Cooper uninspiring in heavy Toulon defeat

By Jack O'Toole / Roar Guru

After impressing in his Top 14 debut against Montpelier a fortnight ago, Quade Cooper had a forgettable night at the RICOH Arena as Toulon were thumped 32-6 by Wasps in Pool 5 of the Champions Cup.

Bad passes, failed restarts, missed tackles – all the hallmarks of a staple Quade Cooper poor performance were on show as Toulon were outmuscled, outwitted and outplayed by a Wasps side that earned a well-deserved bonus point win to go top of the pool.

After demolishing Leinster last weekend at the RDS, Wasps got off to a scintillating start as fly-half Ruaridh Jackson sent Nathan Hughes crashing over in the corner before embarking on a brilliant solo effort just a minute later.

Jackson made something from nothing with a superb chip over the Toulon defence, and after some nice interplay with lock James Gaskell, the Scottish five-eighth raced clear untouched to add the hosts’ second try in quick succession.

Jackson’s try set the tone for the evening as the Wasps’ primary playmaker largely outpointed Cooper for the majority of a very one-sided game. The former Glasgow Warrior was composed, calculated and played within his means to guide his team around the park.

Jackson benefited from a strong performance from halves partner Joe Simpson, who provided quick, clean ball. Simpson and Jackson combined well and are developing a steady understanding for the Londoners.

While Jackson and Simpson’s chemistry is still in its embryonic stages in the absence of Jimmy Gopperth, former Auckland Blues outside backs Frank Halai and Charles Piutau demonstrated their familiarity with one and other as the former combined brilliantly with the latter to finish off a scintillating long-range try.

Hughes secured the bonus point late on, benefitting from a strong Wasps maul to score his second try of the game.

James Haskell and George Smith were also strong for the hosts, but it was late replacement Gaskell who proved the difference for Dai Young’s side – the 25-year-old was immense in the absence of Bradley Davies.

While Cooper was poor for the visitors, he was not the only member of the star-studded Toulon side who failed to fire. Steffon Armitage, Bryan Habana and Matheiu Bastareaud were all far from their best, with Armitage hooked 20 minutes from time for the much-needed Duane Vermeulen.

The lumbering South African number 8 added some spark for the visitors, but it was too little too late as Wasps cruised home.

The loss sees Toulon move into fourth place with a game to play, after last weekend’s fixture with Bath was postponed.

#10s die like flies in the big matches. QC has been out with shoulder injuries for much of this year. Stephen Donald had to be dragged out of a river somewhere to win the 2011 world cup. Barrett, Cruden, Carter, Toomua etc are always getting injured. QC should look after himself in defence. The old Carlos Spencer BS comparison has been round for years- give it rest please.

my constant go to?? ironic coming from the guy who loves his stats and just comments ad nausem.. if there is an article with a picture of cooper in it, a headline with cooper or a negative referal to the guy.. you will be there tapping away on your keyboard defending him... as for explaining where you go ott on the guy, that boat has sailed mate.. many a person has tried to show you of your ways there but you just fob them off as attacking the guy personally.. heck you must of been one of heck of player or coach to be so sure that everyone else who has a different view or opinion of the guys play to you is wrong.. anyways.. i am getting off the twas train.. for about a year i have been reading your endless responses to cooper issues.. heck the guy is in europe now and yet still you are in his shadow.. no doubt you will continue.. enjoy, fill your boots..boring everyone out of a discussion will probably lead you to think that you are right..

mate just back and saw your reply.. apologies for the delay.. miss is a miss.. that is what twas and stats are all about no? so 1) he missed. covering or not.. he missed the tackle. 2) he fell off the tackle.. irrelevant about anything else.. it is not a completed tackle. if that is a successful completion of a tackle, then i can´t say anything more.. 3) this i agree maybe a wee bit harsh on the lad, but having been a full back all my unillustrious career, i know a bit about this one.. he did not handle it well and if he had some of my ex-coaches he would have copped a spray for it.. 4) he was there in that channel.. he was responsible for making the tackle. he didn´t. he missed. should there have been a piggie there to help him, of course, but there wasn´t, doesn´t dismiss that he was there, therefore his channel and he missed. the stats are continously thrown out there by a couple of prolific commenters as being indisputable.. i am just showing that there were 3 missed tackles (will let the no show at fullback go for sake of moving on) in a 3 and half minute highlight reel, when he supposedly missed just two in the whole game?? and if people think that there were no more than that in the game, so be it.. but there was.. personally remember being amazed when twas kept going on about foley missing so many tackles in the wc.. but when i was watching i couldn´t remember there being anywhere near that number.. and just assumed that his beloved espn was a very, very harsh judger of missed tackles.. i guess espn has various persons doing the stats etc.. and maybe some of those people are cooper fans.. who knows maybe even twas is moonlighting as the stat accumulater at espn, and giving his page plenty of plugs!! ;)

RO Yes, he and his family did seek assurances but at the end of the day, it is all about choices. Following on from that consultation, they have decided to continue with their France experience after being reassured, that all will be OK. There is nothing disingenuous about having a discussion and then a choice, because in the end, the final choice/decision, is the important issue, don't you think? I don't think Carter would be fair to himself if he continued on this excursion knowing full well, that he may have second thoughts about his family's safety. He and his family would need to be most assured that all is going to be OK so that when they depart, his only concern will be, playing rugby.

