Mick Fanning has endured unimaginable emotional anguish this week at the Pipeline Masters after learning of his brother’s death just yesterday.
The newly crowned World Surfing Champion, Adriano de Souza, had some truly touching words for the Aussie champion in a moving post-competition interview.
Fanning went down to Gabriel Medina in the semi-finals of the prestigious competition, clearing the way for de Souza to claim the Championship with a semi-final win himself.
The Brazilian defeated Mason Ho, and with that win, claimed his maiden World Title.
However, rather than beating his chest, de Souza’s first priority was paying a touching tribute to the three-time world champion.

Got to agree that this bloke is a one in a million. Incredible competitor/athlete and more importantly, seems like a fair dinkum sort of fella. Good work White lightning

Probably makes sense that he didn't win the whole thing. In a contest where normal people compete in the water for a title Mick doesn't really meet the criteria. He is not a normal person. He is a super human freak. There are boxers who don't get off the canvas like this legend. Absolutely incredible. Well done on an amazing year Mr Fanning. Sorry that we will all remember it differently to you
