State of the Game: National Rugby League

By StatMan / Roar Rookie

As someone who loves sport, I’ve been considering for a while to contribute to The Roar to express my sporting opinion.

Instead I’ve decided to combine my two interests of sport and statistics to develop a survey about the state of various sporting codes – from everything such as rule changes, media rights to stadium construction, admission fees and competition expansion.

I am not an expert on all sports but have watched every Olympic/Paralympic sport by dedicating those few weeks every two years to learn more about each and every summer & winter Olympic/Paralympic sport. Sometimes the recognised IOC sports gain my interest too.

So as I develop these surveys (which I hope are engaging and successful), if there is a question you are interested in being asked or you would like to nominate a sporting code that I do not normally cover (due to lack of knowledge), feel free to let me know! There is an opportunity to at the end of the surveys.

But for now, I’ve started with the sport I’ve known the longest – rugby league and in particular, the National Rugby League. Its 2015 season has just finished with one of the greatest grand finals ever and with the sudden departure of CEO David Smith, here I will let you provide a way to give your verdict on the ‘state of the game’.

I have put nearly 40 questions in the survey – given it’s the first one I’ve produced, if an important issue is missing, let me know in the end of survey opportunity or if an error occurs during the survey, just kindly draw it to my attention in the comments below.

Even if you do not follow National Rugby League, participate in the survey. You will have fewer questions to answer but your input is just as valued. Survey results will be published in a few weeks to a month. Thanks for your time and I hope my first survey is satisfactory!

Disclaimer: The Roar is not the collector of the survey data. By engaging in this survey your answers will be given to the author of this article.

Fellas, the NRL needs a makeoever across the board. We need new commentators - Gould, Warren are grizzled unfunny unpizzaz guys. They are not excitement nor enjoyment! We need better player behaviour - players constantly in the news for shocking or gross things. It. Must. Stop! We need a slightly shorter season - crowds are down for 3 yrs in a row - why? An oversupply of games. Make it a national game - we need a grand final in Brisbane even though Suncorp is too small. 55k??? Thats poverty! Speaking of poverty - stop taking games to crap venues. Sydneysiders are rich and like to be treated properly. Stop going to Campbelltown or Leichhardt or similar holes. Put the game in a good timeslot, charge a good (not cheap) ticket prices and u will get a full house! The NRL has so much potential! Its a shame its losing (slowly) to the AFL and soccer.

Again, locked out because the iPad won't sweep L or R. This time locked to the R. Hopefully your next one will have the bugs fixed. SP

Need to bring back all 3 grades on the game day and get rid of the 20s. Just first, 2nd grade and thirds with at least a minimum of 7 players 20 or younger. Other than that nrl is superb and. Even though I'm a doggies fan it's great to see the different clubs win every year. It keeps the fire burning for another premiership. They also should a bigger deal out the minor premiership winner. Maybe top 9 and they get 2 chances to make the gf

Sorry mate, I found the survey to be puzzling. Not sure what it was trying to achieve.

Great work, had to stop halfway through at the pricing questions as the website is not exactly mobile phone friendly and you can't see nor access the answers that are spread across a wide angle range Likewise if you scroll too far down in an answer category and want to go back up, the whole page would go up but the answers you scrolled past would not be available again. One for the web team of the roar really. My phone is a Nokia Lumia if the team wish to investigate and improve.
