Melbourne Victory vs Brisbane Roar: A-League live scores, highlights

By The Roar / Editor

Melbourne Victory will be looking to secure a much-needed scalp when they host the Brisbane Roar on Friday night. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:40pm (AEDT).

Tonight’s fixture is poised to be a high-quality affair, as last season’s champions host the top of the table Brisbane Roar.

Both teams have been in strong form leading into this match, Brisbane not having suffered a loss since going down to the Wanderers in Round 9, and Victory keeping their loss column clear since Round 11.

It was close to a different story for the Victory last round however, after they just scraped home with a 3-3 draw against the Mariners, thanks for an injury time goal to Besart Berisha.

Brisbane also enter this match coming off a scoreless draw against Wellington.

In that match the Roar were clearly missing the firepower up front of duo Jamie Maclaren and Brandon Borrello. They will once again be without the pair tonight, making it hard to see how they will outdo Victory in attack.

Added to this is the Roar’s underwhelming road form against Victory – they have only won one and drawn three of their last six.

Can Brisbane make a statement in Melbourne, or will the reigning champs keep edging closer to the top four?

Join The Roar for live scores of Victory versus Roar from 7:40pm (AEDT) to find out.

Fair enough JB, but when I look at three of those goals I can only conclude Roar played badly. Passing the ball in front of goal to the opposition? Desperate passing to retain possession within shooting range for your opponent? I really can't bear to look at them all again, but we made plenty of mistakes. I'm not taking anything away from MV, but they leapt all over our mistakes.

Lionheart- Roar didn't play badly, they were simply outthought, outrun, outgunned, and outplayed all around the field. So my friend if you admit that, the next phase is how is the team going to be improved, for there is some talent in the squad but there are also some facts to be faced and a good place to start is in team structure. In the "engine room" we have four players who are all experienced, are all good ball players, and -----are all coming on in the "age bracket". Three of them have played at a very high standard in their native countries and Matt McKay is a current Socceroo. There is also 2 locals,Petratos and Lustica, who have been used, with contrasting results They simply don't function as a unit for they are all too "similar" in style. The backline???? We have 2 young local lads and 2 veterans, one of whom is retiring at season'e end. There is some experience in reserve, albeit hampered by injury, and another local, absent with the Olyroos at the moment. Up front in this game we had two players who have been with the club for some years and have been tried in various positions but over those years have been mainly used as subs. So you see Lionheart, all is not lost, what is needed is a 'blending" of all this talent into a machine that fires on all cylinders not stutter along from game to game, and that is where the head mechanic has to show his skills and get them working. jb

If ever there was a game that made a mockery out of the way that modern statistics are measured this was it.. They show Roar with a "possession" figure of 61% and yet they lost 0-4,and if this doesn't prove that possession football is not what it is cracked up to be then nothing will. Until possession is married to penetration then the number of "successful " passes made is totally useless.!!!!!!!!!!!! Roar were simply outclassed all around the field and if the management team didn't take note then the loyal fans are in for a big shock. For some weeks now these columns have seen various discussions on how this Roar team could be improved all the while under the proviso, "they are still top of the league" ,but that no longer can be used as a "defence mechanism". So whereto from here.? They will win games against other HAL teams for sure but that alone will not mean a thing to the observant fan,for they will know that the present 11 just doesn't compete when faced with the "big boys "of the league and in that factor are the seeds of what is needed if change is to occur. We will have to wait and see. jb.

Nothing personal, just business. Opens up a good opportunity for the Wanderers to go clear at the top. Its up to our boys to do it now.

Brisbane's aging team found out... I am not alone among Roar fans in seeing this one coming. The Roar have been flattered by their table position. It wasn't merited. Victory are still, in my view, the best team in the League. Brisbane? 5 outfield starters between 33 and 36... we're actually way off the pace and the table correction just began.

It was a very good performance by Victory, for sure. They punished Roar's mistakes, and there were quite a few of them. Let's hope the fools who've been writing Victory off this past month or two 'fess up, and admit they're no experts. Doubtless though, they'll claim this was always expected. And let's also hope the experts writing Roar off right now, like the R&B fan above, keep talking loudly so they can be readily identified in weeks to come.

Nothing new to what many roar fans have been saying for years regarding posession RBB...just imagine how much we would have won if we did have the final third worked out. Not that that was the issue tonight. I said a fortnight ago that i felt the next 4 weeks would be interesting for us and that 4 weeks isn't up so I want to see the next two matches. There's a saying that one swallow does not a summer make, so I wouldn't get too enthusiastic about what this result means. You of all people should appreciate that after the start the wanderers had to their season. But I get ppl love to see roar lose so they have their chance to stick the boot in.

Bit of post-match bravado. ;-) I've been waiting 14 matches for this type of performance.

A bit tough Fuss. Pretenders? Don't think Roar is pretending anything. MV had a good win, well done. Roar played badly, and helped out MV a lot with two maybe three of the goals. No excuses, badly played by us. Worst we've played this year, but at no stage have we pretended to be anything than what we are. League leaders on a shoe string, maybe not for long. We've got to improve, we know that, no presence here. Enjoy your win, after such a losing streak it was coming. Well done. We've not laid down, I'm sure, and we certainly won't be pretending anything, as you seem to be.

I was also expecting more from Brisbane. It was like they were dear in the headlights, frozen. Quite amusing how they dominate with possession stats but they simply don't do anything with the ball. There is no forward drive or purpose to their play, its having possession for the sake of it. There is no point in keeping the ball if you're going to do nothing with it and that is Brisbane Roar in a nutshell. They can forget about players missing or any other excuse they can come up with. The Roar could have put their strongest side out tonight and it still wouldn't have made a shred of difference. Very happy that MV got this result. Hopefully we can get a win or at least a draw and we are back on top of the A-league ladder where we deserve to be. Brisbane Roar...................pretenders indeed.

First time MVFC played 90' for the season & we've totally demolished the 1st set of title pretenders. Expected more from Brisbane. CCM impressed me more last week than Brisbae today. And, MVFC had 1/2 the reserve team playing.

Match was officially sold out 1/2hr before kick-off. Announcements outside the ground telling people "no more tickets available for sale". Couple of Tennis superstars - current & past - also enjoying the match.

When i was in under 7s i was taught to never play across goal under pressure. Brisbane players did that twice and it resulted in the first two goals.

80 min still 4-0 Barbarouses caught offside, it was good work by BR's defensive line, but there was one straggler who was slow to move up, and if he had been any slower, then Barbarouses was through because he was at the opposite side of the pitch to the straggler

Well the wayward balls are mostly due to MV pressure and Brisbane can't handle the heat.
