City just another game for old boss Aloisi

By News / Wire

Whatever sentiment John Aloisi had left for the A-League club formerly known as Melbourne Heart vanished when they were taken over by Manchester City.

Aloisi will coach against his old side for the first time on Friday night when his Brisbane Roar hosts Melbourne City at Suncorp Stadium.

So much has changed since Aloisi was unceremoniously sacked by the Heart in December 2013, on the back of a woeful 17-match winless streak.

Widely written off as a coach back then, Aloisi now finds himself top of the table, having guided his side to four wins in six games, and back in the good graces of A-League fans.

Yet for Melbourne City, things remain ever the same – despite a total rebrand, a new multi-million dollar headquarters and all the trimmings that come with being a part of the City Football Group empire, they are still maddeningly inconsistent.

Indeed, another bad result in Brisbane would pile even further pressure on Aloisi’s successor in Melbourne, John van ‘t Schip.

“Really, the people that owned the club are no longer there – the City Group’s there, I wasn’t there with them,” Aloisi said on Thursday morning.

“My focus has always been on Brisbane Roar since I’ve signed here and every week, we prepare the same.”

Aloisi’s only remaining ties to City are in players like Ben Garruccio or Stefan Mauk, who he originally handed their A-League debuts.

“Unless you’re there day in, day out, you don’t know what happens within a football club. I can’t really comment,” he said when asked for his view on City’s form issues.

“All I can say is if you allow them to play, they can play. They’ve got some really good players.”

Aloisi said he didn’t have any special plans for arguably the A-League’s best player, Aaron Mooy, who will return from Socceroos duty and slot straight back into the City midfield, or their “electric” frontman Bruno Fornaroli.

Fullback Ivan Franjic is in line for a possible appearance against his old club, although City coach van ‘t Schip was coy when asked about his chances.

The Roar will receive their own boost with captain Matt McKay, in-form striker Jamie Maclaren and left-back Corey Brown all back from international commitments – although Aloisi said he won’t decide on his starting side until the morning of the match.

“They look sharp. Whoever I start, I’m sure they’ll do the job. I’ve got no worries about that,” he said.

STATS THAT MATTER

* Brisbane have scored in all of their home league clashes with Melbourne City, averaging two goals a game (W5 D1 L2).

* City won all three of their encounters with the Roar last season, only conceding one goal.

* Brisbane are looking to keep four consecutive clean sheets for the first time since September 2010.

Stevo -When you say JA doesn't have to do much with this team you are actually showing up a lack of comprehension on what a coach's job is,for, as there is no such a thing as a "perfect" team the "coach" of any team always has to be looking at where he can improve things whether on the field or off it, So you see JA has got to do something every time he watches his "charges" for, though they may win a game ,there are always flaws to be noted and fixed. Cheers jb

lol. That's football alright. City have won 6 out of the last 9 meetings, Roar 3, and no draws. I'm thinking the universe is about to start evening things up = a draw.

I'll say it again. JA doesn't have to do too much with this team. He's recruited well with Maclaren and Corona and he has an established group that has experienced winning silverware. The winning style was established under Ange so just let them play. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. That would be the smart thing to do. As for my team, I'll be watching with my hands over my eyes, occasionally peering between fingers :)

lol. Yes it was cut n paste but even then a blogger called Mr. Brisbane did all the hard work and I just stole his efforts. I did end up posting it multiple times because the very first post with the full transcript didn't appear so I assumed it was too long so did the 10+ subsequent posts. Two hours later the original long post appears :) arghhh ... But yes, Alois's "I'm not a Dr" answer was perfect and reflects just how relaxed he's become in the role. The fans on the night loved him and he is incredibly articulate and straight talking. He's going to be good for us no matter where we end up this season.

Waz, hope that was all a quick cut and paste for you and you didn't type it all out. Judging by the comment times looks like the former. Saw a bit of this on Twitter. From above I liked this one - How far away is Theo? JA: I'm not a doctor.

Thanks. It wasn't detailed in the Twitter feed here but the FFA changed the rules on the international club friendlies after LFC, Chelsea, Spurs etc last winter. They liked what they saw so raised the minimum HAL participation fee to $500k so each club gets at least that amount although they can negotiate higher if they're able. I assume the FFA still get their $250k but that wasn't mentioned. Bottom line is the FFA want to encourage more of these games as a way of increasing individual club revenues.

You're welcome. It was a good forum. Sort of "back to normal" almost; JA has clearly earned his stripes and had total respect from the audience, and not just over the start to the season but in the way he handles himself. Put Dec 6th in your diary, that'll be the fan open day - a venue to be confirmed but "somewhere with lots of parking" was hinted at, probably QSAC rather than Perry Park?

Af the first forum there were 100 fans, the second 140 and on Wednesday 50, which reflects the anger dissipating I suspect. That's three forums in three months plus a meeting with The Den in between. The next fan event is on December 6th which will be a fan forum/fan day in lieu of the season kick off event. Details tba.

