National Rugby Championship: Round 7 preview

By Brett McKay / Expert

Things are getting serious in the National Rugby Championship with just three rounds remaining. Brisbane City and Uni of Canberra look safe – they are playing for top spot and hosting rights in the finals from here – with a mouth-watering Round 8 showdown looming.

Behind them, five teams are playing for the last two spots.

The third-placed Sydney Stars could probably lock down one of those spots with a win on Friday night; with four wins already, a fifth would give them a seven-point gap over fourth-placed Melbourne.

From there only three points separate Melbourne from Perth, Queensland Country, and NSW Country in seventh spot. Queensland Country have a bye this weekend, while the other three will all take points off each other this weekend and next.

It’s shaping up as a cracking run home.

The weekly reminder
To watch the three games over the weekend, you’ll need full access to the Fox Sports website, or to the Fox Sport NOW app on Apple TV. NRC live streams can be accessed by Fox Sports Digital subscribers and News Plus subscribers, or they can be viewed a day after the game at the NRC website.

Most Foxtel subscribers qualify for free Fox Sports Digital access but need to generate a new username and password.

You cannot access the streams with just your Foxtel TV login details.

To the preview…

Tonight: Greater Sydney Rams v North Harbour Rays, at Pirtek Stadium in Parramatta; 7:35pm (AEST)
The Rams get their first TV game of the 2015 NRC season, and though they sit rock bottom on the table, they have been unlucky. Three of their five losses have earned bonus points for losing by eight points or fewer. Of those three, their Round 1 loss to NSW Country and the Round 4 loss to Melbourne were by just one point.

Adding to their frustration is the fact they have the worst goal-kicking record in the competition, though winger Matt Teki kicked four from four on debut last weekend and should be first choice going forward.

Greater Sydney have made nine changes to the starting side that faced the Stars last week. Young props Cam Orr and Sam Needs start, with Jed Gillespie and Cameron Betham dropping back to the bench. Hugh Roach is back at hooker with Siliva Siliva to the bench, while Jake Douglas comes in at lock in place of Fili Tufui, who picked up a fractured leg last week. Jono Hayes is also back in at 6, with Kelly Meafua on the bench.

In the backs, Jai Ayoub is out with the versatile Paul Asquith in at flyhalf. Larry Hermens is on the wing for Brad Curtis, Jordan Hayes comes into 13, and Afa Pakalani starts his first game of the season at fullback.

North Harbour will trot out the same starting side that took on Canberra last weekend, after the Manly Marlins’ Sam Lane-Reece Hodge 10-12 combination impressed. John Porch also did well on the left wing – he has some serious jet shoes.

Rory O’Connell comes onto the bench for prop Nick Fraser, who was suspended for the rest of the NRC for punching a Viking last week. I suspect that will force a change on the Canberra bench too. Lock Ryan Melrose faces a fitness test, with the evergreen Cam Treloar to come onto the bench if he fails.

Greater Sydney
(1-15) Cameron Orr, Hugh Roach, Sam Needs, Jake Douglas, Marcus Carbone, Jono Hayes, Cohen Masson, Jed Holloway, Dewet Roos, Paul Asquith, Larry Hermens, Michael McDougall, Jordan Heyer, Matt Teki, Afa Pakalani.

Replacements: Jed Gillespie, Siliva Siliva, Cameron Betham, Will Munro, Kelly Meafua, Caleb Rech, Rohan Saifoloi, Brendan Hartmann.

North Harbour
(15-1) Hamish Angus, Michael Adams, Dennis Pili-Gaitau, Reece Hodge, John Porch, Sam Lane, Josh Holmes, Harry Rorke, Boyd Killingworth, Harry Bergelin, Ryan Melrose, Ruairidh Wilson, Alex Holmes, Luke Holmes (c), Mitch Lewis,.

Reserves: Vance Elliott, Rory O’Connor, Lawrance Hunting, Cameron Treloar, Mitch Daniel, Tim Donlan, Tom Hill, Sione Ala.

Referee: Andrew Lees

Tickets: From the Rams website and at the gate, adults from $15 and kids under 15 free.