Because it's nothing to do with the discussion. It's pointless because you just use it to share your view, that is based on nothing to do with the comment you are responding to. Does the quantity of comments i have made change their validity? That's your constant go to. "Oh you comment so much". Considering I seldom instigate discussion, perhaps that's more a reflection on the unjust dislike people have, always looking for a reason to stick the boot in. If my comments are disputable, then by all means explain where you consider I'm wrong.

"i dont even know if he played well this game overall let alone the next" Aww I dunno soapit I reckon if anybody could tell us about his next game it would be you. Why you'd probably be able to tell us how well he played for the entire season. We'll fill in the details later.

Old Bugger, I see recently that Dan Carter sought assurances regarding his and his families safety in Paris. To suggest that the situation isn't playing on the minds of the players would be disingenuous.

Actually Cp is a right wing and lost out to naholo because he lacked xfactor, it's as simple as that. Yeah he played well in those 3 tests, but there was something missing he was being read very well.

1st, yes he was covering. 12 missed the tackle orignally and cooper came over to cover. thats what cover means in rugby. not sure how you think it isnt. not important tho as we agree its a miss . 2nd, he 'slid off' as the guy went to ground at his feet. i dont think they count efforts where the guy is let go at the end of an attempt to throw him to the ground as a missed tackle when that attempt ends up with him going to ground immediately, regardless of whether contact is made. perhaps this is one area where the people that do the stats differ from you and why their numbers are lower assuming theyre not just quade lovers) 3rd. i would think most decent club backs should be able to take advantage of a 2 on 1 like that no matter who is defending it but although i think cooper made reasonable decision on how to try and stop the try and 'fullbacks' are always damned if you do and damned if you dont in those circumstances im not going to argue that point. fact is its not a missed tackle no matter how unhappy you are with what he did so we can also take that one out from your original assessment. 4th disagree its his channel, or at least wasnt a split second before and you seem to be expecting instantaneous reaction to the gap that suddenly appeared. happy to chalk it up s a miss for arguments sake i think i did above?) but i wouldnt be surprised if the stats people didnt and you are being unreasonable to complain about a 10 not making that tackle in those circumstances. really seems very much like your only using the one eye to watch him im afraid. to be clear thats all im saying. i;m NOT saying that quade is the greatest tackler in most teams and doesnt make errors or misses as even from your 4 "examples" theres at least one where he actually does miss and at least another where he could have made a better hit . still i think he does a good enough job enough of the time to still be a good 10. if he doesnt improve to johnny wilkinson standards tho he probably wont hit the absolute heights tho.

twas.. how many comments have you made for cooper over the past year.. would it be 4 digits? as you say numbers are indisputable.. why is my comment pointless? just because it is my opinion of your fascination with cooper? i watched the game live.. like i do when i can for games up here because i am in the same timezone.. i want the guy to succeed, don´t know the guy personally, so can´t, never will make a personal call on the guy, unlike others players (well ex-now) i know and have played with or against.. we need more oz players playing well than badly.. what gets tedious is this belief that he is better than he actually is.. he is inconsistent, he does the odd good thing and every now and then he does an amazing thing (next to never now, compared to 2011), but he also does very basic bad things.. pressure is something that even after nearly 60 tests he is still cracking, not the odd time, but on a consistently regular basis.. as for mermoz.. you were endlessly rabbiting on about foley not unleashing a backline.. here mermoz was passed the ball 6 times and suddenly it was all mermoz´s fault.. but this time it was cooper doing exactly the same as foley was doing in the world cup to tk, but now it is outside players fault..

soappit.. just seen your reply so will answer.. first one was not covering.. it is a tackle.. he missed.. second one went in with arms and slid off.. therefore missed tackle third one he got caught out at the back.. he let the play come to him and in the end did nothing.. no pressure, no putting doubt on the attacking players mind, no reducing the attacking players options.. as you said 2 on 1, but cooper made it an easy draw and pass scenario.. all basic stuff that any club fullback will try to do.. he was defending at full back so defend like a full back. 4th he got steamrolled.. it was his channel.. he was there.. therefore a missed tackle

Most importantly nobody has ever blamed a coach to defend any shortcoming by Quade Cooper.

Thats all I want, an end to all the deflection and denial and acceptance of reality. Sadly, thats asking a bit much it seems. Bernard Foleys fans checklist. Bad game: 1) Blame QLD 2) Blame Quade 3) Just pretend he was good. 4) Make excuses about his lack of gametime at 10 as to why he has had only 1 try assist in 10 games in 2015. 2015 TEST year ,10 games Not Bothered credited Bernard for 7 wins The 3 losses were not credited to Bernard by Not Bothered as the forwards were terrible and Quade was playing Uruguay game was the best game team game we saw and was credited to Foley by Not Bothered.. A pattern seems to be developing.

RO On the contrary - just as long as there is a choice for players to play or not to play then there should be no excuse if your side, is on the receiving end of a thrashing, if they chose to play. The NZ cricket team have cancelled tour(s) because, they had a choice to play, or not. It isn't a difficult decision if the feedback information justifies, such action.

Exactly. Generalisations. Most don't bother to look at the facts Somebody was blaming Cooper for the Reds poor form in 2012 and 2013. They made the finals. How can that be considered poor? They have been poor in 2014 (Cooper played 12 games) and 2015 (Cooper played 4 games) when Cooper has missed 50% of the games across the 2 seasons.

Interesting view of the world you have their Oldie. I guess in a world like yours the Aussie cricket team would never cancel a tour to Bangladesh either.

Right so whatever is going on is your head we should take as a fact regardless of how well it correlates to reality. How about you give us your thoughts on how well Cooper played in his next game too ?