Q- Are our players always going to be dirt cheap on transfer market? DP- It's an open market. It's hard to define worth, it's up to that club. DP- We want to produce the next million dollar player. We're working towards that. That is the goal. Q- Can we suggest that the non-playing players come and interact with members on game day? DP- Players have commitments to see corporates and sponsors on game day. DP- They are also out on the south plaza before kick off for 30 minutes. Q- TripleM are showing great support. Do we have a deal with them? JA doing weekly interviews but mainly building on the brand. DP- We have a deal with them. Their support is great. Ed loves football, they are a good fit. Ed is passionate, he pushed TripleM. No other station really wanted to push for us. DP- We're trying to engage broader too. @TheCrazyBull is an example. A great supporter to have. DP- @TheCrazyBull is a fan. It's not an act.

Q- Did we make money from Liverpool? DP- 'Profit' there was money in. But we were in a bad state so it wasn't a windfall. Q- Video to promote Cairns with Jack Hingert was great. Are there more? Is it going well? DP- The Cairns games was due to concerts and relaying pitch after. DP- We have a great plan to properly engage that community. We will be there early to actually give back. DP- There are more promos coming. Including features of Jack. DP- We've engaged a local ad agency to show our commitment to the region. Q- What are owners plans post January when debts are paid? DP- We are continuing conversations with them about the future. The reps moving here will be good for future. DP- Two big things for us are training venue and academy Q- Liverpool game. We need to do better with tickets for members and prices. DP- That game was one off. Liverpool controlled that game with stadium and Ticketek. DP- Other stakeholders had objectives. Eg, Restrictions on avails so tourists could come in DP- There are lessons for all parties and feedback given.

Q- What is the clubs position on Wellington Phoenix? DP- There are bigger things at play. We're supportive of them, but it's between FFA and WP. We have other focusses Q- What do you think of agents? DP- I take guidance from John and Craig. I'm not an expert on dealing with them. DP - Majority do a good job. But there are some who don't have high standards of operation DP- There needs to be greater governance of agents Q- In September we were told players were owed money and had until January. Are we on track? DP- The owners have made commitments and a timeline. They are meeting that. There are many stakeholders DP- In May, the list of creditors was very large. It's now a lot smaller. It's down and still going down. DP- Owners have followed with the plan and everything is on track. Q- We've been to many games away that are great. Are there plans to look at something start of game? (song) DP- We're looking at options

DP- We track all sales 2 weeks out. We've been surprised by the numbers so far this year. DP- We're doing what we can to improve things with crowds/members. Bit by bit. DP- You would have started to see small ads showing on different platforms. Q- You're still Interim-CEO. Why is that? Are you holding off? Are you not seeing signs from owners? DP- We're working through contracts. They want me, but I want to make sure it's right. DP- Simply. If the owners don't meet their commitments, they're gone. They know that. DP- The owners are supporting the club. So we (the staff) have to support them. Q- Is the stadium working with us to help break even on games? Rumour is 15k is the line. DP- There are costs outside of just the stadium. Eg, transport, etc. DP - First two games were fantastic. We are about even overall. DP- We are working with the stadium on things to bring people in. They are open to it and willing

Q- Have you seen sufficient change at the club recently? In the positive direction. JA- Yes, player wages are sorted. The owners reps have been in contact. They are here to see things JA- From when I arrived to now, there has been huge change. We have stabilised. We are moving along well. Q- Thoughts on FFA Cup? JA- It's a great idea. Victory deserve to win that comp. Strange in pre-season for us to adjust JA- it's getting better and better. Everyone is learning. Clubs will adjust and it will get better. DP- We aren't actually that far behind full season ticket holders. DP- The way it was calculated in the past wasn't 100% correct. DP- In the past, there were little additions. We're on the right track. We are still working to improve.

Q- Do you see Clut/Broich being a combo in the future? Thoughts on his development? JA- Clut is great young player. Im looking to see how all players fit in a structure. Q- What is Craig Moore's role? Coaching or other JA- He works on what is happening with the football department. What players do media, contracts, runs meetings Q- How do you think the draw will effect us? Is it good for us back end? I looked at first 5 games and set a plan. We've done okay getting through it. JA- We have a lot of home games end of season. It gives us chance to finish strong. Q- Expecting a big crowd in Cairns? JA- Really looking forward to it. Stef is from there, they have great participation. JA- It's a bit unknown, but I know they are keen up there. It will be great Q- Does the league need (big name) marquees? Does BR need one? JA- Do we need one. Not really. Thomas and Bes were unknown but bring value. They bring excitement in other ways. JA- The league is exciting enough. Media would say we do, but games are exciting enough. JA- Our game against Wellington. Two teams just going at each other. Everyone commented on it
