that I find myself in the situation of wanting to watch him play every week, missing other commitments has become a ritual, and watching the Dogs has been my top priority.

Jake Stringer is currently my favourite player in the AFL. Finishing fifth in overall goals kicked when your only 21 is a fantastic achievement. A recent accolade that he has received has been his inaugural introduction into the ’22 Under 22′ team, also being named as the captain.

At 192cm, he can play anywhere. Highlighted by a Round 22 game where he collected the centre clearance and dashed away brushing off North Melbourne players as if they were flies. He can play tall or small, is quick, cannot be tackled and is an impossible match up for the opposition.

After breaking his leg in the lead up to the draft, he dropped down to pick number 5 and the dogs snatched him up in the 2012 national draft. His 2015 season was highlighted by his 6 goals against Adelaide before being subbed out in the third quarter of the game, only managing 58 per cent game time. ‘The Package’ is known for his inside 50 tackling pressure and his football smarts around goals.

Stringer has the potential to be the next freak show of the AFL. Over the last six weeks of the AFL season he kicked more than any other player, highlighting his elite skill.

Although Stringer only averages a mere 14 disposals a game, every time he gets near it you know something special is going to happen.

There is no doubt that ‘the package’ can be the AFL’s next showstopper.

Everything he does leaves you on the edge of your seat, wishing to see more of the masterclass. But does he have some major competition in Wingard, Dangerfield and maybe even Nic Naitanui.

Who else is in the game’s showstopper class?

Bulldogs have such a great list and will have several freaks in the next 4 years, love what they are doing down at the kennel!

Definately Yeo, loves to take hangers, has great pace and loves to kick goals. I believe that Yeo will be a better player than Stringer but to me Stringer is just does more flashy things, can kick better goals and is so exciting to watch.

Cameron is a great player - consistant, freakish and has the skills and speed of a great player. I cant say anything bad against him, but i personally just think that Stringer has all of these things, but just does them better than Cameron.

At the moment....Whilst acknowledging Stringer is a freak, and will continue, there is always a possibility that this time next year Footscray will have two freaks.

Stringer is more of a freak than the Bont.

Stringer and Bontempelli.I know Stringer is on people's radar this year but this time next I have the feeling the Bont will be to.

When WC are in position to move Yeo permanently into the middle we will see a very special showstopper begin to emerge.

Not really. Ah Chee is more like a skinny Rioli or Jack Billings type. He'll go in the first round. Wayne Milera is silky and reminds me of Michael O'Loughlin. He has a heart condition and his stocks are falling fast. Like what Nathan Eagleton had but apparently it's worse. He was tipped to go 2nd round but now it could be a 3rd round selection

Nic does it more than once a week and he's been very consistent, that's why he was named in thr AA squad. He carried an OP injury for the 2 seasons prior, maybe that's where you're getting the inconsistency from as he was up and down during this time.

I get the love for Stringer (he’s also one of my favourite players) but someone who’s just as exciting and as much as a showstopper is Jeremy Cameron. Stringer no doubt has him covered with the physical things he can do but Cameron has far superior skills and can do the incredible, he’s like a key position sized Wingard to me.

Jake Neade has plenty of potential, but the problem with him - like many other flashy players - is his inconsistency

I love Pearce Hanley, he is used commonly as a half backman but I would love to see him play as an attacking wingman or across half foward. I saw him kick a goal earlier in the year where he was on the boundry line and turned his man inside out and somehow ran into an open goal, such a freakish player. I think Essendon's Conor McKenna has much of the same attributes.

Love it Ryan, also love Dahlhaus, I think I liked him more with the dreadlocks though? haha

Jason, love Saad over at GC, Cripps is more of a hard running contested midfielder like Pendlebury, Josh Bruce was great in the first half of the season and then became kind of quiet in the second half. I do love Adam Saad, was picked up in the Rookie draft so its great to see him playing and playing well, has such great pace and flair - unlike any player I have ever seen.

Thanks TomC, love watching Cockatoo take on the game and showed what potential he has throughout the pre season and the season, just hasn't quite got any consistency in his game quite yet. Also love Caleb Daniel, such an inspiration for all the small players out there.

As others have said, Jake Stringer - but if they can get an injury free run, I'm going to nominate the brothers - Pearce and Cian Hanley. We already have seen glimpses of just how freakishly good Pearce can be, and from all accounts Cian was one of the best Gaelic footballers in the land. They've got polish, class and the ability to do some amazing things with the footy. Definitely worth a highlights package in the coming years. Fingers crossed anyway.

Brown is actually pretty exciting, just look at last year when he played and dominated the elimination final against Essendon.

Hi Jax, agree with nic nat but is a little inconsistent every week and I would be worried if I was paying good money every week just to watch Naitanui as for me Stringer produces something special more than once every single week.