Friday: University of Canberra Vikings v Melbourne Rising, Viking Park, Canberra; 7:30pm (AEST)
Stability is the key for the Vikings, with Robbie Abel coming back into the starting side at hooker, and Albert Anae dropping back to the bench in an otherwise unchanged pack. Rodney Iona has the week off, with James Dargaville coming back into 12, which could shift Aidan Toua to the wing and Isaac Thompson back at fullback.

Melbourne look set for another shuffle, with Tom English out injured, Luke Jones shifting to the backrow, Cruze Ah-Nau moving to tighthead, and Duncan Chubb back to the bench. The Rising are excited to start centre Sione Tuipolotu and prop Fereti Sa’aga for the first time in 2015; both are genuine Melbourne products, and are on track to become the first born-and-bred, through-the-pathways Victorians to play Super Rugby in 2016.

Excitement machine Filipe Vilitati comes onto the bench.

Teams to be announced today. Referee is Rohan Hoffmann, and the commentary comes highly recommended.

Tickets: Tickets at the gate, or via the Vikings website, Adults from just $10, kids $5.

Friday: Sydney Stars v Brisbane City at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney; 7:30pm (AEST)
Yet more changes for Sydney coach Peter Playford, who will no doubt take until the very last moment to finalise his side. One definite change is the loss of Rugby World Cup-bound hooker James Hanson, while prop Tom Robertson – who at one stage led the competition try-scoring tally – is also out, having undergone shoulder surgery. Dave Hickey is said to be itching to play, though he may also be held back until after the Stars’ bye next week, to give the extra week off. Still no word on whether Dave Dennis will return, either.

Brisbane City look set for minimal changes, coming off the bye last week. Corey Thomas comes in for lock Ben Hyne as part of Nick Stiles’ deliberate rotation of club players, while Waita Setu will again start at openside for Liam Gill. Gill was a late withdrawal in Round 5, but he’ll likely be unleashed on the Vikings next week.

Teams to be announced today. The referee is Will Houston.

Tickets: At the gate, or via the Stars website, $15 for adults, kids under 12 free.

Sunday: Perth Spirit v NSW Country Eagles at McGillivray Oval, UWA Park, Perth; 5:00pm (AEST)
Perth were really impressive last week in accounting for Melbourne, but coach Tai McIsaac is to ring the changes again. Oli Hoskins looks set to come in for a resting Tetera Faulkner, and Rory Walton replaces Adrian Hall at lock.

Ian Prior will again start at scrumhalf, and it sounds like Kyle Godwin might be having another week off. Junior Rasolea will probably shuffle in one to 12, and don’t be surprised if the impressive and versatile Ma’alonga Konelio comes into 13. Albert Nikoro is likely to be back at fullback.

The Eagles will be largely unchanged, they tell me, with coach Darren Coleman hoping to send out the same side that narrowly went down in proper ark-building weather in Newcastle last week. That said, I’m hoping there might be room for young lock Ned Hanigan, who was superb in the opening couple of rounds.

Teams to be announced today. Referee is Damien Mitchelmore.

Tickets: Available at the gate at McGillivray Oval, where the Spirit want you in big numbers to #FillTheHill. Adults $15 and kids under 16 free.

Queensland Country has the bye.

thanks brett..with every new comp, crowds fluctuate from season to season..we will have a better understanding of the wider appeal of this competition after say 3-5 years, if it's still going..which I hope it does..

Thanks again Brett. Nice report Stars started so well, but has struggled with consistency. Looking forward too the City Viking meet next week. Spirit, not so consistent. Eagles too. Rising a little better. I hoped Rams would improve. I miss Tala Grey. Well at least there's some interesting number of locks on the paddock.

