Fremantle fan jailed for assaulting off-duty police officer

By The Roar / Editor

24-year-old AFL fan, Cody Yarran, has been sentenced to eight months in jail for assaulting an off-duty police officer during a 2015 preliminary final between the Hawthorn Hawks and Fremantle at Subiaco Oval in Perth.

The assault, which was captured on video by a nearby member of the crowd and posted to social media, took place after an off-duty police officer confronted Yarran regarding his disorderly behaviour.

Yarran then proceeded to hit the 38-year-old female in the throat.

Speaking outside court following the sentence, the victim stated that Yarran had threatened to beat her and her children after she had asked him to stop scaring hers and other children in the vicinity.

She also stated that the incident had had a big impact on her children.

“My 13-year-old son feels like he should have done more, which is really sad for him,” she said.

“My eight-year-old stepdaughter feels that she can’t go in public into large crowds, she’s very nervous and anxious.

“It was unfair that everybody else’s experience of the football had to be ruined because of the behaviour of one.”

Yarran pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour, common assault and two counts of obstructing public officers, but his defence argued his behaviour was impacted by a distressed state caused by the recent loss of his father, with who he often attended Fremantle games.

The prosecution pushed for a jail term, arguing it would send a clear message regarding violence against women.

How do you know that the drunkard wanted to assault him?

Who are you to tell me what I can and can't discuss Andy? I get your point but it's dangerous and inappropriate to start telling people what they can talk about yet that's exactly what is happening and people think nothing of it. You're right about the UK and to a lesser extent some other EU influences as they also control Amercia but I thought that it might be going too deep and over people's heads which is why I omitted it. America is where one can see the policies being manifested quicker than anywhere else in the world but the EU, and to a lesser extent Australia and the west isn't that far behind them which was my point.

Misbehaving Hawthorn players, that night, outnumbered misbehaving Freo fans.

So I take it you disagree with bringing up Hawthorn part, but not the malicious fabrication part?

If he had a prior then he got what he deserved regardless of who he hit.

"You’re the first one to mention Hawthorn andyl12" Um, how so?

You're the first one to mention Hawthorn andyl12, as an attempted deflection from your malicious fabrication I'm guessing.

Keep hearing what you choose to hear DC. It's pretty obvious you have a vendetta against Hawthorn and our success, or you wouldn't be rambling on like this given how wrong you are.

Lame andyl12. I watched the replay a couple of times already (direct from the AFL), once specifically to watch out for Brad Hill possessions and see if there was any skerrick of booing and guess what? There was nada, zilch, none. The closest I could find was a bit of residual jeers aimed at Mitchell when he gave off a short pass to Hill.

I think it's incumbent on you to show evidence andyl12, the most obvious, glaring one is you repeatedly pushing that fable about Brad Hill being booed in the prelim. Balt I'm not really expecting anything of any quality from andyl12, he's generally just ghoul's around the place really.

Hi Council, assuming that you were replying to my post, not sure I get the point. I was replying to Jax's post where he stated "Cops are protected and the system is corrupt and malleable. Not condoning his actions but I am questioning the seemingly harsh penalty, the severity of the palm he gave her and the decision of the cop to confront him in the first place and get in his face. Cops are known to over-react and take matters into their own hands".

Dalgety: I don't know why you argue with him... this is also the bloke who thinks Fyfe "deserved" a broken leg because he is a head hunter. Rick: "249 road fatalities last year. Victorians are a disgrace to the nation and should admit to being rubbish drivers. Get your sh4t together people!" Hilarious.
