FINA has let every single swimmer down

By Beardan / Roar Guru

A mark of a great Olympian is how many gold medals they win. To break a world record in the process further enhances their greatness.

In this regard, the sport of swimming has let itself down.

At the 2009 world championships in Rome, a total of 43 world records were broken. It was partly due to the swimmers talents, but largely due to the technology of the swim suits they were wearing.

In 2015, 16 of swimmings 40 world records still stand from those World championships.

Although women’s swimming hasn’t been overly affected, its a different tale for the men.

Since 2009, only five men’s world records have been broken since 2009. On average less than one a year.

Compare this to the Rome meet where 17 world records were broken in less than two weeks. An average of more than one a day.

It was unacceptable for such dramatic reductions in times to occur, and then for the technology to disappear as quickly as it came.

Was anyone at FINA held responsible? Some of these records will stand well into the 2020s.

Like women sprinters chasing the highly dubious Flo Jo sprint records, highly talented swimmers will be chasing some unfair records in the future.

FINA owes them all an apology.

I think the two questions you asked sums it up for me. Maybe sport isn't your thing. Keep reading kid, you may eventually learn something.

I just read your football articles. They were a great laugh, especially your attempts to defend yourself against people that know football

And you could buy some lessons on how to research and write a decent article. Unfortunately by your comments you seem to have the idea that you know what you are doing. This article only made a "little" but of sense. Looking forward to you defending your brilliance in 2016 Do world records need to be consistently broken? They don't happen so much in other sports?

Fiddlesticks is right though. Is it your intention to provoke Click bait with articles like this? Or even the resounding masterpiece that was the culture of failure in the NRL? It's not my intention to knock your writing ability, more that I'm knocking your laziness to present a well argued, rational piece on subjects you seem keen on. I admire your chutzpah in giving it a go. If only I had the ability I'd have a go myself. Good luck in getting into the one hundred responses club ;-)

You've just given it me then said the article made sense. It's a bit like saying you don't like AFL then sitting through an entire match. You've confused yourself. Don't listen to the uneducated people like Dustby. They lack sporting intelligence so just disagree to sound smart. You can't buy sporting intelligence, if you could, they would be at the shop right now.

Hardly blamed Chappelli for everything, I pointed the finger at him for introducing a culture of non walking. That's hardly everything son.

Keep reading Pat, some sense may eventually kick in if you do. However if I'm honest with you I highly doubt it.

Beardan- you certainly have found the secret to getting hits and replies on the roar. Write an unresearched opinion piece that makes no sense and waiting for arguments. Then continue to try and defend yourself like digging out of a hole At least in this article you make a little bit of sense

I'm still waiting for tiger woods to apologise and the NRL for failing to give me a repeat winner. Then FINA can apologise

Was anyone at FINA held responsible? This just sounds like someone who knows little of what actually went on and wants to blame someone. Poor writing- no answers just wanting to blame someone without knowing the real story Saying that keep writing- I love reading your comments defending your pieces You will not admit defeat, it appears in this article you may have finally found someone agree with you As poorly researched as your Chappell article blaming him for everything

How sad is Pat, even on Christmas, maybe he got a book on sport for Christmas. Yes most swimming fans despises those records. The 400 metres we stoked from Thorpey by a few hundreds of a second. The current WR holder has not got within 2 seconds of Thorpeys swim in 2001 without those swimsuits.

He's right on this. There should at least be an asterisk next to the WRs set with the suits. Poor analogy with FloJo though. She did it through doping, not equipment. Not disputing her WRs are a joke. The women's 100, 200, 400, 800 & 1500 records plus the 100 & 400 hurdles were all done by heavily doped athletes. Your comment on broom stick putters is off the mark. Anyone could use them, and they weren't setting WRs.

I don't know Pat. The excuse culture of the NRL was pretty "special." Have a nice day roarers.

my new years wish is that Beardan spends his time doing something oher than writing ill informed and pointless articles. This one is up there with the Tiger Woods apology but not quite in the class of the excuses culture in the NRL Should everyone that won a golf tournament with the broomstick putter give them their money back?