Perth have named their team to host Melbourne: SPIRIT NAMED TO KEEP FINALS HOPES ALIVE The Perth Spirit will look to continue their charge towards the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) finals when they take on the NSW Country Eagles at McGillivray Oval on Sunday. The Spirit will look to take the momentum out of last week’s win against the fourth-placed Melbourne Rising, as they target their third win on the trot on Sunday. The “Pigs” welcome back Western Force prop Oliver Hoskins, who comes back into the starting front row beside Chris Heiberg and captain Heath Tessmann. Big man Rory Walton returns to the number five jersey, alongside Force teammate Ross Haylett-Petty. Ian Prior settles back into the starting nine jersey and is set to keep his exceptional goal-kicking rate standing, currently leading the competition at 94%. Solomoni Junior Rasolea moves into inside centre, while Joondalup’s Maalonga Konelio, who has been hugely impressive throughout the tournament, moves from the wing to outside centre. The Pindan Premier Grade’s leading try scorer Faamanatu Apineru, will make his Buildcorp NRC run-on debut for the Spirit. The Kalamunda product impressed off the bench last week and showed glimpses of the form that led him to 21 tries during the club season. McGillivray Oval will also be the site of a mouth-watering battle between two in-form flyhalves and future Western Force teammates in Luke Burton (Perth Spirit) and Jono Lance (NSW Country Eagles). For the first time this year the entire bench is filled with players from the Pindan Premier Grade. Head coach Tai McIsaac, showing full confidence in the club players, proving the growing depth in rugby in WA. McIsaac says it’s going to be a good battle against the Eagles and looks forward to seeing a big crowd for the last home game of the season. “Sunday is another important match for us in terms of our season. So we want to see that hill filled on Sunday.” “The Eagles have been unlucky in a few games this season, they’ve shown that they can score against the best teams. We’re going to have to be at our best if we want to take the points on Sunday.” “It’s also great to see so many Pindan Premier Grade players in the team this week. It just goes to show that there is talent in abundance here in Perth, players like Maalonga Konelio and Jermiane Ainsley continued to improve throughout the season and thoroughly deserve their places in the side. 2015 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship – Week Seven Perth Spirit v NSW Country Eagles McGillivray Oval, Mt Claremont Saturday, 26 September 2015 Kick-off: 3pm Gates Open: 11am 1. Debreczeni was unlucky (IMO) to miss out on the RWC squad. His improvement over the last year and a half with paying for both the Rebels and Rising has been mightily impressive. Will be interesting to see how he goes as captain, handling the responsibility (he's still only 22!) but I'm glad he's being given the opportunity. Reckon he'll be the superstar back of the next generation.

Godwin and Tapuai will surely not be considered for the flyhalf role. It will be Grant, Lance and the other young fella I forget the name of who had a few runs at centre and fullback this year . Not sure if Holmes is still in the picture as well. If the Force have sense, they will move Godwin back to inside centre where he played great footy for two years, and outside centre will be a battle between Brache, Rasolea and Tapuai From memory Grant is a good goalkicker.

I said January, but it was actually March that it was reported: http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/rugby/new-broadcasting-deal-ensures-future-of-national-rugby-championship-until-at-least-2020/story-fnii0ksb-1227248256811?sv=cc62b3abcc77460c15586b1448752518

Well hopefully they build on the coverage which I think has been much better this year. It's a pretty full dance card with NRL and AFL finals but especially so this year with the World Cup in rugby. Conversions back to 2 points...

Fox Sports have bought the rights to domestic rugby through to the end of 2020 - that was announced back in about January. So I'd reckon the NRC is safe, but that's not to say there might not be a few tweaks here and there over the next five years..

At least the venues are better suited to the crowd sizes. I would be surprised if the Stars remain at Leichhardt oval now that Sydney Uni have a dedicated rectangular oval (what a contradiction) with stand and all. They'll get better crowds at the university.

Completely agree that the NRC is an important step Brett, perhaps the most important. It's one thing to get a position in a Super team but it's another thing entirely to go from club rugby straight to a run against some of the world's best. The NRC is a perfect level to bridge the gap and provide a high level of experience for those guys. Knowing that the NRC was only guaranteed for two years , Brett do you have any inkling of what the future holds for the comp?

Yeah, good question Terry. I have been keeping track of crowds, too, and that's probably the one disappointment of the 2015 NRC. Where last season, the average finished around 2000, in 2015 it's been travelling at around 1500 throughout. Some teams like Qld Country and North Harbour have had stronger crowds, while others like the Rams, NSW Country, and Melbourne have been well down. The clubs have been doing as much promotion as they can, and the ARU have stepped things up as well, so it's a shame that that's the case. Hopefully, now that the other codes are finishing up, and the sun's coming out again, we might see a boost over the last month of the comp..
