Australia vs West Indies highlights: Third Test – Day 5 cricket scores, blog

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

A better forecast for Thursday could allow some cricket to be played in the third and the final Test between Australia and the West Indies. You can follow all the action of the final day at the Sydney Cricket Ground from 10am (AEDT).

After the second successive day’s play was washed away by incessant rain, the game is all over bar the shouting. West Indies are stuck at 7/248 in their first innings, and unless there’s a flurry of declarations and forfeitures, the match looks certain to be doomed to a certain draw.

It’s tough to see what can be achieved even if there’s any play on the final day.

It will, obviously, need no further rain but what also needs to be seen is if the outfield is dry enough to resume play. Despite a decent drainage facility, the ground has taken a beating from this rain and it will be interesting to see if cricket can be played as soon as the rain stops.

What the two teams could look to do is to get their limited-overs specialists a chance bat or bowl, depending on their specialty. David Warner bats in a limited-overs mode anyway, but Steven Smith might consider promoting himself to the number three spot and also have Mitchell Marsh bat up the order.

West Indies will want their lower-order to wag a bit more and add to the Australian frustration but will then also want their bowlers to go flat out when it’s their chance. The weather, even if doesn’t rain, can be expected to remain overcast and that could aid their efforts.

You can follow the live scores and a blog of this final day of the Australia versus West Indies third Test from 10am (AEDT) on Thursday and post your comments in the section below.

So there you go, Warner has won the man-of-the-match award, Voges is the man-of-the-series as the West Indies Test series finally ends. That will be that from me for this Test. Will be back for the five-match ODI series against India which begins from next Tuesday with the first game to be played at the WACA in Perth. India also play a couple of warm-up games in Perth tomorrow and day-after. You can also follow me on Twitter @suneerchowdhary for regular cricketing updates. Have a good day ahead.

David Warner's century becomes the talking point of the day and the match too and should probably win him the man-of-the-match award, ahead of the two spinners, Lyon & O'Keefe. But who wins the man-of-the-series prize? Voges? Lyon?

And that's that, end of the game. Australia declare and with two overs subtracted from the remaining ones, it's called off. Australia win the series 2-0.

Peter Nevill gets his first bat of the series, promoted up to number four. Opens his account with a couple down to deep square before a glance down to fine-leg gets him three more. 2/164 in the 33rd

Four! Wicket at the other end but Warner's not going to stop playing his shots as he pulls Brathwaite through mid-wicket for a four. Moves up to 112 with a single.

Gone! Marsh has been sent back... ...Marsh was clearly struggling against Warrican and this time he tries to play an ugly heave across the line. Gets a top-edge and is caught by the lone slip. Australia two down.

Kraigg Brathwaite is brought in and dropped! Full-toss and Warner had hammered it straight to short cover where Holder puts it down. 1/54 in 31.

Century for Warner! Taken just 82 balls to get there and he gets there with a sweep. Three to fine-leg and it's his first ever against West Indies. The quickest century at the SCG too. He celebrates it with his customary jump and a look up to the heavens. 1/144 in 28.

Couple of runs, tucked away to deep square-leg, takes Warner to 98. And then a drive down to long-on to one short of the ton. 1/140 in the 28th

Shot, four. Short of length from Brathwaite, and he has packed a punch pulling it between deep square-leg and fine-leg. 1/137 in the 27th

The man-of-the-series in this and every subsequent Frank Worrell Trophy will be awarded a Richie Benaud Medal. In the meantime, Warner, 94, has gone down the track but only managed to get an edge that falls short of the slip fielder. A single next ball takes him to 95. 1/132 in 26.

Just that first ball single for Warner in that Brathwaite over. Marsh, for now, is happy to push it around and get his eye in. 1/127 in 25.

There was a ball remaining in the Warrican over and Marsh sees it off. Brathwaite will continue from the other end and Warner pushes the first one through the covers for a single. Ticks up to 91. 1/127 in the 25th

Here we go then. Back in after the break and a minimum of 25 overs remain today.

I actually hoped that Australia played against the Windies and not India, or at least a triangular series. I think the Windies would have been more competitive in the shorter formats.
