Australia vs India highlights: Third ODI - cricket final scores, blog

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

Match result:

Australia defeated India and clinched an unbeatable 3-0 series lead on Sunday night thanks to an excellent performance with the bat from Glenn Maxwell (96 off 83).

The match was thoroughly enjoyable, much better than the first two ODIs. A lot of it was to do with the pitch which wasn’t as flat as the first two.

For India it was the same old thing – strange captaincy calls, fielding could have been better and the bowlers gave away more loose balls than they should have for the Aussies to take advantage of. Another sobering defeat for India despite the few positives.

Final score
India 6/295
Australia 7/296

India are in strife after going down 2-0 and that’s bit of an understatement.

Twice in two games they have almost scored 310 and on both occasions, they have gone down in a jiffy. Australia’s chase in both those games has been clinical and that has left the visitors with a lot of questions to be answered.

India’s problems start at the top of the order with one of the openers, Shikhar Dhawan out of form.

Down the middle, there’s an issue with the finishing, one that’s cost India at least 20-30 runs in both games. With MS Dhoni struggling to get going and Suresh Raina absent from the squad, the reliance on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to bat through the innings has been greater than usual.

The result? They have had to push back their plans of putting their foot on the pedal.

And last, but definitely not the least, India’s bowling has looked innocuous. Ishant Sharma came in for Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the second ODI but that didn’t turn India’s fortunes around too much as the Aussie top four got going easily after Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh had gotten off to a slow start.

Dhoni’s problems are compounded by the fact he relies on two spinners on surfaces where slow bowlers get little help, and his aversion to playing a fourth seamer in place of one of the tweakers has now reached baffling proportions.

Australia are playing with a second-string bowling line-up as well and on flat surfaces, India have been able to get away with their scores.

The good news however for the Aussies is the batting form.

Marsh slotted into the opening position in David Warner’s absence with ease and Finch found some form too at the Gabba.

Steve Smith is never far away from runs these days, especially against India while George Bailey is showing traces of the form he had during the India tour of 2013-14, making him a potent threat against spinners.

With Mitchell Marsh rested from the second ODI, John Hastings took over the role well. He should play in the third ODI too with only question-marks over Kane Richardson’s place.

Richardson went for a few runs in the previous game, his first after a couple of years but the management might look to back him for at least one more game before making a decision on what needs to be done.

The absence of a frontline spinner means Glenn Maxwell will lead the spin attack again.

He did really, really well - and as someone who has been pumping up his tires on theRoar for a while now I'm very pleased to see how he went about it. I still struggle with the hatred some commentators and commenters seem to hold towards him. He's a young cricketer who has been developing his game over the last couple of years and is almost cherry ripe to go in tests as well - but team balance will dictate that.

Exceptional performance with the bat from Maxwell, yet Hastings' performance with the bat shouldn't go unrecognised. He has been brilliant for the best part of 24 months now and should be right in the midst for a T20 squad spot.

Don't know how could dhoni leave ashwin out on this pitch!paradoxically he showed he's still one of finest cricket brains around with a brilliant stumping and runout.might well be a shastri decision. B-)

Considering the rubbish produced by indian seamers in the first 15-20 overs, aus should've won in a canter with no ashwin around.kind a funny to see shaun marsh getting so many easy runs in the last two games and i haven't seen him score from a single decent ball.far too many loose ones.

He is the second worst at stopping a bye if it is below his belly...or if it doesn't come straight to him. I'll betcha he's glad Matty Wade is keeping.

I can't think of the last time Maxi's smart were NOT there. (I just wish he didn't call 6 foot 6 Mitch Marsh for that 3rd run. He was going so well too.) Maxi is still being hung out to dry by a reputation that was never justified. Game time has allowed him to maximize his ability.

Lacking in intensity? He had the highest strike rate of the game and was run out by Maxi calling for an overly ambitious 3rd. I guess when you've got it in for someone, reality doesn't count.

Yes and yes. The article should be very interesting, if there is one. For me, Maxi is probably the most frustrating cricketer. The ability is all there, but sometimes the smarts aren't. Tonight he was fantastic. Totally agree also about Kohli. He was also pushing them harder than their captain was.

This was thoroughly enjoyable, much much better than the first two ODIs. And I suspect a lot of it was to do with the pitch which wasn't as flat as the first two. Nothing different at the end from me; the same old thing, strange captaincy calls, fielding could have been better and the bowlers gave away more loose balls than they should have for the Aussies to take advantage of. Another sobering defeat for India despite the few positives. That's that from me tonight. With the series sealed, will we see India play slightly more freely than they have so far? Or will Australia easily cruise towards another whitewash. Back in a few days with the fourth ODI from Canberra. You can also join me on Twitter here. Good night.

Steven Smith says he's happy to restrict the Indians to 295. Also credits India for bowling well in the middle of the innings. Maxwell and Faulkner get a lot of credit from him.

I look forward to David Lord's article tomorrow. Topics should include Maxi and humble pie. Gotta say one thing, Kohli is a gun in the field. So often you sit through some fielding performances by sub continent and Windies teams and wonder if a single player is up to our fielding standard, but he's not just up to it, he's very classy.

Glenn Maxwell is the most obvious choice for the man-of-the-match. And he's the one! Maxwell says he's looking to shrug off the Big Show tag. Not for the first time, he's said that.

MS Dhoni says the score was a good one but the fielding was to blame. Says Sran didn't have a great day which was a problem.

India had their chances in this game. They got Australia six down. Just 215 on the board. And then they let go of the pressure. Bowled a lot of overs from Sran who hadn't had a great day. Dhoni wanted to get the overs off his most inexperienced bowler, but at that stage, he could have done a lot better by getting his strike bowlers in. Jadeja was one of those strike bowlers. He had four overs remaining. Dhoni saved him for the final 10 with an extra fielder outside the circle and that ended their chances as Maxwell and Faulkner took advantage of the bowling.

Magnanimous in letting Faulkner continue his tradition of hitting series winning runs!

And that's that, pushed to the covers for a single to take Australia home! Australia have won by three wickets with seven balls to spare.

Gone! Maxwell's out... ...that's the end of Maxwell, who was going with the flow and attempting to get to his 100. Length ball and he backed away, trying to smash it over the extra-cover. Edged, not middled. End of an excellent innings, a match-winning one. 1 needed off 8.

And now a four, slashed over point, takes Maxwell to 96. Just one to get. Four for the 100.
