Sydney FC's Alex Gersbach set for Europe move

By News / Wire

Boom Sydney FC defender Alex Gersbach is set to depart the A-League club for Europe after reaching a deal with what is believed to be a Norwegian side.

The 18-year-old defender, who has been one of the Sky Blues’ most reliable players since making his debut in 2014, had earlier indicated his desire to move to Europe.

He will fly there on Monday and if he passes his medical, his new club will announce the deal.

The move is expected to net Sydney FC a tidy profit and could include a sell-on clause if he moves from his new club to an even bigger one.

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold, who has always been a big fan of Gersbach, admits the loss of the talented left-back will hurt the club.

“Alex is a very ambitious young man and I would like to thank him for his service to Sydney FC,” Arnold said.

“It is always pleasing to be able to bring through a young player, develop him and see him get a chance in Europe.

“We would have loved to have kept him for another year, but it’s a great opportunity for him and I wish him the very best for the future.”

Gersbach has thanked the club for developing his skills.

“The chances I’ve been given at Sydney FC have undoubtedly helped me improve as a player and presented me with this wonderful opportunity which lies ahead. I am very grateful for that,” he said.

RF, it's not the fact he follows other football codes that makes him 'persona non grata'. Kaks is a AFL supporter as well, so too is AZ & I value their views. I also have no issues with anyone with criticism on football (A-League), as long as their agenda is for the betterment of the game. FFA & the game (FIFA, diving etc) are far from perfect. He likes to remind us where football is on the sporting food chain, now what he says maybe correct, but does he need to remind us everytime something good happens or when football gets great crowds in football.

I put my hand up as someone who thought Kruse was incapable of making the grade, certainly not good enough to become a regular in a top 5 Euro league. One of the very few times I can recall where I have got it wrong, and I am happy to admit as much.

Actually, Mr Bossi did not say to shut down the league. Allow me to quote the pertinent part again: "However, the fact our best prospects are itching to leave the A-League for competitions like the Tippeligean and Austrian Bundesliga should prompt the FFA to review the format and functions of the club football. ” [sic] The point is well made, despite Mr Bossi's atrocious Norwegian.

Yes. It's a shame, but you can't hide from (Egg Ballers version of) the truth. Aleague is rooned, I tell ya... rooned & a joke, an embarrassment. No promotion & relegation. Socialism is undermining the quality of workers & impacting Australia's standing across Fifa Playstation warriors.

Dom Bossi & you are right. Aleague is a mess & the FFA should fold the competition immediately.

He's also an A League fan, Punter. By insecurities, I meant a general defensiveness which manifests itself in overreaction to anything that might - and I stress might - be perceived as critical. There's too much football fundamentalism on the football threads for my liking. MF is entitled to his views and he is entitled to post on these threads as someone who takes an obviously keen interest in the A League. To declare him persona non grata because he watches other sports as well is ridiculous.

RF, the old saying one man’s junk is another man’s treasure. I’m the one with insecurities, I’m a football fan in the football tab talking football. MF is an fan of the 'local' game in the football tab talking ratings & attendances.

Evan -As you are no doubt aware there have been certain national teams that have come out of political manueverings behind the scenes. The Magyars were one ,a team basically dependent on the club Honved for most of it's players and Honved was in fact an "army team" totally financed by the communist regime in that country at that time.Even the manager was a high up official in the governing body. However there is some evidence that the idea had some merit. They were undefeated for 4 years. Come 1966 and we had another team from behind the curtain North Korea who set the World Cup alight with their perfrmance and then disappeared.Frank Arok's philosophy was thought to have centred on these teams for, as you know, for a longtime in his tenure he used only local players, being able to have "get-toghters" much more often than AP enjoys today. MF is right in his reply to you, what he forgot to mention that in 1957 there was a revolution in that country that stopped what one could term "natural living" for quite some time. It was in fact the revolution that saw many of the great Hungarian team "fly the coop", Puskas and Kocsis to Spain for instance and Hungarian football no doubt went into decline at that time.. Cheers jb

I think he'll be aiming to get a spot alongside Hernandez. Keissling is 32 so might be on the outer. There's a Swiss guy on the right wing there who he might be able to challenge for a spot.

The response has been little short of astonishing, MF. The old adage play the ball not the man comes to mind. The insecurities that bedevil football in this country have been on full display. And in saying this, no one can accuse me of not being a football man, which is clearly the default position in regard to yourself from the more critical posters.

Dominic Bossi of the SMH writes: "The A-League is unfancied for player development. Alex Gersbach has packed his bags for Norway and James Jeggo has touched down in Austria. Both promising youngsters were always destined for Europe sooner rather than later but to leave Australia for the 22nd and 16th best leagues in UEFA doesn't reflect well on player development offered here. More games, a better shopping window and opportunities for Europa League football make such moves slight step-ups. However, the fact our best prospects are itching to leave the A-League for competitions like the Tippeligean and Austrian Bundesliga should prompt the FFA to review the format and functions of the club football. " I would just like to take this opportunity to correct Mr Bossi' s Norwegian. His article contains two errors: 1. The name of the league is: Tippeligaen. 2. When referring to it, you do not need to add the definite artilcle because the name itself already contains it, with the noun commonly taking the definite artilcle at the end of the word (in both Norwegian and Swedish).

Unfortunately some people MF misconstrue facts & knowledge as intelligence & humility. I give you one Alan Jones for example, very knowledgeable, huge amount of facts, we all know how he can twist facts to suit his argument. However, there is very little intelligence (in my eyes) or humility in one Alan Jones. If one only sees the world one way with his eyes shut to the other wonders of the world, no matter how knowledgeable or factual of his one world, shows a complete lack of empathy or intelligence towards others. Sharing knowledge is a gift not a status, you have it all wrong. Hopefully one you will understand. You may have a bit of Alan Jones about you.
